beneath the blazing sun

Zinnia stalked the moor with purpose, as concentrated on her task as she could ever manage to be - only occasionally did her eyes dart skyward, did her thoughts start to wander. She wasn't assigned to a hunting patrol today, but that didn't mean she couldn't hunt all the same - the fresh-kill pile always had need of prey, even at the height of the blazing sun. Greenleaf, as Clan cats typically referred to it, but while she had adjusted quite well to WindClan life she still found herself clinging to simple things. The names of the seasons, the stories she had grown up hearing. The scent of flowers that had drawn her here in the first place.

In the corner of her eye, she saw a flash of brown moving slowly - a quick glance revealed it to be a rabbit, sniffing at the ground. Swiftly, she fell into her best hunting crouch; slowly stalking in the rabbit's direction. Once she judged that she had drawn close enough and that the rabbit had yet to notice her, she pounced.

At the last possible second, it tried to dart away; but it was no match for a skilled hunter. She whispered her thanks to its lifeless form and buried it where she stood.

She carried on, slowly stalking the moor, when another flash of brown caught her eye - at first she thought it to be another rabbit, but a closer look revealed it to be a hare. Just as impressive a catch, if only slightly less appealing as a meal. Once more, she fell into position, one paw in front of the other as silently as she could manage...

And then, she pounced. A near-perfect catch, though the hare slipped her grip for a split second before she managed to grab it once more.

Carrying the hare to where she'd buried the rabbit and digging it up, she surveyed her catches for the day. They weren't the largest or most impressive rabbits or hares she'd ever seen - not even the most impressive she'd ever successfully caught - but they brought a smile to her face. They would add to the fresh-kill pile and feed her clanmates, and wasn't that impressive enough?

It was a struggle to be sure, to carry both of them back, but she would manage just fine. It just might take a little longer, and that was fine with her.
