Dawnhawk had caught Beechpaw on her way out of camp, and offered to go herb gathering with her. Beechpaw was wary. She and her brother had never really gotten along all they well. They'd even come to blows at one point, though even now it seemed like a distant memory. Things had... improved since the fire, but mostly Beechpaw preferred to avoid him and his snide remarks.
Still, he asked, and she'd reluctantly agreed. At least if they ran into trouble, she was mostly certain that she could count on her brother to fight alongside her. She lead him through the forest toward the great ridge in relative silence, finally stopping once they reached the top of the ridge. Twolegplace was visible in the distance, and Beechpaw was happy to only ever view it from this distance. She had no desire to go back there again. Their forest might have been charred, but it was better than rogue-infested twolegplace. And, as dreary as the ash-covered landscape was, bits of greenery poked through, even now in late leaf-fall. The forest would recover.
"Okay so... You're looking for herbs, not prey. They stink, I know. If you find anything, let me know and I'll harvest them." She didn't trust Dawnhawk to pick flowers without keeping them intact. Beechpaw wouldn't have trusted most warriors to do so. A few moons ago and she wouldn't have trusted herself to do so without rendering the plants unusable.

Dawnhawk followed after his sister happily, though he noted that she was still wary. That was good! She at least had something between her ears after all. Still... she had brought him along with no one else. Not so smart. Perhaps their fight with the ugly rogue she-cat had bonded the two, or maybe she trusted him now. Dawnhawk, at least for now, had no reason to bury his claws into his sister like he had before, but he had no reservations of doing it again if he felt it was necessary either. He walked mostly in silence with her, scanning the horizon for threats, but so far found none.
"They stink? ... Okay... I'll try sniffing some out." He put his nose to work immediately and tried to find something planty and stinky. In an ashy world like this, the greenery was easy enough to spot. But... stinky? He didn't share his dad's hyper sensitive nose. He did stumble across something that smelled... different at least from the stuff he knew wasn't special. He stared at the tiny plant for a few moments before he decided he had no clue what it could be.
"This one is sort of.. pungent..." He called to his sister before poking it with a toe.

It didn't take Dawnhawk long to find something, and Beechpaw padded over at his call.
"Tansy, good for greencough." Beechpaw responded. It was an odd sensation, to now be so familiar with the herb that she could name it from a distance. The herb would come in useful once leafbare set in, of that much she was certain. Sagelight had told her it could help with normal coughs as well, and they'd used up a lot of it after the fire.
Carefully, the large she cat plucked several stems bearing the round yellow leaves from the plant, and set them aside. Turning, Beechpaw's jaws slightly parted as she searched for more herbs.
She wound up standing in front of a leafy plant with white flowers, and carefully nipped at the base of a few of the stems. Chervil, which had a multitude of uses. Beechpaw placed the chervil beside the tansy that Dawnhawk had found before turning once more. She hadn't been expecting the charred forest to yield something as productive as it was now.

Dawnhawk actually lowered his head low enough to watch what Beechpaw was doing. He didn't have plans to become a medicine cat... ever. But the process was still interesting enough. Once she had harvested two plants, he shook his head and put his eyes and nose back to work. The few green things that were poking up from the ashes at least made it easy to find them, but it was still the smells that he wasn't sure he could get right. His nose came across a plant that seemed to have a stronger smell than the rest of the green things? He wasn't one hundred percent sure, but he was willing to at least point it out to Beechpaw.
"Okay so... how about this one?" For once... he was actually enjoying his outing with his sister. If only being a medicine cat meant he would have to never have kits or that he he would have to answer to starclan and work for them. The plant part was actually quite interesting. "Do plants..?" He paused for a second as he tried to think of the words he wanted to use. "Do you have like... back up plants that do similar things if you don't have the best plant for said ailment?" He asked out of curiosity. He moved away from the little plant he found so that Beechpaw could get a better look at it.

Dawnhawk's question had taken Beechpaw by surprise, evident as her eyes briefly flicked to him. "Some do. There's a plethora of plants that can treat or prevent infection; garlic, horsetail, marigold... Some work better than others. Tansy, Catmint and chickweed can both treat greencough, but catmint is more effective." Of course the more effective plant would be tucked away mostly in twoleg gardens. Beechpaw had little desire to go exploring twolegplace, but she would have to do so if the need ever arose.
Beechpaw inspected the plant Dawnhawk had found. Sorrel, common, but useful. She had a feeling she'd be needing plenty of traveling herbs once their younger siblings were further along in their training soon enough. The sour-tasting leaves were carefully plucked and piled with the rest of the gathered herbs before Beechpaw turned in search of more.
A flash of bright flowers caught Beechpaw's eye, and she carefully picked the poppy seeds and set them with the slowly-growing stash of herbs, leaving her brother to search for others while she did the same. Oddly, his presence didn't seem to be quite as grating as it usually was. Maybe they'd both matured. Or maybe there just wasn't anything to argue about at present. Either way, Beechpaw was content to let the silence hang between them.

As she explained the uses of different plants, Dawnhawk genuinely listened. It was probably the most attentive look he'd ever given his sister. Once she had finished, he nodded and logged that info away for future use or reference. His nose went back to the plants in the surrounding area, now paying special attention to flower looking things that he didn't know anything about. The forest was recovering, so that was a good sign. His nose inhaled another extra planty plant scent and he strode toward it. He poked it with his toe, only a moment before he realized that maybe he shouldn't just touch random plants for the giggles.
"This one smells... smelly." He sat and waited for Beechpaw to come look again. He'd be willing to carry the herbs back to the camp as well if she needed him to. It didn't look like they had any predators or strange cats to worry about at the moment anyway. Dawnhawk absolutely would defend their only medicine cat from predators and especially defend her from cats that he didn't know. He'd done it before and he was willing to do it again. Besides... it was a good opportunity to show off how good of a fighter he was now.

Beechpaw allowed herself a small smile as the pair continued to search for herbs. Dawnhawk had found something, and trotting over, she noted it was another clump of chervil. It had been a productive search, and productive was good. The herbs were once more carefully set aside, and Beechpaw turned to continue her own search.
A bush caught her eye, and Beechpaw started toward it, only for her nose to wrinkle and lip curled in obvious disdain. The red berries surrounded by dark leaves were far from useful. They were the exact opposite of medicinal, and she remembered Sagelight's warnings about them clearly. The Riverclan medicine cats had actually kept a few of the berries, which Beechpaw couldn't fathom doing in her own herb stores. If she wanted to kill another cat, it would be done like a proper warrior with teeth and claw, not poison.
Whiskers twitching in disgust, Beechpaw made a note of where the bush was for future reference, and stepped away from it almost like it might bite her. It wouldn't, of course, but the deathberries didn't need to be harvested and she certainly wouldn't allow them near the rest of the herbs they'd found.

Dawnhawk had noticed that Beechpaw approached a plant, but quite literally turned her nose up at it. What was wrong with that one? He squinted at it to examine it from afar. Oh... the one plant that he actually knew what it was. Deathberries. He too, noted that in his head for future reference of where it was. He spotted a promising looking plant not too far away from where he and Beechpaw stood and cantered over to it. He dropped his nose again to sniff at it. It certainly smelled different... he really wished he knew more about plants now. The knowledge of these things couldn't possibly hurt, could it? Dawnhawk waved his tail once to catch Beechpaw's attention.
