Flint and Steel [Closed]

A soft skittering along the ground caught Sparkfire's attention, and she looked up to find a little lizard scampering away in a frenzy. No doubt this lizard had been hunted by Flintshard, only for him to miss it. Her whiskers twitched at the thought of catching it for him. How amazing that would be if she could pull it off.

She had to act fast, though, as it was beginning to quickly get away. She lashed out a paw and tried to trap it underneath, and she was able to trap the lizard's tail. However, all of a sudden, the lizard had plucked its tail off from the rest of its body and continued darting away until it could no longer be seen in the darkness. With a frustrated huff, Sparkfire kicked away the still squirming tail. Oh, well. At least she had managed to catch three other pieces of fresh-kill, one being the elusive squirrel. She was sure she had won the contest at any rate. Oh, bragging to Flintshard, Nightpaw, and Frostpaw about her hunting abilities was going to be so sweet.

One more attempt...To be honest, Flintshard didn't have high hopes. He wasn't sure why he was having so much trouble - perhaps the lizards were just on guard today but it was infuriating to keep missing. And so, he decided to set his sights on the good old faithful - another mouse that was nibbling on what seemed to be a nut it had managed to savage from the murk. Here went nothing, he sighed to himself as he pushed himself from the ground with claws outstretched.

An old faithful it was as he landed on its tail, quickly killing it with a swift bite. Two mice - not much but at least it was something. He picked it up, turning as he padded his way back through the marsh until he found his first catch...Then, he headed to where he had last seen Sparkfire. She sat there, her expression smug as three pieces of prey laid at her paws. A snort escaped him as he dropped his two mice, giving a soft shrug. "Well...Good show, Sparkfire. Seems you have won," he meowed as he sat down, eyeing each of her prey...His gaze landing on the frog. "A frog? I'm surprised," he noted in his monotone. "You've always been clear on your displease toward them. Suppose that makes you the winner more than anything."

Sparkfire saw the two mice her brother carried in his mouth, and she gave her tail a pleased swish behind her, stirring up the pine needles underpaw. She had won, how wonderful. She shrugged at his comment on the frog. "I take competitions very seriously. Not even frogs are safe from me when I'm challenged. That being said, since you lost, you can carry that frog back for me. I refuse to put my mouth anywhere near that thing. In return, I'll bring back one of your mice." She nudged the frog over to her littermate with a large black paw, then took one of his mice and deposited it into her own mini pile. She smirked up at him and meowed, "Better luck next time, Flint," before grabbing the three rodents by their tails, dragging them back towards camp.

"I expected nothing less," he replied as he bent down to pick up the frog, along with his other mouse. He never really got his sister's displeasure for the prey - he enjoyed the taste and it was important they eat everything that they could get, mostly when Leafbare would come around as he had heard tales of how hard it could be to catch things in the bitter weather. But...He also knew that he worked different... Very different so it wasn't his place to judge or comment on.

And while he was somewhat ashamed he had lost, they had still managed to catch five piece of prey on an unofficial patrol. They had done good work and he was certain that Thornstar would be proud. He fell into step behind his sister, half wondering if the contest had been enough to...Bond. A bonding activity, at least, right? He watched her, his stoic face almost having a smile curl across it as he watched her walk with pride. He had trouble connecting with his siblings to be sure, but he was still so proud to call them family.

Sparkfire felt Flintshard's yellow gaze burning her pelt, and she turned her head to look at him, catching his small smile. Even though he lost, he still seemed to have enjoyed himself in her company. And, really, she enjoyed it, too. In all honesty ... she was touched he had decided to make their outing into a competition for her. She stopped, letting him catch up to her, and when he stepped up to her side, she gently nudged her shoulder affectionately into his. The brother and sister then resumed their trek back to camp side by side. It had been a fun day, and it would surely be a fun evening when she got to brag further about her unrivaled hunting skills.
