rabbit chasin' (open)

Vinepaw gave a long stretch as she stepped outside the and into the open. It had been a warmer night than usual, but her thin greenleaf fur had at least made sure she wasn't completely dying. Her attitude seemed to be a lot more peppery and bouncy in the morning, and she wanted to at least put this energy to good use, for the clan and whatnot. The moor was always so lonely without company, though, and she knew that she couldn't work out all this energy on prey alone. Bouncing over to the nearest cat, she shouldered up to them. "Hey! Hey! Wanna go hunting?" She mewed brightly. Hopefully they could catch lots of prey and she could become a warrior just as fast- simply through how proud Grousefrost would be!

Morning had never seen Raventail at his best. Sleep was harder to come by nowadays; half the time, his head was so full of things he couldn’t get it to quiet down until he’d passed through the gorse tunnel and walked a lap or five around camp. Patrols to assign, ceremonies to complete. Something brushed against his shoulder, and he blinked to find himself in WindClan’s camp, Vinepaw chirping in his ear, bits of gorse in his fur. Of course. As he turned to look at her, mouth twitching in a slight smile, he could only think, Graybriar’s got her paws full. From the sound of it, apprenticeship hadn't made a dent in Vinepaw's enthusiasm.

Sure, he had things to do, but what harm would there be in a quick hunt? It'd be good to get away from things for a while. Vinepaw’s energy might rub off on him. ”Sure,” he meowed after a brief stretch, hauling himself to his feet, ”as long as we stick to real rabbits.” His hazy eyes scanned the camp. The bigger the patrol, the harder it was to stay quiet—but for him, half the point of hunting was the presence of his Clanmates.

Baypaw snuck out from behind a corner. His hazel gaze rested upon the sight of Vinepaw and Raventail. They were near the camp entrance, probably going out hunting. The morning sun started to create pools of sunlight down on the harsh moor. He bounded to the two cats, enering the sunlight and the shadows with each leap. 

He had gone hunting once with Grousefrost, but then he had his mentor to help him. The cream colored tom really wanted to try to hunt without him telling Baypaw what to do. "Hey!" He mewed cheerfully as he reached the other apprentice and the deputy. "Can I join the  patrol?" He already knew the answer was going to be yes, but he wanted to check in just to make sure.

Vinepaw let out a joyful purr as the deputy agreed. At Baypaw's equally enthusiastic mew, her purr heightened to a loud rumble. "Of course, Baypaw! We're going to be truly unstoppable now!" She bounced over to the camp entrance, tail flicking in excitement. The deputy, and two over excited apprentices. What could go wrong when they had such an efficient and magnificent team?"Those rabbits won't be able to see us coming!"

Baypaw smiled and joyfully bounded after Vinepaw and Raventail out into the rugged moor. He was so excited to go hunting again. "So Raventail, where ar e we hunting?" The cream colored apprentice asked. "Wait....don't tell me, we are going to...." He stumbled a bit as he tried to answer his own question out of excitement. "The Lone stump! Am I right?"

It wasn’t long before the gathering caught someone else’s attention. He immediately recognized the cream-colored tom as Baypaw, the other half of the team that had worked to make Raventail’s tail a bit less fluffy some sunups ago. Naturally, Vinepaw agreed to let Baypaw join. It occurred to Raventail then that, by taking Vinepaw’s offer, he had his paws full now. But, as he’d hoped, the apprentice duo’s enthusiasm was contagious; between that and the thought of being out on the moor again, away from the weight of responsibility, he was already starting to wake up properly.

Grinning despite himself, Raventail let out an exaggerated sigh. ”They might hear you coming, though,” he joked. Then he padded after Baypaw and Vinepaw, keeping his pace somewhat more relaxed until all three of them had passed through the tunnel. The moment Raventail emerged onto the moor, Baypaw had a question. He hadn’t been thinking of anywhere in particular—in fact, he hadn’t thought either apprentice would look to him to guide them. ”You got me,” he said with an apologetic glance toward Vinepaw; he wasn’t sure if she'd had a specific place in mind. ”But really, it depends on—“

At that moment, he spotted something brown and furry in the distance. There was no mistaking the scent the wind blew toward him. Stopping in his tracks, the small tom motioned for Vinepaw and Baypaw to look ahead. Then he started forward in a crouch. Already being downwind gave him an advantage; quiet as he was (though luck played an equally big part), the rabbit didn't notice him as he crept closer, and he was almost on top of it when it finally spun to flee. Raventail snapped its neck quickly—before it could make a sound, he noted with pride, remembering the apprentices were probably watching—and marched back to Vinepaw and Baypaw, smiling as much as one could with a mouth full of rabbit. He dropped it at his paws. "Depends on if there's anything there to catch."

Raventail attempted to catch Rabbit, using 3 stamina. The attempt was successful!

"Whoa" His hazel gaze stared in awe from Raventail and down to the rabbit the deputy had caught. He is so quick to kill... Baypaw was slightly jealous of the older tom for his skill, though his desire to be like Raventail pushed the light apprentice to do better.  

Baypaw crouched down below the tall and pointy grass. The first time he went hunting, he had ran top speed from the beginning to the end, and barely caught the rabbit. With GrouseFrost's advice in mind, the young cream coated tabby tom was sure that he would catch that rabbit if it was the last thing he did.

When he was almost on top of the rabbit, it turned it's head and towards him and ran away. The beige tabby apprentice ran after the prey, but it was already far gone. Danget

Raventail was part way through giving the two apprentices some hunting tips when he suddenly fell silent, his eyes falling on a shape in some grasses that she couldn't see properly. Vinepaw watched in awe as the dark tom stalked closer and closer still, keeping his form perfectly light when- BAM! A small thump was heard and then there was Raventail, padding back to the duo with a large brown rabbit clenched in his jaws. His eyes seemed to shine with pride, and the rabbit dropped to the floor while the deputy continued his speech. She was vibrating with excitement once again, it seemed. Vinepaw was about to hurtle into a great torrent of words, when her brain reminded her that if one rabbit was here then maybe there were more. "Raventail!" She whisper-shouted, trying to keep her volume down to a mildly acceptable level. "That was so cool! I wanna try!"

Vinepaw lifted her nose up and tried to scent rabbit, sniffing around and trampling through the grass. Sadly there didn't seem to be any sign of floppy ears or muddy brown fur, but there was a flash of feathers a few foxlengths away, sticking it's beak into the long grasses and hunting around. Her eyes lit up, and she lowered herself down into a messy imitation of a crouch. Without wasting a second, she pounced toward the unknowing bird, ready to sink her claws into it's wings.

It flew away without a scratch, her amazing pounce missing by a few mousetails, and Vinepaw could only yowl as her muzzle planted itself deep into the dust. She wilted for a second, claws still flexing impatiently.

Vinepaw hunted a bird. She missed her pounce.

Though he’d been hoping for success for the sake of impressing Vinepaw and Baypaw, Raventail’s pelt warmed at their responses, and his smile took on a sheepish tint. The apprentices wanted to try hunting, too; Graybriar and Grousefrost must have taught them the basics already. With a flick of his ear, the dark tom meowed, ”Go right ahead.” Then he settled beside his rabbit, watching as Baypaw sneaked off to catch another rabbit that hadn’t noticed its companion’s disappearance; in a different (and, unfortunately, rabbit-less) direction, Vinepaw set about tracking down more prey.

Baypaw was the first to leap. The rabbit spotted him, however, and when they both broke into a sprint, Baypaw couldn’t quite catch it. Next was Vinepaw, who, judging by how she crouched, had discovered something edible in the grass. She leapt; a bird fluttered to safety, unscathed. Raventail winced at Vinepaw’s yowl. If anything had chosen to stick around, it was as good as gone now. At least that meant it was safe to move on. Picking up his catch again, he rejoined the apprentices. ”You know, Vinepaw,” he said, muffled; before continuing, he dropped the rabbit, ”that wasn’t a bad pounce. You were both downwind, too.” The way he saw it, these things were luck half the time, anyway. StarClan knew he didn’t catch everything he went after. Being smaller than many warrior-aged WindClanners had its disadvantages, especially when speed was involved.

As Vinepaw didn't seem to have any protests, Raventail hastily buried the rabbit and turned his paws in the Lone Stump's direction. It wasn't long before another scent reached his nose. Hadn’t they scared everything off? A splash of red amidst the heather caught his eye. He crouched again, less patient this time. One of his paws came down too heavily. Though he leapt forward, stretching as far as he could, his target took off with a low, loud squawk; in an instant, it had put so much distance between them that Raventail could hardly spot its bright feathers. He sighed once, quietly, then turned back to Baypaw and Vinepaw with a shrug, face hot from a different sort of embarrassment.
