When the River Freezes

Lightstep shook his sleek snowy white coat which stood out now that some of the snow had melted. The young warrior was grateful that newleaf seemed to be arriving, but other warriors and elders warned that sometimes there was a false thaw. He hoped this wasn't the case, but still, he wasn't about to let the decent weather go to waste. Lightstep had told Myrtlepaw the previous night that they would go hunting in the forested part of their territory. Now the tom waited near the camp entrance for any sign of his apprentice, who was a few moons into her training.

The small marbled tabby padded out of the apprentices' den, pausing briefly outside of it to scan the camp before she spotted Lightstep waiting by the entrance to the camp. He was a little hard to see still with the snow still left on the ground. Myrtlepaw met his gaze and offered one of her signature quiet smiles, trotting over to meet her mentor.

"Good morning. Are we hunting today...?"

Lightstep spotted Myrtlepaw making her way across the camp and offered the young she-cat a mild, welcoming smile. She offered one in return as she approached him. Once the tabby she-cat had reached his side, Lightstep licked her ears once in greeting. She asked a question as he drew back and he responded, "Yes, I thought with the river unreliably frozen it might be good to practice hunting in the forested parts of our territory for land creatures." Lightstep turned from his apprentice towards the camp's exit and mewed, "Remember, we have to stay far from the Gorge. Any other dry land is fair game for this hunt. Be alert for the sounds of dogs." Then he flicked his tail, signaling their departure, and he began to dash off through the slowly melting snow.

After trotting through the more foliage-covered parts of the territory for a few minutes, Lightstep slowed to a halt, feeling gross from some of the muddy slush that splashed his pelt. He'd have plenty of time to groom later, however; now it was time to hunt!

Lightstep turned to his apprentice and meowed, "Alright, Myrtlepaw, I want you to catch two pieces of prey. If you do well today I'll tell Jaystar, and then perhaps you can be a warrior."

With that said, Lightstep nodded, letting Myrtlepaw wander off whichever way she chose. Once she was out of sight, Lightstep sought his own prey. A somewhat unfamiliar scrabbling sound caught his attention as he spotted a bushy tail disappearing into some underbrush. What was that? he thought, parting his lips to draw in the scent. His memory was jogged by that and he dropped into the proper position to hunt a squirrel. With a skillful leap he crushed the small fluffy creature under his paws.
