| Heronflight padded through StarClan, his silver fur mottled with tiny glowing stars. The grass, the camp, the river, the cats, they were all familiar. Wrenbreeze, Larkfeather, Spotfur, Jaystar, they were all here with him. As the gray tabby looked around, he saw all of the StarClan cats, RiverClan in life, RiverClan always, living here for the rest of their lives. The gray tabby knew that while he passed away, Torrentstar would stay. The gray tabby was confident in his abilities to lead RiverClan, setting a good example for everyone who came after him.
But something, something was still scaring the new StarClan warrior. Rumors of StarClan cats who were determined to kill off cats who were not pure of blood. Rumors of cats who were tired of the "impurities" and wanted to "cleanse" the clans. If they are more than just a stupid myth, the gray tabby decided, then we will stop them before it's too late. At least, that's what he thought.
He saw Wrenbreeze walk up to the river, looking down at the cats below. It didn't seem like the brown she-cat even saw Heronflight as she stared down at the clans below. That's odd, the gray tabby thought. That is not normal for her. The gray tabby tom decided to stay quiet, seeing what Wrenbreeze was doing at this point in time. "It's time," she mumbled. Time for what? the gray tabby thought, almost speaking those words out loud. "No longer can we stand the impurities of the clans. It's a disgrace to the warrior code. We need to stop these cats right now, before every drop of blood from every clan will be tainted from another." Heronflight stared in shock. Was Wrenbreeze actually saying what he thought she was saying? "It's time for the Righteous Few to purify the clans."
A part of Heronflight shattered within him. Not only was the rumor of StarClan cats trying to eradicate all "impure" clans was true, but Wrenbreeze was part of them. "Wrenbreeze!" the gray tabby shouted. Startled, the younger warrior looked up from her gaze. "Heronflight? Were you listening?" she asked. The gray tabby snarled at his mate. "Yes, I was listening! And I'm furious that you could even suggest that!" Heronflight took a deep breath, calming himself down from his rage. All rage had ever done to him was pull him down, make him not think straight. At the end of the day, Wrenbreeze was still his mate. Maybe the gray tabby could reason with her. "Wrenbreeze, why?" the gray tabby asked her calmly, but with a twinge of anger? Frustration? Guilt? He really didn't know. Wrenbreeze stared at Heronflight, her green eyes matching Heronflight's. "To set a new era," she said. "One without cats clan-hopping or forbidden romances. Of course we would let them into StarClan, but we need to move on."
"So after you kill numerous cats, many of which didn't do any code-breaking, you would be satisfied?" Heronflight growled. The gray tabby saw Wrenbreeze look down at her paws, obviously feeling guilty about what she was condoning. But the she-cat eventually looked Heronflight back in the eye. "The ends justify the means."
"The ends do not justify the means!" Heronflight shouted, kicking a pebble into the river. "It sounds like you are expecting forbidden relationships to just... end after you do this. That's not going to happen!" "It is going to happen," Wrenbreeze said calmly. "Because if they do get into a forbidden relationship, the punishment is death."
Heronflight stopped. She didn't just say that. She did not just say that. The gray tabby had always been a forgiving cat, willing to give almost anyone a second chance after they break the code. But murder? He could hardly forgive Sharptooth after she killed Rowanpaw all those years ago. The fact that Wrenbreeze was vouching for a mass murder, then would threaten murder on cats with nothing at all? He would not excuse that.
"Threatening murder," Heronflight growled, completely buckling under the emotional pressure. He had always had an opinion, and he always thought with emotion and anger. He had just hid it well since his apprenticehood. But now, his emotions were coming back. Hard. "THREATENING MURDER! WHO WOULD DO SUCH A THING? THERE IS NO WAY ANY LIVING CAT WOULD SIDE WITH YOU, WRENBREEZE! I ACTUALLY THOUGHT YOU WERE A MORAL CAT WHEN I MET YOU! BUT NOW I KNOW YOU WILL JUST THROW YOUR MORALITY AWAY TO SIDE WITH THESE CAT-MURDERING EXCUSES FOR STARCLAN CATS!" The gray tabby unsheathed his claws. "You're dead to me, Wrenbreeze," the gray tabby scoffed, walking away from the river.
Wrenbreeze sat down. Did she just burn a bridge with her lifelong mate? The brown she-cat stared at the river again, not to show her loyalty to the Righteous Few, but to question it. Did I made a mistake? ______________________________________ Rookfire, ShadowClan T4 Warrior: 60/170Kitespring, RiverClan T3 Warrior: 50/140Laurelriver, WindClan T3 Warrior: 50/140Hollypaw, SkyClan MCA: 20/50pfp of rook drawn by the amazing xaandiir! |
