Shreds of Sufferance {closed}

Cinderpaw had been particularly grumpy after her naming ceremony. Tulipfang of all cats had been named her mentor, and Flintstar, Cinderpaw's own father, had approved of this. What was he trying to play at? The she-cat had formed a grudge for the bicolor warrior ever since kithood, when she was shoved into a bush by her cheeky hind. Did Tulipfang know how painfully long it took to pull thorns out of Cinderpaw's thick pelt? Of course not, Tulipfang didn't have empathy for anyone, clearly. However being in proximity of such an unbearable cat was made semi-tolerable by the duties Cinderpaw was now given to fufill. The massive apprentice took great joy in hunting for her clan, having brought back two frogs yesterday. It was a simple task, but it was so... enjoyable to complete. Cinderpaw didn't need recognition, she only wished to play an honest part in the system that was ShadowClan. Hence why the apprentice couldn't bring herself to confront her father about her choice of mentor - it would only serve to throw a bramble into the hierarchy and life of her denmates.

So, here she was. Brooding grumpily by camp, eyeing Tulipfang as she waited for her mentor to take her out into the territory. Cinderpaw's large frame sat hunched over in the darkness, hazel eyes peering out of the gloom. "You're late." The apprentice rasped, annoyed. Even if she'd made a deal with herself not to complain about Tulipfang, it didn't mean Cinderpaw couldn't be petty.

Padding up to the newly named Cinderpaw, Tulipfang took a deep breath. The young she-cat was certainly one to watch out for, unless some-cat wanted to get your ear bitten off, but Tulipfang had no trouble dealing with the snarky apprentice. Of course, it was primarily her fault for causing such a rift in their... "relationship," and maybe if she hadn't pushed her into the bramble bush those few moons ago, they wouldn't have been assigned together. But, the past was the past and Flintstar, for obvious reasons, had named her to be Cinderpaw's mentor, and she had no choice but to meet her impertinent behavior with a smile, and maybe even some sass of her own to even the playing field, so to speak.

Listening as the apprentice spoke, the white and ginger warrior shook her head, her fluffy tail flicking every-which-way behind her. "Technically, there was no exact start time, so you were just early," Tulipfang pointed out, a smile on her maw as she held her chin up. "Since you're so eager to get going, let's get a move on," the molly added as she began to make her way out of camp and onto the marshy territory.

Cinderpaw frowned as she silently followed Tulipfang out of camp, wanting to swat at her white-tipped tail every time it bobbed in front of her nose. Her mentor was up beat, bubbly, and kind. Cinderpaw was the exact opposite. In fact, being in close proximity with such a cat made the apprentice feel even more dejected, her dark personality quite stark compared to this walking beam of sunshine. Perhaps Cinderpaw took it as a competition, and sunk her claws into the ground as they padded between some brambles. If winning at life was a game, was she losing? The she-cat supposed it depended on the qualifications. Cinderpaw could hunt and fight, and she was larger than all of her siblings, but cats tended to shy away from her. To be nice... It took effort. Something the massive smoke cat failed at on a daily basis.

She began to envy Tulipfang as they walked, and that envy only teased her anger. If life was nothing more than serving ones clan, then why was Tulipfang so popular and liked? Did no one notice all the prey Cinderpaw had caught? Did they not care about her early morning patrols just to make sure ThunderClan hadn't gotten cocky? The apprentice growled as she thought, lumbering over the earth, brow furrowed. "Why does my father like you?" She blurted, voice sharp as nettles.

Padding through the marshlands, Tulipfang's ears perked at Cinderpaw's sudden question. Pondering the question for a few moments, Tulipfang looked over to Cinderpaw. "If I'm going to be honest, I don't think your father really "likes" any-cat," she began frankly, shrugging her shoulders as she spoke. "But, I work hard and am loyal to the clan and StarClan, as any warrior should, so I'd assume that Flintstar respects that of me and the other warriors," she mewed with a puzzle look on her muzzle before proceeding. "Or, at least I hope he does," the white and ginger warrior added with a soft giggle.

Continuing onward for a little while longer, Tulipfang opened her maw to the scent of prey. "Let's hunt here," she mewed with a nod. Having caught the scent of a vole nearby, the molly crouched down and made her way away from her apprentice. Amber eyes locked onto the plump piece of prey, she crept forward, making sure to keep her hunting form in tact and before waiting too long, she pounced.

Landing squarely onto the vole, she killed it quickly before it was able to let out a squeal. Proud of her success, she made her way back over to her apprentice. Digging a quick hole and burying her kill, she gave her fluffy pelt a shake. "Now you try," she mewed with a somewhat cheeky grin.

Tulipfang attempted to catch a vole and was... successful. -3 SP
