"Getting back on our own territory can't come soon enough." Smokefeather muttered, "we're all having bad luck. And leafbare is approaching." The older warrior carefully circled the area, searching for signs of prey.

Another bird, and once more Smokefeather carefully made her way toward it. Muscles bunching, she leapt, paws pinning brown wings to the ground. Smokefeather quickly snapped the bird's neck, before trotting off to bury it with the rest of their catch.

Nodding at her mother's comment, Primroselight wondered what leaf-bare would be like. Would hunting be even harder than it was now? Hopefully the forest would've recovered in time for the coldest season. She didn't think that Riverclan would be that grateful to be sheltering another clan when prey was so short. Even though her optimism was fading due to all her failed attempts to hunt, when the young warrior scented a mouse she soon tracked it. Belly fur brushing the floor, she crept towards it in a hunter's crouch.

The mouse was now near enough for her to pounce. This time, her leap was greatly misjudged, leaving her a tail-length away from where she should've been aiming. Her mistake gave the small rodent enough time to escape away. She felt tears welling up in her eyes at her constant faliure, but quickly blinked to try and make them disappear. There was no point in crying over lost prey, right? But five attempts and five misses from a warrior? Maybe she just wasn't cut out to be a warrior. Sure, Mallowbrook, Wildflower and Ravenmist were successful warriors, but what if she just didn't have what it took?

Smokefeather briefly laid her tail across Primroselight's back.They had their fare of unsuccessful hunts before, but it was rare that her daughter seemed this discouraged over it. The only thing she could do was keep trying, unfortunately.

"Remember what I told you on our first hunt? Even seasoned warriors aren't always going to catch prey." She mewed before slipping away to track down an oddly familiar scent. Rabbit, Smokefeather quickly realized, and a light smile tugged at her face as an old memory surfaced. She'd been hunting with Wolfcall and Bloodstrike while she had been an apprentice. They'd met a rather friendly loner by the name of Summer, and Bloodstrike had caught a rabbit. He'd draped it around her neck to be funny. How distant that seemed now.

A quiet sigh escaped her as the memory fled, and Smokefeather carefully began to stalk the furry animal. Closer, she realized the creature was quite a bit larger than a normal rabbit. Hare?

She leapt forward-, claws pinning the creature. A mew of surprise escaping her as she realized she'd caught the creature.

Primroselight, trying to look on the bright side at her mother's words, scented the air yet again for prey. Her nose picked up traces of toad. This place is full of frogs and toads! She though, but bitterly added, It's not like it's any use to me if I can't catch them. She tried to scold herself for her mindset of failure, but she felt in her heart that it could possibly be true.

This one was closer than most of the others had been to her, so she barely had to track it to be near enough to pounce. She positioned herself in a well-practised hunting crouch, haunches at the ready to spring her into action. With a deep breath, hoping that maybe this time would be successful, she pounced. Yet again, her prey had other ideas then being eaten. It escaped her clutches and leaped to freedom, leaving a very disheartened warrior behind it. She was beginning to wonder whether the patrol could be any worse. Unluckily for her, it could.

The cause of the unusually skittish and difficult-to-catch prey was finally clear when an enraged goose appeared from behind a tree. It hadn't exactly been purposely scaring the prey, but it was very loud when expressing its discomfort in situations, therefore terrorising the smaller creatures with its constant honking. This time, however, it had found a different target, who happened to be Primroselight. Seething with rage, it lashed out with its beak at the nearby cat, catching her flank.

Blood dripped down her side, and her wound burned with pain. She reared up at the goose and slashed at its head and neck, only stopping when she began to wobble and loose her balance. Her pent-up anger and frustration was starting to escape out of her at the appearance of the winged predator.

For a moment, Smokefeather could only stare in bemusement at her catch. A hare. They were seldom seem on Skyclan territory, and were much quicker than rabbits, which were already fairly uncommon and difficult to catch. Maybe she'd share it with Bloodstrike later, or convince Redfall's kits to try some.

Turning to stash the prey, Smokefeather froze briefly at a loud honk. Geese, of course. Because this was Riverclan territory and starclan forbid she have one hunt without incident. Dropping the hare, the warrior bounded towards the source of the noise, leaping for the goose with a growl. Primrosepaw was already fighting it, and she was bleeding, but Smokefeather was no medicine cat to know how bad the damage was.

Smokefeather used Leap and Hold on Goose for -10sp, dealing 11 damage. Goose is pinned for 1 turn.

With her mother at her aid, Primroselight was starting to feel a little more confident. There was no doubt that the surprise and recent failures had shaken her a bit, but at least with Smokefeather by her side she wasn't in as much direct danger. The goose was pinned by her mother, who was using her claws to weaken its fight, so the younger warrior slipped under its belly. She raked it with her hind legs, ignoring the pain in her flank.

A small smile crossed her face, despite the situation. Her and Smokefeather had been attacked by a goose on their first training session by the creek, but those days were far away. She was a warrior now, even if she had hunted better on that outing moons ago. Before the forest was burned to a crisp.

Smokefeather raked her claws through soft feathers as the goose struggled beneath her grip while Primroselight raked at its' belly. Her daughter fought well, and a brief smile flitted across her face.

It wasn't long before the goose's thrashing caused her grip to falter, and Smokefeather's paws landed on the ground before a front paw snapped out, slashing at the goose's neck.

"I guess we've caught a goose, Prim." Smokefeather commented wryly, glancing at her daughter as the goose took its' last breath.

"Are you okay? Beechpaw should probably have a look at your side." She added, eyes narrowing with concern at the blood dripping from where the goose had caught Primroselight earlier.
