The Winds Bring Freedom Tonight {closed}

Downtuft stood proudly and stretched out as he woke up, sunlight streaming down onto his fur. Already WindClan was recovering, but he knew it would be a long time until the bloodstains of the Asylum were fully gone, and with a side glance at the medicine den, some of those wounds would never heal.

Turning his head to the sky, pride and determination blazed his jade eyes, and they narrowed as a toothy grin crossed his maw. "Snowbriar, Flashstrike, Flurryfox! Hunting?" He asked, energy surging in his paws. After moons of being watched over, it felt so good to finally be able to do as he wanted, when he wanted.

This was what freedom felt like.

And Downtuft would never take it for granted again.

Stretched out on a rock, Flurryfox tried to block out the sounds of the camp. After Asylum had been dispelled, the little tom hadn't known what to do with himself. The security of supervision while outside had faded. The constant anxiety of dangers had grown, as much as he hated it. Why couldn't he just toughen up like his clanmates? He knew every cloud didn't hide a hungry eagle and every crack didn't shelter an opportunistic snake. The irrational fear that grasped the new warrior never left and even wormed its way into his dreams. He hadn't gotten a full night of sleep since Asylum fled and spent most of his free time trying to nap. Downtuft's call reached out to the tom, and he opened his eyes and lifted his head. Flurryfox could see the energy on the older tom's face, and the idea of having three other cats nearby didn't sound too bad. "Sure," he called. The small tabby stood up and shook out his fur. He needed to pull his weight anyways. He trotted over to Downtuft, eyes searching for Snowbriar and Flashstrike.

Sleep hadn’t come this easily since Flashstrike had been a kit. Without Asylum lurking in the shadows, eyes boring into his fur at every possible second of the day, constantly reminding him that his presence in WindClan’s camp-- his home-- could be snuffed out in an instant for some slight to those invaders, the tom could finally relax.
Drowsily, Flashstrike rolled over when he heard Downtuft call his name. He looked up to see his clanmate’s toothy grin and a smile broke out onto his own muzzle as he got to his paws. Any chance to get his paws out on the moors was a welcome one. “Of course!”

It was a fine day. The sun was rising over the tips of the hills, and the moors sung with freedom. Snowbriar was curled into a small ball at the edge of camp. Not asleep, but resting. Her ear flicked up as she heard her name being called. When she recognized it as Downtuft, she smiled a little. She hadn't had an opportunity to hunt freely yet in her life. Already, life at camp felt different, and she wondered how hunting with just Clanmates would compare. She nodded to the three toms and gazed out of the camp's entrance with a new sort of excitement. "I'm ready."

As all three answered, Downtuft nodded, and with renewed energy, took the first unsupervised step out of camp since the night he lead a patrol to RiverClan to find Brick. Flashstrike seemed most eager, and with a painful throb he remembered that this tom was once Goldengale's apprentice.

He wished his older sister was here now, to see the sunrise of freedom rise overtop the moors.

A scent of hare filled his nose and he shook his mind free if thoughts of Goldengale. The rabbit was less than a foxlength away, happily bouncing away from a freshly disturbed patch of heather. Downtuft took off after it like a rocket, paws barely grazing the ground as he leaped for it, landing square on top of it and killing it.

Downtuft attempted to catch a hare! It COSTED FIVE SP and was SUCCESSFUL!

As the other patrol members approached, Flurryfox dipped his head. He followed Downtuft out of camp, forcing his eyes down. His tail stayed low and close to his body and each pawstep made little sound almost like he was trying to make himself even smaller than he already was. If a flying predator caught sight of the patrol and chose to target the small tom, he would have to fight back. Flurryfox couldn't let his stupidity and cowardice cause his clanmates any harm as he did to Foxspirit. He asked for the suffix 'fox' to make her proud and to prove that he could defend his clan, which he felt he had yet to do. Then, Downtuft's sudden movement made him jump. The fur rose along his spine before he saw the hare about to fall prey to the older warrior. Flurryfox wasn't the only one startled by the sudden attack; a vole burst out from the same clump of fragrant heather straight to the small tabby, to which Flurryfox instintively slammed his paw down at the prey. But, before his paw hit the ground, the vole slipped under him and disappeared into a small burrow. "Fox-dung! He hissed with a lash of his tail. It had ran right beneath him, and even a new apprentice could have caught it with ease. Flurryfox's ears pinned to his head as he stared at the hole, clenching his jaw and letting out a frustrated huff.

Flashstrike followed the patrol with his head and tail held high in the rolling gusts of wind that blew across the moors. The scent of hare came to his nose, but Downtuft was faster at spotting the prey, and just then Flurryfox startled behind him. Flashstrike spun around and saw the vole’s tail disappear into a burrow.
He stiffled a chuckle and turned away, pretending that he hadn’t noticed to save Flurryfox some embarrassment. Instead, he focused out on the moors before him when a gust of wind blew the scent of another rabbit towards him. Sharp gaze quickly found the prey scuffling through the tall grass. Flashstrike took off after it without a second thought.
