One moment they were walking, all together, and the next Barleytuft was shouting about dogs. Mothpaw didn't hesitate to leap into action, following Dapplepaw and leaping at the dog she was currently fighting. They had to get through here, get to the mountains and bring their Clanmates home. It was that sheer determination that led her to attack so desperately, trying and failing to use her larger-than-average size to her advantage.

Heronflight didn't have time to think when he and the patrol were ambushed by dogs.  He knew about the warnings about dogs, and had faced other, different dogs when he was stranded near the lake.  The gray tabby knew how dangerous those dogs were, and he prepared to fight them with all of his strength.  Spotting the nearest dog, he sprinted towards it before smashing through the pitch-black beast.  He saw the surprised reaction on its face.

Poppyheart’s eyes widened, his fur bushing out and his heartbeat quickening in pace at the alarmed cry from Barleytuft. Dogs! Why did it have to be dogs! Right after the WindClan tom’s cry, the air filled with the excited barks of those awful brutes. He could see an entire pack of them running down the mountainside. Oh, great StarClan....

All the cats in his patrol immediately leaped into battle, some of them being attacked by the many dogs while others struggled to fight them off. He spotted the cream-colored RiverClan tom Berrycloud being smacked away by the large, heavy paw of a large brown dog, and, being closer to them, he leaped at its side with a mighty caterwaul, using his momentum and pushing out with his legs to knock the beast over.

Watching as the dog rather pathetically flailed its legs around trying to get back up, Poppyheart took the opportunity to rush to Berrycloud’s side, pressing his russet shoulder into the RiverClan’s cream one to help him back up to his paws. ”Are you alright?” he mewed urgently. Even if there were a chance this tom wouldn’t appreciate the help of temporarily disabling the dog or helping him back up, he was still a part of the patrol summoned by StarClan themselves. Plus, he didn’t want any of his fellow cats to die.

Berrycloud was paralyzed when the dogs showed and all the memories of that horrible day came back to him like the flood that destroyed their home. The image of his brother being tossed away at a rock, leaving a trail of blood on it... Eaglebrook abandoning him when he needed her most... Silverfang... being killed by that half-blind dog... Everything crossed his eyes like a cascada, and suddenly... the pain returned him back to reality. The large golden tom rolled over his body when the paw hit his body but he didn't have enough time to fight when suddenly that Shadowclan warrior showed up to help. A little shaky, he used Poppyheart's shoulder to stand up and he nodded, trying to recover himself from the shock. "Yes, I am. Sorry for the trouble." He mewed before unsheathing his claws and rearing up to slam the dog's chest.

Berrycloud used Rear-up to Slash on Dog #3, dealing 13 damage and costing 15 stamina.

And finally, the alpha and the last dog showed up in the battle. Even with his one eye, he could see that one of his dogs was facing two of those hateful cats. With a deep snarl, the black and white canine jumped toward the orange-furred tom and bit its back harshly. Like before, the alpha had no compassion and the taste of blood just excited him more.

Meanwhile, the second predator fixed his eyes on one of the small cats that were fighting their partner. He lifted its paw and hit the small she-cat, sending her straight to a close stone so she wouldn't be able to fight anymore.

Night purred, his dark whiskers twitching as the young WindClan warrior introduced himself with vigor, and all at once the courteous memory he had chased after returned.  "Ah, it's a pleasure to meet you Barleytuft, I apologize, after many moons on my own remembering new names has become a bit hard."  For a moment, conversation halted as Night looked down, carefully stepping towards out onto the narrow pathway, brow furrowed in concentration.  Soon enough though, they were over the worst of it, and his smile returned.  "Yes, this path the Clans have followed proved to be tough and full of hardship...but it's thanks to cats like you that they made it here at all.  The strong carrying the weak, those with everything helping those with nothing...it's honorable."  Like the Tribe he couldn't help thinking; after all he had been through with SkyClan, he could not find it within his heart to consider it the place he truly learned the meaning of honor.  As the conversation continued though, Night's attention was drawn away, not out of rudeness but out of suspicion.  His leaf-green eyes narrowed; what was it that he was seeing?  A...rock?  Dead bush, waving in the breeze?  No.  As soon as his fur began to stand on end, Barleytuft cried out his fears confirmed; a dog.  Instantly on his toes, the black-pelted exile felt his heart drop into his stomach as - exhaling a hiss of fear - another dog came around the corner of the mountain.  Great StarClan, what is this?!  There were never dogs here in my day!  Where did they come from?  

No time to think though; they were coming towards the group, fast.  Baring his teeth, Night yowled at the dog that was coming straight for him, but as his instincts kicked in about to send his paws leaping out of the way, he realized that there was no room.  A cliff met him on one side, and the other cats and dogs on the other.  Eyes wide, the tom's paws scrabbled to get away, but not quick enough; with a scream of pain, the dog's claws slammed down on his shoulder, batting him towards the cliff like a piece of prey.  Digging his claws into the hard ground, heart pounding at the thought of going over the edge, Night wasted no time in bouncing back, springing not at the dog's waiting face but at its flank, latching on with his claws and scaling the creature until he clung to it's back.  Digging in his claws and teeth, he worked to shred as much of the beast's skin as she could, while also dodging it's grabbing fangs.  He could hear his patrolmates locked into battles of their own, and he couldn't help but shiver.  Please...we need to make it out of this.  They have families to get back to...all of these cats have a future waiting for them, and I need to do all I can to make sure they get to live it.

Night used Leap-and-Hold on Dog #5, costing 10 stamina and dealing 9 damage.  Move in effect for 1 turn.

Happy to see the tom from his Clan’s allied Clan had accepted his help, Poppyheart watched as Berrycloud launched himself at the dog who had just attacked him. He had been about to leap back into action when another dog appeared right behind him, this one having a missing eye. Before he could move or scream, he felt powerful jaws and blunt fangs dig deep into his back. He squealed in agony, which then turned into a raging yowl. He twisted around in the beast’s grasp, claws flying everywhere, managing to score into its face a few times.

Silence fell for a moment, the wind howling the only sound as they padded across the cold ground, before the leader of their patrol - Night-something? - called for them to head right. Strom headed along with the rest of them, his mind on nothing in particular. The sound of conversation between the two toms nearby wafted over on the wind, barely audible over the gale howling down, but it was a pleasant, normal sound that helped ease any tension he held. A smile came over his maw as he remembered nights talking with his brother and sister, before....

A smell blew in on the wind, a smell that stirred unpleasant memories. For just a moment, panic came over him as he snapped his head up. A caterwaul came from the WindClan tom just as a figure came pounding over the stony ground towards them. Wh-what- no. Not..... His widened eyes took in the snarl on the creature's face as it tore at Night, the absolute joyous rage on its face as he froze.

And the dam broke.

The snow around his legs froze him to the ground as the howling wind tore into his fur. A red-furred form crouched in the snow, its head swinging from side to side as it searched for someone. The foam in its mouth glinted in the dim light, its bared teeth stained and openly snarling. Suddenly, crazed yellow eyes turned towards him. And focused. He couldn't breath as it leaped towards him, ice instead of breath locked in his lungs as its jaws stretched out for his throat. Its hateful yellow eyes consumed him, blood streaming from its pelt. He couldn't move. Yellow eyes locked on his. Green on yellow. A form streaked out of the darkness just before the monster hit, and they both tumbled away from him in a maelstrom of snow and cold. Jaws of a cat locked onto the predator's throat as it crunched into her back. A painful snap sounded; blood spilled over his paws. And the yellow died.

Sound came back to him, real sounds that punched into his ears with a ferocity that made him want to curl up. Sight returned a moment later, the memories that had seemed so real receding until he saw almost the vision of his worst nightmares tearing at these cats he knew. Suddenly, he realized he was shivering, his paws rooted to the ground. But he couldn't move as terror clawed at his heart, a fear so palpable he nearly collapsed from the wobbling of his limbs.

No, no, no..... This can't... it's not happening. It's just a nightmare, it's not real. That never happened. Nothing ever happened.... No matter how hard he tried he couldn't block it out. He could still see the pack of dogs ripping into the others, and as he watched one tore into Poppyheart's back. The tom's pained scream rent the air, and he squeezed his eyes shut, moisture leaking from the corners as it felt like his mind was being ripped apart. I can't.... I can't do anything. This isn't....

He opened them desperately just in time to see a second dog lift its paw. A tremble ran down his legs despite himself as it smashed into Mothpaw, the young she-cat flung away to land with a thud on a stone nearby. Heart thudding in his chest, time almost seemed to slow as he saw the limp pelt of his friend flattened by the wind, the dog snarling down at her. The thudding quickened as a different emotion began to taint the edges of his fear, boiling up until it was choking his throat. Will you let those memories control you forever? Remember what Mottledspark taught you.... A paw lifted from its frozen position on the ground, almost as though in a dream.

Will you let them control you?

His legs began pumping in a rhythm, a snarl of pure rage breaking over his face as his fur bushed to twice its size. The dog looked like it hadn't seen him, too focused on the cat lying on the ground to see him barreling towards it.

Or will you fight?

With a screech, he flexed his hind legs and jumped straight at it, knocking the unsuspecting dog backwards as he latched onto it with teeth and claws. Satisfaction ripped savagely through the fear and anger as hot blood flowed into his mouth. A satisfaction that finally he had managed to do something, to throw off his fears - if only for a moment.

Crowfur felt his fur prickle at the mention of dogs. The tom prepared to fight as he unsheathed his claws. Before he could do anything, he felt a pair of jaws clamp down on the back of his neck, lift him slightly, and then shake him around violently. He sucked in a breath as the whole world around him began to spin. After a few moments of this, both bodies tumbled to the ground when someone else decided to join by tackling the dog to the ground. He let out a hiss of annoyance as he dizzily sat. He quickly glanced at Heronflight and nodded a thank you. Crowfur shakily stood up and attempted to regain steady vision. Stupid mutt.

Crowfur is no longer stunned.

Unfortunately, Barleytuft knew that he was too slow even before the dog's jaws clamped on his tail. He didn't have the traction on the stone that he had on the moor and he had felt himself slipping and losing ground ever so slightly right away.  Barleytuft let out a hiss of pain, but mostly he wheezed as he was flung and the breath was squeezed out of him. The cream tabby came to a stop on his side and immediately let out a low groan of pain, feeling his tail throb where it had been bitten. His vision was nearly black with the pain, and in the near distance he heard more snarling, howling, and caterwauls of fury. The lean tom gritted his teeth, trying to steel himself against the pain and fight again.

Barleytuft is stunned for one more turn.

The blow hit with a satisfying thump, but admittedly even the dog didn't want the cat - or themself - going over the edge of the cliff. It sure wouldn't get much satisfaction from thin air; it wanted a creature to gnash on. Thankfully the cat recovered quicly, as cats were wont to do, and the pale gray dog readied themself for the attack. The creature expected another head-on charge, and so they were very surprised when the black cat when shooting by and, suddenly, pain shot through their haunches. The dog let out a screech of fury, realizing that the cat had climbed onto their shoulders and was now digging in like some rabid little monster. It hurt. The canine had forgotten how bad fighting cats could hurt - and now, they couldn't reach the little furball.

Dog #5 is held for this turn.

Immediately the dark gray dog's attention was drawn from the cat it threw by another smaller cat that launched itself across the gap between them. At first, the dog hadn't realized what had hit them, but when it tried to roll to its feet its eyes locked on the form of a small silvery-gray cat. The gray dog bared its fangs, but before they could get fully upright a second cat launched into their side. The dog yelped with surprise and pain as it smacked back down against the hard stone, but this time it quickly recovered - only to get slammed into again. This time it did not fall but only stumble, recovering to immediately launch itself back at the first cat it had been attacking. One heavy paw slammed into the dazed WindClan warrior, raking him and sending him scrambling backwards helplessly.

Dog #6 used Heavy Blow on Barleytuft, using 20 stamina and dealing 25 damage. Barleytuft is stunned for one more turn.

Dapplepaw flinched as she saw another dog sprinting towards her and Mothpaw, she remembered her nickname that she had introduced herself with when she was a kit fondly. Closing her eyes to brace for impact, the only thing that came was a dull whap. Opening her eyes, she saw Mothpaw laying on the ground a short distance away, and didn't seem to be moving. Fear gripped her paws and she froze, staring at the other apprentice. Perhaps she had bitten off more than she could chew volunteering for this mission.... The yelping cut through her thoughts quickly, and after ensuring the second dog was occupied by another cat she turned back to the one Wasppaw was fighting with her as it continued after Barleytuft. Sprinting forward with her claws extended, she swiftly slid under the dogs belly the same way she had just seen Wasppaw do, striking up furiously at it before wriggling out from under it and standing at Wasppaw's side.

The big alpha growled when that fire-furred tom dared to attack him back. With his fangs dripping saliva and blood, the huge grey and white dog hit the tom's face with his paw, letting him fly away toward a rock. Snarling, he looked at Poppyheart with his one blue eye, ready to give him the final blow and finally have something to eat for his pack.

The world spun with unbearable pain at the sudden strike to Poppyheart’s head. He moaned dizzily and struggled to focus on the monster of a dog looming over him. His ears drew back, suddenly filled with intense fear. He didn’t want to be eaten! But he still couldn’t back down, not until the very end, even if he did end up becoming prey to this beast!

Unsheathing his claws, he aimed one last swipe at the dog’s nose, slicing it open and splashing himself with scarlet droplets.
