There was a heaviness to Flintstar as he jumped onto the Jaggedrock, a weariness that was as deep as his bones as he padded to the edge. The leader hadn't been the same since Mothglow had died - he was doing his best to keep up on his duties but there was a...Tiredness to the leader. His energy, as hard as it was to read before, had vanished in the death of his sister. He was just...So tired. But he couldn't let ShadowClan down - he had been warned of the many hardship that he would face. He had to keep ShadowClan strong, he had to be their leader. He just...Had to do his duties. "ShadowClan, gather in the shadow of the Jaggedrock," he called out, curling his tail around his paws as he sat there, a tired sigh escaping him as he waited for his Clanmates to gather.
At Flintstar's call, Brightpaw padded into the clearing amongst her gathering clanmates. Mothglow's death had been hard on the whole clan, even though she herself had never met the old medicine cat. The was she saw it was that ShadowClan was now much more vulnerable: they had no fully trained medicine cat, only an apprentice with no-one to train her. She sat down near Mistypaw and raised her eyes to the dark leader. The crowd grew, and with it the whispers of what the meeting would be about.
"I have...Called you all here to witness an apprentice join the rank of our warriors," the leader meowed, his voice even and emotionless. He was happy on some level, ShadowClan growing was always a good thing but it couldn't outweigh the heaviness in his heart. "Brightpaw, please step forward." He took in a deep breath as he waited for the young she-cat to step forward, relieved on some level that he simply had to go through the motions. Simple and easy, then he could retreat to his den for a while. "I, Flintstar, leader of ShadowClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Brightpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
Brightpaw wasn't expecting anything until she heard her name called. Brightpaw, please step forward. This was it, this was her warrior ceremony: so much had lead up to this. If only Emberspark could be here. She had long recovered from his death, but it still felt strange to be named as a warrior without her original mentor by her side. Whilst each thought was running through her head, she had stepped to the front of the crowd without realising. Now, the oath. She had practised in the nursery, from when she could barely walk or talk. Nothing would get in her way, unless... Icegaze's piercing blue eyes showed at the entrance of the elder's den. Instead of the pride that should have been shining in them, they were crowded with something else. Disappointment. She hadn't worked hard enough: been stuck as an apprentice for too long. He would never show such feelings to Frozenpaw, who was only minutes younger than her, yet still an inexperienced apprentice. No, it was always her who got all the criticism, and never any of the praise.
It took her longer than it should have to drag her eyes away from his and back to Flintstar, but she achieved it nonetheless. By now, he had finished the ceremonious words, even if it was clear they were far from joyful. Her part now, she thought she meant it, she truly believed she did, but it wouldn't take long for her to realise later in life that she may not be willing to die for a vast majority of her clanmates. But in the moment she knew that this was her first step to becoming the greatest warrior ShadowClan had ever seen. After a deep breath, she spoke the simple two words...
Flintstar huffed silently as the two words were spoken, relieved that he could get this ceremony done and over with. "Then by the powers granted to me, I give you your warrior name. Brightpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Brighteye," he meowed. Perhaps it wasn't the most creative name but Flintstar wasn't very creative in general and hadn't had the energy to actually put thought into it. "We honor your observance and quick-wit, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ShadowClan." As he finished the ceremony, he pushed himself to his paws and jumped down, slowly making his way over to Brighteye. Without a word, he rested his chin on her forehead before he pulled away. He gave her a nod and a flicker of his tail before he turned to let her celebrate with the rest of their Clan.
Brightpaw, no, she thought, Brighteye, stayed unmoving as her leader gently rested his head on hers, and turned back to the crowd. She had never particularly liked her name as a -kit or a -paw, but now it actually made sense. Neither 'bright' in pelt or personality, it hadn't fit her very well without the suffix. Her golden eye was the only thing even slightly bright about her. She was really a warrior now, and nothing was going to stop her on her own path to greatness.
Mistypaw had been sitting outside the apprentices' den, having just dropped a pair of mice onto the fresh-kill pile, when Flintstar's voice rang out. The tom's ears pricked in curiosity as he moved closer, finding himself next to Brightpaw as he sat down once more. Flintstar wasn't given to just calling clan meetings at random, so he figured it was a ceremony. Whose, was the question.
That question was answered quickly enough, and Mistypaw gave his friend an encouraging smile as she stepped forward to receive her warrior name.
When the ceremony was concluded, Mistypaw stepped forwards, "Congratulations, Brighteye!" He mewed, before stepping back and allowing the rest of their clanmates to congratulate her.
Thankful that the silence had been broken by Mistypaw, she turned to him. "Thanks Mistypaw, hopefully you'll join me soon." Once she had been congratulated by what it felt like everyone in the clan, she headed towards the camp entrance. She was a warrior now, so no-one should object to her leaving camp alone, as long as she brought back some prey.
