May Medicine Cat Meeting 2021

It was strange being the first one to arrive. He was at least expecting to see Beechface there first since she had the furthest to go, but it seemed he beat her this time. The tom settled just outside of Mothermouth his tail curled neatly around his paws. He wouldn't have a mentor to report back to this time.. Not that he had one last time due to the bad situation.. This time he was all on his own. What did Starclan have in store for him since he was now the sole medicine cat of Thunderclan?

Beechface's paws were heavy as she scrambled up the last few foxlengths to mothermouth. She had caught Dovefrost's trail earlier, though it was still somewhat surprising to not be the first one to arrive for once. Not an unpleasant one, she realized.

"Hello, Dovefrost. I hope things are well in Thunderclan?" She was almost glad of the chance to sit, and it seemed as if the other medicine cats hadn't arrived yet, though there was still time for that to change.

Taking the final step of the climb, Smallbean arrived to mothermouth, his chest heaving. He had left camp later than he had expected, so he pushed himself to get there on time at the expense of his strength. He was both surprised and pleased to see that he wasn't the last to arrive, noticing only Beechface and Dovefrost waiting. He stood still for a moment longer to finish catching his breath before walking toward the two. He muttered a soft, "Hello."To them before picking a spot nearby to sit, observing the conversation.

Rookfire padded into Highstones, his head up high. He didn't know what to expect today, but he could see many of his medicine cat buddies near the Moonstone. Well, maybe not all of them were his buddies. He only really interacted with Dovefrost often, but he didn't mind Beechface and Smallbean either. Giving a nod to Smallbean, he padded over to the other two cats. "Hey, Beechface, Dovefrost! SkyClan and ThunderClan doing alright?" The ShadowClan medicine cat gave the two cats a smug grin as he stopped at the entrance of Mothermouth.

Dovefrost nodded a greeting to Beechface then to Smallbean waiting to speak for the moment. He was sure that they had heard the news, but he felt it was best to share when the rest of the medicine cats were here. Or some. "Thunderclan is doing alright." He told the two that had asked, glad Rookfire was here. He missed speaking to the tom at the gathering. "I'm sure you have heard by now of Daisybloom's passing. She passed last half moon while we were all here. Mossbloom tried to do what she could but it wasn't enough. I have taken up the role as full medicine cat of Thunderclan."

He knew that Smallbean already knew this, hearing it from Dovefrost himself at the gathering. "I wanted to share this with all of you myself." He didn't meant to bring down the mood of the meeting, but he felt it was important to share. He knew that Spiderthorn or Dennies wasn't here yet but he knew the tom had enough on his paws already.

"Skyclan is Skyclan. I'm counting the days until I find an apprentice to share this madness with." Beechface responded, whiskers twitching.

"I'm sorry. I knew how hard Daisybloom worked, You and Mossbloom must be devastated." Beechface's ears twitched back at the news of Daisybloom's death. "If you ever need anything, I'm here... I know what it's like to lose a mentor." She added.

After a few more moments of waiting, Beechface turned towards mothermouth. If Spiderquill was going to show up, he was late, and she didn't feel like standing around waiting when there were things to do back at camp. With a flick of her tail, Beechface vanished into the tunnel, paws taking her down the familiar winding path that led to the moonstone where she laid down at the far end, eyes closing.

Beechface blinked awake to see an unfamiliar starry cat in front of her. "Even the birds that soar through the skies can be pierced by thorns." The cat stated, simple and without fanfare. Beechface tried to speak, but the starry figure was already fading from view, leaving her alone in the starlit forest. Beechface let out a low huff, pondering the ever-cryptic message. Pierced by thorns... An injury of some sort? Birds that soared through the skies... But how would they be pierced by thorns from such a height? Of course, the message couldn't be taken literally, though things would have been simpler if Starclan could just tell her what she needed to know. But that was not Starclan's way.

Someone had been injured, or would be injured, by these thorns, whatever that meant. If the message was referring to a cat, there was no living cat in Skyclan that was a thorn- or -thorn... So this supposed threat didn't seem like it was from within, at least not this time.

Beechface shook her head in exasperation. She needed to think on this one.

Smallbean returned Rookfire's nod, giving him a small smile as he joined the group. He listened as they greeted each other, the conversation soon turning a bit sad when Dovefrost brought up Daisybloom's death. He averted his eyes and began to shuffle his paws, ears perking up in slight surprise at Beechface's response. It was weird to him seeing Beechface be so empathetic. He had gotten a bad impression of her from how she acted toward Softbreeze, but maybe she wasn't all that bad. Making a mental note to try talking to her more, he shrugged his shoulders and followed her into mothermouth, navigating the darkness as if he could clearly see. When the moonstone came into view he quickened his pace. Choosing a spot on the opposite side of the stone from Beechface he laid down, fluffy tail wrapping around his paws. Closing his eyes, he touched his nose to the stone.

When his eyes fluttered open, he stood on a forest's edge, vast and dark. He stepped forward and gazed into it's depths, his eyes struggling against the shadows to see if anything was out of the ordinary. Not that he would recognize if something had changed in this unfamiliar place, he was just looking for something that would tell him why he was there. Suddenly, the bushes rattled nearby him, an unfamiliar cat emerging from the underbrush, the stars of silverpelt glowing in their pelt. A pair of icy blue eyes found his, cold and unrelenting. Jaws separating to call out, he was quickly stopped when the other cat beat him to it. "Vast claws have snuffed out light; a thorn can be found in your own pad." Their voice echoed between the trees, clear and steady, but to Smallbean their words were as clear as mud. He instinctively raised his paw, turning it over to check for a wound. Of course, he found a clean, undamaged paw. What did they mean by that, though? "What do you-" He began to state his thoughts, walking toward the cat, but before he could reach them his vision began to darken at the edges, taking over the rest of his sight within heartbeats.

And then he was awake. His cold nose was still pressed up against the moonstone, his body remaining in the same crouching position. He had already begun to forget where he had just been before, but the memory of the cat and their words remained, making a seemingly permanent imprint in his mind. As he sat up and retracted his paws toward his body, he could think of nothing besides the cat, trying to come up with some sort of explanation for what he was told. "What did they mean, 'found in your own pad?'" He thought, squinting his eyes. He turned the words over in his head as he stared at the surface of the moonstone, deciphering the words the best he could.

Dovefrost nodded. A small "Thank you." leaving his maw afterwards from Beechface's words. He was certainly thankful to have someone experienced like her around. He certainly would turn to her for help if he needed it. He wasn't going to push it any further, they needed to get this meeting done. As the others started to file into Mothermouth, he did too. Hopefully Rookfire would follow, and Spiderthorn wouldn't be too far behind. The white tom took up a spot next to the Skyclan medicine cat, leaving some distance between the two. He pressed his nose to the stone, not minding the small cold shock it sent his body.

When Dovefrost brought up Daisybloom, Rookfire nodded solemnly. He also knew what it was like to lose a mentor, and despite his mentor being very different from Beechface's and Dovefrost's, it still stung. "It stings when you lose a mentor, especially when it feels like you could have done something," the ShadowClan medicine cat said. "If you need anything, we're here for you." Honestly, if it wasn't for Beechface's response, he didn't know if he would have said "we" to Dovefrost, but it was clear that the SkyClan medicine cat wanted to support him as much as he did.

Once Beechface and Dovefrost left for Mothermouth, Rookfire followed. The black tuxedo padded through the winding paths of Mothermouth just as he had done before. There wasn't much to desctibe, but there were multiple shades of gray covering the entire cavern, as it normally did. When he saw the glow of the Moonstone, he hastened his pace to reach the Moonstone. Padding towards the glowing rock, he pondered about if the prophecies that he got would be more helpful or more vague. For some reason, the tom was thinking that it would be more of the latter.

Touching his nose to the Moonstone, he fell asleep on the moonlit rock.

Flashing before Rookfire's eyes is unyielding lightning. There is no raging storm, only wild flashes. The thin tall tree ahead is struck with a swift explosion... leaving behind scorched marks at the base of the tree.

Jolting back awake, the black tuxedo turned around. Lightning... Trees? Scorch marks on the tree? Flashes of light... could that be referring to Flashlight? Or does the lightning refer to a clan - ThunderClan to be exact? Scorch marks... does that reference a spark? But neither Foxspark nor Sparkfire... did they kill someone? I can't accuse one of them of murder from this vague vision. I could be completely wrong on this interpretation for all I know.

Wait, scorch marks on a tree can't really reference a spark at all. Are there any cats with Scorch- in their name? Not in ShadowClan, I know that. And what kind of tree is thin and tall... well, there are many trees that look like that. What kind of leaves did it have... I don't remember. I don't remember. How can I not remember what kind of leaves the tree had? This is really frustrating by the stars.

Dennis could've kicked himself. The one time he actually slept well was the night of the medicine cat meeting? Really? He muttered curses under his breath as he choked down a pawful of herbs, rushed out of the medicine den, got a warrior to escort him and left camp. He looked quite funny, hobbling at full speed. He wasn't even trying to be late this time. The dust had settled for the most part with Beechface, and anger had given into a silent contempt that he could deal with. Softbreeze wouldn't be there, of course, but the others were pleasant enough and it was nice to catch up. Or it would've been, if Spid- Dennis' internal clock was normal in any way, shape or form.

Chest heaving, he climbed up to Mothermouth. Everyone was already inside, though really at nearly half an hour late what did he expect? He rushed into the tunnel after hastily thanking his warrior chaperone, crashing facefirst into the Moonstone for not the first and definitely not the last time.
