Morning Light

Sunlight filtered through the snow-topped trees, bathing Thunderclan's territory with a golden glow. Birds fluttered from branch to branch, piping out warnings to one another in some strange language. A fox! A dog! A badger! Their calls were ceaseless.
Below, three cats wound their way through the forest. Their ears were pricked, their jaws half-open as they tested the air.

"How much further do we have to go, Emberheart?" A fluffy tabby tom trailed behind the others, his tufted ears flat against his head. Lynxpaw's legs ached, and they had yet to spot any prey. "I doubt there's anything out here. It's not like we'll just stumble into a mouse nest."

Falconpaw was bouncing ahead of the other two, laughing. "Aw, c'mon, Lynxpaw, we'll find something if we keep our noses and ears on the lookout!" The light brown tabby looked back at her companions, a warrior and one of the apprentices that had recently been taken by Twolegs. Emberheart was beautiful, fluffy and russet-colored. The young cat had to fight back the kitlike urge to run back and pounce on the large, thick tail. Lynxpaw had no tail at all, she was guessing that was how he had earned his name. Stopping for a moment, she sniffed around. Nothing. Without missing a beat, she trotted forwards once again.

"Falconpaw is right, Lynxpaw," Emberheart said quietly, letting Falconpaw take the lead for now and turning her head to look at Lynxpaw. "But we certainly aren't going to find anything if you keep complaining. What, do you think the prey can't hear? They've got ears, same as you, and they're not going to come towards the noise." She fell silent for a moment after that, checking for prey and finding nothing. Truthfully, she hoped they would find something soon as well, but she was also trying to practice patience. Waiting for the prey to come to them would hopefully work, if they were careful and quiet. She looked up, into the trees, at the birds going from one branch to another. They were too high to reach without climbing, but climbing was guaranteed to disturb them. So close, and yet just out of reach.

"Yeah, yeah." Lynxpaw scowled, his short tail twitching. "It's not like we'll find anything anyway."

Just then, a series of scuffles caught Lynxpaw's attention. He stared upward, his tufted ears twitching as he watched two squirrels engaged in what could be described as a bloody, desperate battle to the death in the treetops. One of the squirrels lost it's purchase, and the other, seizing it's chance, attacked. The first squirrel slipped, falling, falling, falling.
It landed with a plop, and Lynxpaw pounced, killing it in a heartbeat. With a faint purr, the small tom trotted back to the others with the squirrel in his jaws.
"Unlucky squirrel." The tom mewed, dropping it at Emberheart's feet and trying not to look too pleased with himself.

Stopping in her bounding, ears alert, Falconpaw listened intently to the pattering of small paws. Dropping into a crouch and stalking towards the sound. she came upon a young mouse. She froze, as it pattered closer, unaware of the predator watching it. She tensed to leap, and the brown rodent turned to run, but before it could, she was on it, ending it's life quickly with a nip to the spine. Picking up her catch, the padded back to Lynxpaw, grinning at his squirrel.

Emberheart's tail twitched as she spotted the surviving squirrel that had been fighting Lynxpaw's catch. It was alive, yes, but injured. If she was careful with her approach, she might be able to catch it. She didn't quite think her plan of action through, though: climbing into the tree was easy enough, but the squirrel wasn't too injured to run faster than she could climb into its little hiding place. Her expression mildly frustrated, she came back down. "Good catch, both of you. One more attempt for each of us should be fine, and then we can return to camp with what we've caught." With just a little bit of luck, she wouldn't be empty-pawed when they did.
