Winds of Gold

Atop the stump that overlooked the territory, a pale gold tabby pelt sat, bright eyes gazing over the moors. The moon was almost finished with it's descent, and the sun would soon be rising, judging by the pale pink and yellow sky that was in the process of being painted against the stark navy blue of the night sky. The stars were disappearing one by one, fading out of sight as the world around the lone she-cat began to wake. She had always loved mornings, when the air and earth was quiet. Before the troubles of the day made themselves known, and the normal duties started. Morning hunts were a whole different creature in their own right, bringing home fresh kill to her family before they even woke - with the exception of Barleytuft, who rose as early as she did - was a joy that she took great pride in. This was her chosen spot this morning, lying in wait while the prey in burrows among the roots of the stump and the other critters took their leave for the day. Little did they know that she was prepared for them.

Goldengale slid away from the stump, taking up a position next to some stalks of gorse. They would meld with her pelt, and keep her hidden from her target until it was far too late. The creatures that called the rolling moors home alongside the cats of WindClan slowly began to stir, she could sense them and their scuffling under her paws. Finally, a pair of brown ears hopped out of a nearby burrow, tentatively making it's way into the open. She waited a moment, keeping still as it hopped further away from safety, and closer to her jaws.

All at once, she darted forward, swiftly covering the remaining ground between herself and her target. Too late, it turned, making a last desperate attempt to escape to the confines of it's home underground. As her claws found it, the chase was over as quickly as it had begun, and after a silent thanks to the remaining stars above she picked up the fresh kill and padded back to the nearby gorse. Hopefully there hadn't been too much noise, and the promise of a beautiful day would lure out more prey.

As she stayed still, waiting for more of the animals to emerge, a quail called in the distance. Goldengale's heart stopped momentarily, every time she heard one the image of her brother was brought to mind. His image was faded, foggy with time, but every now and then she could swear she heard his voice in the wind.... Or echoing in the tunnels. There had been several instances while she was working with her father on the tunnel under the Thunderpath that the young voice of her brother had ruffled her ears, making her pause and turn to look. It was never anything that made sense, just a quiet teasing of times long past, squashed out of existence before her brother even had a chance to grow. The day of his disappearance lingered in the back of her mind, and every time she looked into her mother's distant eyes it brought the reminder that their family was not whole.

At least Cloverpaw was still there. And Mistypaw. She still had both of them, even if the brother that finished the light tabby part of their family no longer walked the moors with them. Two bunnies bounded past, pulling the young warrior out of her thoughts. It would take more than a single hare to feed the clan. She bunched her leg muscles to race after them, when the quail from before stepped out in front of her. She froze in place, watching the bird as it meandered past, eyes wide in shock. Withdrawing back into the gorse, she swallowed hard. The thought of pursuing the quail crossed her mind, but as she envisioned it, she knew she'd never be able to land the killing blow. She had turned away from the fresh-kill pile anytime there was a quail upon it, and pointedly refused to eat it. Sure, it was probably rabbit-brained... But she couldn't bring herself to do it. Luckily there would be other opportunities.
