There's a First Time for Everything

Briarpaw walked up to the camp entrance. The greenleaf sun shone down on them, heating up the moors. Even with the small amount of warrior training he had when he was a Medicine Cat, Briarpaw had never been out hunting. His mentor, Deerhawk had showed him how, but Briarpaw hadn't tried it out on actual animals yet. However, he realy wanted too. So, he was going to convince a warrior or two to come with him out of camp. His green eyes scanned the camp, looking for anyone who wasn't doing anything. Of course, there were several. He walked up to the closest one. "Hey! Would you be up for a hunting patrol?"

Raventail had, in fact, been very busy—if daydreaming was the sort of thing that kept a cat busy. Briarpaw’s voice brought him back to the real world. Ears angling toward the apprentice, Raventail twisted to look at him, frowning in thought. He sort of knew this one—WindClan’s medicine cat before Aspenpaw, judging by what Finchstar had said during his ceremony. What was his name? Bramble…Bracken… ”Oh, Briarpaw,” he said, surprised at his own memory.

With that out of the way, he considered what Briarpaw had actually asked. It was true he had wanted to wander again today, especially since Swiftstep hadn’t given him any duties to take care of, but one little patrol couldn’t hurt. Besides, it would be good for him. Knowing his Clanmates’ names was a step, but there was so much more to learn about them. ”Sounds more exciting than sunbathing. I'm in.” Raventail clambered to his paws with less grace than one might expect from a WindClan cat; once standing, he shook the last blades of grass out of his fur.

Briarpaw beamed at Raventail as he agreed to come with him. "Great. Let's go!" He bounded towards the camp entrance, and then out into the moors. He stood there, taking in the scents of the warm heather as he waited for Raventail to catch up. "Do you think we should stick together," Briarpaw said once The young warrior poked his head out of the camp. "Or should we split up? I haven't realy been out hunting before..."

Just like that, Briarpaw was off. Raventail blinked, momentarily disarmed by the older cat’s energy; he recovered quickly enough to follow the gray-striped tail through the gorse tunnel and emerged a few moments after Briarpaw. As ever, the moor was quiet save for the hum of wind in his ears and, of course, Briarpaw himself. ”Your first hunt, huh? I’m honored,” Raventail said lightly, padding over to stand beside his hunting companion. ”Sticking together is more fun. Don’t worry, I won’t get in your way.” His reasoning was twofold: first, conversation was harder if the involved parties were on opposite sides of the moor; and second, if something bad happened, he would be close enough to help—at least close enough to try. With that settled, Raventail started forward, muzzle raised into the breeze.

OOC: Sorry for the late reply, I went on a two day backpacking trip!

Briarpaw looked at Raventail, and how he knew what to do. As he saw the warrior was starting to look for prey, he also lifted his muzzle, tasting the air. There! It wasn't long before he caught a scent on the wind. "Raventail!" Briarpaw said in a low voice. "I smell a hare!" He moved his head around, trying to decide where the scent was coming from. Once he had located his target, he moved in. However, he forgot to get downwind of it. Briarpaw creped closer, but as he did, the hare perked up, it's nose moving as it caught his scent. The hare bolted before Briarpaw could get close enough. He chased after it, but it bolted down a hole into the tunnels beneath the moors. "Mouse dung!" Briarpaw said, padding back to Raventail. "I forgot to do something, didn't I?"

ooc: it’s all good—sounds like a fun trip!

Having someone take cues from him, especially when the someone in question was both older and not his apprentice, was strange. Thankfully, when Briarpaw caught the first scent of the hunt, he went ahead on his own. Still as stone to the tip of his tail, Raventail watched Briarpaw advance—and, as the breeze brushed his whiskers and the hare straightened up, realized what was wrong. Soon, Briarpaw’s would-be prey was safe in the tunnels. ”Hey, it happens to everyone,” the dark-furred warrior meowed, giving his hunting partner a quick smile. ”You were close—but you’ve got to stay downwind, or it’ll smell you.” That was one of the reasons Raventail preferred hunting birds; he could be a little less careful about positioning. Dappleshine has it easy, he thought. I bet fish can’t smell at all!

Padding onward, he lifted his muzzle again. Another scent drifted to him—a rabbit that hadn’t been scared off by the commotion. Well, now the pressure was on. He was more aware of the wind than ever as he crouched and began the unbearably slow crawl toward the rabbit. Once he thought he was close enough, he pounced—and, for once, his aim was true. Killing his prey with a quick bite, Raventail stepped back. No matter how many patrols he went on, he felt the same rush of pride whenever he managed to catch something. ”See? Something like that.”

Raventail attempted to catch Rabbit, using 3 stamina. The attempt was successful!

"Okay." Briarpaw lifted his muzzle once again, searching for a scent. He found one of a bird. Once he had located it, sitting on top of a protruding rock, he quickly began to stalk it. As he remembered Raventails council, he slowed down, making sure to get downwind from his prey this time. Briarpaw crept closer, getting ready to pounce. He leaped, landing on top of the bird with his claws extended. He leaned down and bit its neak, not letting go until it stopped jerking. Briarpaw grabbed his catch, happily walking back to the warrior. "Was that good?"

Glad Briarpaw hadn’t taken his advice badly, Raventail hung back again to watch the apprentice attempt his next catch. Thankfully, Briarpaw’s pounce was clean, and he was soon trotting back with the bird in his mouth. Raventail reminded himself that they were on a hunt—and, therefore, that he needed to be quiet—before he spoke. ”That was great, it didn’t even see you!”

Now it was his turn. Hunting like this was so much more fun than some boring old patrol… Turning, the dark warrior scanned the hills. It was difficult to spot amidst the heather, but Raventail’s eyes were keen: surprisingly close, considering he and Briarpaw hadn’t exactly been quiet, was a lizard weaving its way through the grasses. This was neither the time nor the place for showing off, but a cat could dream, right? He waited for the lizard to stop, giving it a moment to enjoy the greenleaf sun; then he sprang. It was dead almost the moment he had it in his claws, and he brought it back with his head held high. He hadn't expected that to work out nearly so well.
