Flint and Steel [Closed]

It was almost strange to have his warrior name. Flintshard...He had quickly grown used to it, of the way it sounded and played across his tongue. Flintshard. Flintshard and Sparkfire. Half of his litter were warriors now, with Frostpaw and Nightpaw soon behind them if the stars shone bright... A new responsibility was on his shoulders, but it also carried some sort of freedom. No longer was he bound to the watchful eye of Lynxscar, he could leave the camp as he so pleased...And had decided to perhaps take the opportunity to better get to know his sister. "Sparkfire," he called out as he approached where she was resting, giving her the same level look as always. "I'm going hunting, do you wish to join?"

Ear twitching at the call from a very familiar voice, Sparkfire lifted up her head and looked at her brother as he approached. He had been named warrior just about the day after her own ceremony, but being the very first out of her littermates to achieve the status of warrior still filled her with pride. He wanted her to join him on a hunting patrol, huh? She thought about it for a second. It would be nice to get to spend some time with Flintshard, and the two of them didn't even need to be escorted by more experienced warriors. They could make their own patrol. She nodded and stood up. "Count me in."

"Great," he meowed, before turning and leading her out of camp. There was...Perhaps a single problem, he dimly realized as he stepped into the marsh. He didn't have a fondness for small talk, enjoying the simple silence of another's company as his way of bonding...Only cats tended to find the silence awkward while he found the opposite to be true...And he hadn't spent enough time with Sparkfire to be certain of how she preferred it. Hmmm... Already, he found himself lost for words to say as he came to a slight stop, tasting the air for nearby prey, ears perking. Perhaps...

"A contest?" he said, glancing at his sister. "To see who gets the most prey. The winner..." he faltered, having not really thought that far ahead. He wasn't the type for contests, he care to boast about himself or test who was better - each had their own skills but... Sparkfire seemed to like...Pranks. Games. The boastful type, proud of what she could do. They were newly named warriors after all, perhaps something lighthearted was...Appropriate? "I'm unsure on what the winner would get other than bragging rights, I suppose," he said, tilting his head as he waited to see if his sister would accept the offer.

Sparkfire blinked at her brother, a little surprised that he would offer such a challenge, but not at all unwilling. She narrowed her eyes at him smugly with a satisfied swish of her tail. "Heh, well, I was already the first out of the four of us to become a warrior. Being named the best hunter as well wouldn't be too terrible...." With a cheeky grin, the molly slipped away immediately to begin her search, fully intent on winning the competition.

The first prey she located was a mouse. One of the easiest targets for a ShadowClan cat. Perfect. Licking her lips, she lowered herself down into a crouch and stalked up towards it slowly and stealthily, and once she was close enough, she pounced and landed her large black paws on it. It made a tiny squeak, but it hadn't been loud enough to alert the marshes of the presence of two predators. She bit into the back of its neck to kill it, and she turned to face Flintshard with the fresh-kill in her jaws, shooting him a smug look.

Ah, good. He didn't pay much mind to her remark of how she was made warrior first - that meant nothing to actual skill, mostly when they were named so quickly after one another - but instead was happy that she seemed welcome to his challenge. If he lost, then so be it, he could deal with her bragging. If he won...Bonding? Or, wait, would he be getting that either way... He paused to muse over it, blinking a little as he realized she had already turned to go hunting - and had already caught a mouse.

Well, it seemed he was already behind. He nodded his head, a faint acknowledgement of her catch before he turned to go hunting off on his own. Perhaps it would have been wise to decide upon a number they were to aim for but...Ah, they would figure it out, he supposed. He closed his eyes, focusing on what he could hear and the scents around him...Before turning and stalking his way toward a nearby lizard that was resting on a rock, having paused for a brief moment. He approached, silent and deadly before he dropped into a crouch...And leaped.

The acknowledgement that the lizard had paused for a brief moment rung true as it suddenly scampered away, slipping into the mud and leaving the warrior empty pawed. Frogfeet. He was behind now, knowing that it wouldn't take long for Sparkfire to make a second attempt and so he turned and stalked a bit further into the territory, hoping to find something else to catch.

Sparkfire's whiskers twitched with suppressed laughter at Flintshard's miss. Of course, she wasn't in any way making fun of her brother. She just found it amusing that the cat who had challenged her in the first place had been unlucky enough to miss his very first catch. She was sure he would catch his next one, he was almost as skilled at hunting as she was. Almost.

Turning her attention back to her hunting, she resumed the search for another target. Soon enough, she found it. Unfortunately.... Oh, great. A frog. She wrinkled her nose in disgust at the sight of the slimy green thing nestled close to a mud puddle. Oh, how she wanted to abandon it and try to find something else. But what if she couldn't find anything else beyond this frog? She decided to hunt it anyway; normally, she wouldn't dream of it, but she had been challenged, and she was not about to lose!

She stalked up behind it and pounced when she deemed herself close enough, and she landed hard on the frog's back. Landing her large paw on it probably crushed it to death, but just to make sure it was really dead, she hooked it up in her claw and tossed it high into the air, watching it soar through the sky until it landed hard on the ground with a muffled thump. There was no way she was about to nip the back of that foul-tasting creature's neck.

There was one thing that Flintshard had found himself good at, it was picking up noises and scents. He almost thought of it as a fair trade for his...Sensory issue - he could hear the smallest noise but too much meant headaches. So it wasn't hard for him to set his sights on a mouse, its paws scraping at the roots it was traveling along. He crouched, pulling forward with an intense glare. The more he thought about it, the less he wanted to lose this contest. Not that he would't mind if he did...But more that he wanted to prove himself...That he could be a fine warrior despite how he could be overwhelmed with noises.

He sighed softly, crouching as he brought his full attention on the mouse before he judged the distance and made his leap, determined not to miss this one either. His claws struck it, pinning it to the root as it scrambled for a foothold - a way to escape the warrior's clutches. Flintshard ended its life with a swift paw, before gently picking its limp corpse up. He would have to find a place to store his catches for now...And set off to find a dry patch to do so before heading off for his next piece of prey.

With a mouse and a frog already caught and added to her mini fresh-kill pile, Sparkfire had decided to aim for hunting something a little trickier to catch. She remembered how she had managed to catch a rabbit during her first outing with Daisyflame as an apprentice -- of course, she had foolishly thought it to be a big-eared swamp mouse, but she digressed -- so perhaps she could catch something not native to ShadowClan again.

That's when she spotted it. A squirrel searching for food within the spiny shell of a fallen pine cone. This would be tricky indeed, but she was determined to catch it. Like hunting rabbits, she would have to use speed, not just stealth, to catch it. Stalking as close to it as she could before its head shot up, seeming to detect something was amiss, she shot forward and grabbed the creature by its tail. It squealed in alarm, but she quickly silenced it with a swift bite to its throat. It fell limp in her jaws, and pride burst through her. She had just caught herself her very first squirrel! Just wait until Flintshard got a load of her fresh-kill pile.

With the mouse safety tucked away, Flintshard was left wondering what he should set his sights on as he tried to pin-point his next target. He had no doubt that Sparkfire was ahead of him - she had to catch a single other piece of prey to be in the lead and he had faith in her abilities. So...Something simple, easy to catch seemed his best bet. And so, he tasted the air until he caught the scent of a lizard and followed it.

It certainly wasn't the same lizard that had escaped him before, the color being different. But that was fine with him, as it was more likely to be unaware of the dangers that lurked in the shadows. Eyes narrowed, he circled around for a perfect spot to make his approach...Before darting out. But once again, it slipped away from him. If it was in his nature, he would have hissed loudly in annoyance...But instead he simply watched it disappear from sight with the faintest frown on his muzzle. He now had no doubts that he had lost this contest, but perhaps he would give it one last try as he turned and slipped into the shadows.
