A Hunt for Curatives (SOLO)

It was a beautiful newleaf day. Honeysong inhaled deeply, taking in the fresh scents of the forest. It hadn’t rained in a few days, so the herbs she would soon be gathering wouldn’t risk decaying in the store. At the same time, it wasn’t a hot day either, so the herbs wouldn’t be dried of their juices.

Constantly changing dressings and applying new poultices really did a number on their store, and so Honeysong offered to go out and gather some more, insisting that she would be just fine on her own. She had decided against asking anyone to come with her after weighing the pros and cons of asking a cat she had barely spoken to. The selling point had been the possibility of a lengthy awkward silence. Besides, it wasn’t anything she couldn’t handle on her own.

Arriving in an open clearing, many tall trees surrounding her with a ledge up ahead, Honeysong deemed the spot a good starting point for searching for herbs. She scented the air, ignoring the warm, delicious smells of nearby prey and focusing on the earthier aromas of plant life. She padded slowly around the clearing, giving each clump of leaves and flowers a careful sniff to see if they were anything she needed to bring back to the Clan.

She rather quickly found a clump of vibrant green vegetation with little burrs attached to the tall stems. With a trill of satisfaction, Honeysong began gently nipping away at the bases of the catchweed. Once she gathered about ten stems worth of burrs, she stopped, not wanting to collect all of it. Otherwise, the plant would find it difficult to grow more. She placed the stack of stems in the center of the clearing on a rock and resumed her search.

Wandering to the other side of the clearing opposite to the one she gathered the catchweed from, Honeysong resumed her search for more herbs. Among the many plants were tall green stalks with tiny yellow flowers blooming at the tops. Goldenrod! She had used next to the last stalk of the herb on Redfall’s shoulder yesterday, so she definitely needed to collect more. A few minutes of gentle nipping resulted in several goldenrod stalks being added to the ever-growing herb pile. Her solo herb expedition was coming along swell.

Next, Honeysong decided to venture a little further into the forest within the trees, making sure she could still keep an eye on where she had left her deposited herbs. She came across a particular hazel tree with many cob nuts littered along the base. Many of them had been cracked open by squirrels, but she could still see a few that must have recently fallen out of the tree. Purring happily, Honeysong retrieved a large beech leaf from the ground and began gathering the nuts onto it. After having gathered about a dozen nuts, she wrapped them up in the leaf and carried it over to the catchweed and goldenrod, gently depositing them in the pile.

Deciding she could only carry one more variety of herb, Honeysong set out deeper yet among the trees, searching for her final prize. She approached another group of trees with many acorns scattered around it, figuring them to be oak trees. Where there were oak trees, there were oak leaves that could prevent infections. Another herb she was running low on. However, there didn’t seem to be any freshly-fallen oak leaves on the ground, the ones that were littered around brown and withered. Looking up at the nearest tree, Honeysong sighed softly. There was only one other way to gather the oak leaves she needed.

Unsheathing her claws, she leaped up at the tree’s trunk and began to climb. She silently thanked Sunflower for having taught her how to climb trees before she had begun learning how to be a medicine cat under Sagelight’s guidance. Reaching one of the lowest branches, she carefully stalked on it towards the bunches of green leaves. Swiftly and carefully, the medicine cat plucked out a few leaves at a time before letting them go, watching as they fluttered to the ground. Once she was satisfied with how many she harvested, she slowly inched her way back down the tree until she was able to land safely on the ground.

Gathering up the leaves in her mouth, she trotted back up the hill towards the rest of her gathered herbs with her tail up high, feeling very pleased with herself. She hoped Sagelight would feel just as proud of her for having successfully completed a rather amazing herb hunt. Gathering as many herbs as she could in her mouth and tucking what she couldn’t under her chin, Honeysong carefully began making her way back towards SkyClan camp.
