two warriors and an apprentice walk into a hunting topic [closed]

Though group hunting patrols were not exactly Tanglerose's forte, she found it very difficult to say no to the offer. It was as if her brain was tripping over itself at the mere notion that her clanmates noticed her presence enough to send her on patrol... much less entrust her with an apprentice. In the few seconds it took her to actually process the question, her head had begun to nod "yes," and so she was crossing the ShadowClan territory with clanmates for what felt like the first time in a while. The low light of the mid-evening scattered moonlight on the two cats who walked alongside her. Redwolf had seniority, which Tanglerose supposed made her the patrol leader. It was fine by her, as long as the big red she-cat didn't get in her way.

"The Pine Grove might be nice," she said to the older she-cat. "All the prey from SkyClan's land might've scurried up that way. There'll be plenty."

Behind her trotted Cinderpaw, who was as new as an apprentice could get. Tanglerose stopped short as they approached the Pine Grove. Cinderpaw was pretty new. She might need some help... it was better than going back empty-pawed. "Hey, hold on!" she said, whipping around as her eyes narrowed curiously at Cinderpaw. "Can you hunt? Like, do you know what you're doing?"

When Cinderpaw had noticed a duo of warriors leaving for patrol, she'd carefully inserted herself into their general area, her proximity alone asking them to take her with. It wasn't easy to miss Cinderpaw's frame, the large she-cat rivaling small warriors in size. The usual lankiness of an apprentice was masked by her long pelt, and so she was perceived as a full-grown cat. It had made it rather difficult to fit in to the apprentice's den, both figuratively and literally. Fortunately she had her littermates, who could see right past her sharp words and thorny exterior. It was through them that Cinderpaw had begrudgingly learned how to make suggestions without even speaking. Body language they called it. But the only body language Cinderpaw knew was how to be large and intimidating.

She snorted to herself as the two warriors - Redwolf and Tanglerose, lead the way up into the Pine Grove. Somehow, through proximity alone, she'd managed to join a patrol that wasn't Tuipfang's. And that was a victory in and of itself. Maybe her siblings weren't completely frog brained after all. A smile almost befell Cinderpaw's maw at the thought, but was quickly hidden as Tanglerose whipped around and threw a question in the apprentice's direction.

Instantly offended, Cinderpaw fluffed up her pelt and narrowed her eyes, all shreds of joy now overcast by the nuisance before her. "Of course I can hunt! I had six moons to practice. What do you think I was doing with my kithood, playing with mossballs?" Cinderpaw frowned and shouldered her way between the two warriors, stomping her way into the thick pine cover before them. She'd show them.

Any chance to hunt with her kin was a chance that Redwolf would jump on, and she was genuinely happy that Cinderpaw had joined her and Tanglerose on their hunting patrol. Truth be told, she didn't know Tanglerose all the well, but she was happy to patrol with any of her Clanmates.

She was caught off-guard by Tanglerose's comments towards Cinderpaw, and before she could say anything, her niece had already disappeared out of camp. She gave a quick glance at the other warrior before following Cinderpaw out into the territory.

As Cinderpaw had already gone off her own way, Redwolf veered off a little ways away to begin tracking prey. It didn't take long for the scent of mouse to reach her, and she began stalking through the undergrowth towards the rodent. It had its back turned to her, and she pounced. As fast as she was, the mouse had known she was coming and darted away, escaping her claws and living to see another day.

She lashed her tail once and turned to look for more prey.

Redwolf attempted to catch a mouse. She was unsuccessful.

Tanglerose's face recoiled for a moment at Cinderpaw's biting response, a bemused lift coming to her lips. She forced a befuddled noise to come out of her mouth, somewhere between "uh?" and "well," but sounding like neither of them at all. Cinderpaw's broad shoulders shoved past her flank, making her bristle with annoyance at the negative energy that passed between them. Tanglerose could only grumble in response.

Redwolf caught her eye for a fleeting moment, and a sudden bout of wooziness bubbled up in Tanglerose's throat. Her gaze shifted away quickly as she grappled the dirt with her claws, indignant. "I was going to offer to help!" she whisper-shouted. "Don't know who poured pond-slime in her fur today. Gee."

If the kit wanted to figure it out herself, fine. She had to learn somehow. Tanglerose decided to set out on her own. She prowled into the unclaimed area, seeking out the familiar flickering of scales against grass. She spotted prey, not a lizard, but a sizable toad with a fat belly. She rounded on it from the side before springing up above it. As the bumpy flesh squished under her paws, she pushed her claws into its head until the wiggling of its pudgy legs ceased. It was bigger up close, and she smacked her lips at the thought of digging into it where she stood. She decided against it, given her company, and stashed it away.

The young warrior, feeling ever the least bit curious as to how Cinderpaw was managing, followed the scent of her clanmate and paused in the tall grass to observe the apprentice's hunting.

The forest was much more appealing and silent without Cinderpaw's clanmates. The trees didn't question her worth or her hunting skills. The trees didn't even have mouths to talk, they simply hung over the apprentice's head as she stomped deeper into the nettled marshes. A quiet mumble rattled from the she-cat's mouth as she lingered about, hazel eyes narrow and body tense. Her state of mind would improve greatly with prey in her maw.

It wasn't the proximity of her clanmates that made Cinderpaw angry, rather, it was the frog-brained questions that they asked. Serving ShadowClan was simple and easy. Challenge intruders, feed the kits and elders, and uphold the code. However the she-cat feared what was used to fill in the gaps between those accomplishments. Conversation. It was unnecessary and didn't hold any value towards the overall goal of the clan. The questions asked and things said... they only served to challenge the simplicity of life that Cinderpaw lived so blissfully in. She didn't want to have to prove herself to others, she only wanted to do.

To confirm her sentiments, a scrawny squirrel pattered under some brambles, catching the apprentice's eye. Cinderpaw immediately dropped into a crouch, tucking her tail in tight, attempting to minimize her large frame. It was no simple task, and the she-cat's massive size gave her away, startling the prey into a terror, giving it ample time to run away. "Foxdung!" Cinderpaw hissed to herself, kicking at a pile of dried nettles with an oversized paw.

Cinderpaw rolled for a Squirrel. Cinderpaw failed, costing 3 stamina.

A short hiss from the other direction told Redwolf that Cinderpaw had missed her catch, and she sympathized with the apprentice's attempt. She then continued on her way through the territory, keeping an eye and a nose out for prey, when the sound of another rodent snuffling through the leaf-litter alerted the red warrior to its whereabouts. She slowly stalked up to it, the creature's little pink nose sticking out from under the leaf for a moment before it buried it's head again, unaware of the cat slowly approaching it.

After a moment, she pounced. This time, the mouse was too preoccupied with finding food to notice her silent approach, and the leaf it had been hiding under shifted as the mouse did, revealing it to the extra-toed paws that immediately flattened it to the ground. It only had time to struggle for a moment before Redwolf's teeth met in its neck, and she covered her catch, turning to search for more.

Redwolf attempted to catch as mouse. She was successful.
