Training For Nightpaw [Closed]

Minnowcall got up and exited the warrior's den, the morning air was cold and the sky where clear. She looked up and took a deep breath and looked around a little. She padded towards the apprentice den, today were a perfect day to bring Nightpaw out for training. She stuck her head into the apprentice den and looked around for her apprentice "Nightpaw, training starts soon, I'll wait by the camp exit" she let out a meow with her soft voice.

She trotted over to the prey pile and picked out a small toad to eat while waiting for Nightpaw to join her. She sat down by the camp exit and started eating to toad. Once she had finished it she started brushing her fur, making sure her pelt looked perfect.

Nightpaw had barely slept last night in the apprentice den. He'd rolled around excitedly in his den for a while, still getting used to not lying against his mother's side, much to the annoyance of his denmates. He was so excited to finally be an apprentice.

He woke up a little groggy, but snapped to attention when he heard his mentor's voice. His mentor! An excited purr rose up as he quickly groomed himself, brushing the flecks of moss from his fur, before rushing out of the den.

He saw his mentor beside the entrance and padded over to her.
"Hello Minnowcall." he mewed politely, his voice ready to burst with suppressed excitement "What are we going to do today? Hunt? Battle practice? Defend our borders?" he paused for a moment "See the borders?" he was definitely getting ahead of himself

Minnowcall giggled at the young tom's excitement "Well, I'm gonna start of by showing you the borders and then we are gonna do both some hunting and battle training so I know what we'll have to train on the most so you can become as good as possible" she purred. "So let's go!".

She got up and walked out of camp with Nightpaw, she headed towards Thunderpath, she wanted to get that out of the way and make sure that Nightpaw knew the dangers of the Thunderpath, she had lost her bestfriend Rosepaw to the Thunderpath many moons ago and she did not want any other cat to get crushed by a monster.

Nightpaw nodded attentively, then padded after her as fast as his short legs could take him. The smell of pine swept over him, reminding him of when his father had brought him back some pine needles when he'd begged to see the forest. He'd been annoyed at the time, but now the smell was a comfort.

Unfortunately that scent soon soured with a pungent scent that made him wrinkle his nose in disgust.
"Yuck! What is that smell?"

Minnowcall looked back at the young tom with a slight smile "It's the Thunderpath, and on it are monsters" she looked at the dark path infront of them "Promise to never set a paw on it unless you really have to, when I were younger my bestfriend got crushed by a monster here, I don't want anyone else to suffer the same fate as her" she heard the roar of a monster in the distance and backed away from the path. The moster charged forward at the Thunderpath with a loud roar. Minnowcall turned towards Nightpaw "Come on let's go" she meowed.

She started walking the Carrionplace, there where usally plenty of rat's so they could do some hunting there. She glanced back at Nightpaw to see if he where following her.

The thunderpath... The elders had told him stories, but he hadn't believed there were really monsters on it!
"I promise." He mewed solemnly. Just as he spoke, a rumbling sound started building up. Following his mentor's footsteps he padded backwards quickly. He cowered, fur bristling as a huge monster sped past, roaring. He probably looked more like a spooked ball of fur than a cat.

He followed after his mentor, calming down at her more calm demeanour.
"Where are we going now?" He questioned, taking about twice as many steps as she did with his small, still kit-like legs.

"We're on our way towards the Carrionplace, I thought we could do some hunting there since there's always a few rats around" she told him as she keept a steady pace through the pine forest making sure that Nightpaw didn't get left behind.

Once they where close to the Carrionplace she stopped and turned towards Nightpaw with a smile "Okay, we're almost there now so how about you show me a hunting crouch? And I will help you get it right" she meowed.

Rats were always the strangest thing on the fresh-kill pile, other than toads nothing was more divisive on whether cats liked them. Nightpaw loved the taste, but knew his mother would wrinkle her nose to it. He was excited to be catching one! The thought that he might miss his catch wasn't even at the edge of his mind.

This was his first chance to prove himself! Nightpaw felt a rush of excitement as he dropped into a clumsy hunting stance. His basic crouch was... okay. But his tail was pointing mostly upwards, and he was off balance. If he started to move he'd wobble at best and fall at worst.

Minnowcall studied his crouch and nodded slowly "Lower you'r tail, it should be as close to the ground as possible without touching it. And you need to have a better balance, keeping you'r tail lower and straight will help a little." she meowed as she too dropped into a crouch "You'r paws should be positions like mine, that way you'll gain more balance" she told him. She took a few steps forward "Take long steps and be light on you'r paws, that way the prey won't hear you coming and sneak up behind so they can't see you" she meowed with a slight smile.

She tasted the air "Good.. The wind is blowing towards us so the prey won't be able to scent us if we sneak up behind them" she let out a satisfied purr, the odds were in their favour and she were sure that they'd manage to catch something. "Oh and go for the neck, if you manage to snap the neck of you'r prey quickly they won't be able to make a sound and that way the other prey that's around won't suspect a thing" she told Nightpaw.

Nightpaw corrected his tail, and practiced a few long steps, distributing his weight much better. The ground still crinkled slightly underfoot, the tom was still chubby from kithood spoiling. He stalked forwards slightly, listening to his mentor's advice and sniffing the air. He could smell a rat. Forcing his tail still and low he stalked forward.

He caught sight of the creature at the base of a pine tree, nibbling at something. His tail lashed slightly, but he forced it still. He prowled forwards, crouching slightly lower before he sprung. He landed with paws firmly on the prey's tail. The rest tried to scurry away, tail slipping free, but he grasped it again, biting it's neck.

It wasn't the cleanest kill, but he was incredibly proud. He'd caught something on his first try! An eager purr rose in his throat ad he padded back to his mentor with the rat grasped in his mouth.

Minnowcall looked at Nightpaw in suprise, she hadn't expected him to catch something on his first try, hunting wasn't all too easy after all. She smiled encouraging "That was great! Next time try to go for the neck directly so the rat doesn't have time to make a sound and warn the other prey. Otherwise it was almost completly perfect!" she purred happly, pround of her apprentice and his first kill, yeah it had been sort of messy but he caught it!

"You wanna hunt some more or should we keep moving and then do some battle training a little later?" she asked him with a smile, she wasn't really a fan of battles but it were important that Nightpaw knew how to defend himself or he could end up dead.
