It's a Good Day to Hunt (closed)

It was a nice day for a hunting patrol. All sorts of different scents hit Scarletsong. She quickly caught a faint whiff of rabbit and squirrel. "What can you smell, Harepaw?" she purred. She was feeling happy today. It had been a fruitful training session, and Harepaw had managed to learn the basics of battle very quickly. She was determined to help Harepaw learn how to hunt as well. The air was chilly and it seemed to bite her skin despite her thick and fluffy ginger fur, but prey was everywhere. She could sense that it was going to be a successful hunting patrol.

Ever since the day of the eclipse, she had been in a rather gloomy mood. But her training session with Harepaw had taken the worries off her mind.Hopefully I'll have enough to do to keep myself busy, she thought to herself. However, the thought of the eclipse still plagued her mind. Had StarClan completely given up on them? Was this only the beginning of something more sinister, and if so, what would happen to them? Suddenly realizing she was thinking too much, she snapped out of it. Stop thinking so much! Its a nice day, and you've got an apprentice to train! she scolded herself. Sighing, she looked up at the dark, bitter sky.

Harepaw was significantly more relaxed now than when his training had began. His mentor's good mood lifted his own, and her own confidence lent itself to him as well; he was sure that she'd help him learn as quickly and effectively as possible, and he looked forward to spending time with someone who wasn't shy with their praise. He had remembered the morning he woke up and the sun was gone as vividly as the rest of the clan, and although it was a disturbing change in his life, he recalled the stories of StarClan that the elders told him as a kit and reassured himself that they were looking out for him even when things seemed scary. He glanced briefly through the foliage at the dark sky, but his attention was drawn to his mentor when she spoke.

"Smell? I smell..." He trailed off as his lifted his nose and opened his mouth. He recognized some scents from the fresh-kill pile and tried to visualize them. "...rabbit, I think. And squirrel, too." He meowed, dropping his head and looking at Scarletsong for instruction.

The chilly air made Scarletsong shudder. She hated the cold. Relaxing a bit, she glanced at Harepaw. He too seemed to be relaxed. This is a good start, she thought as she smiled slightly. Taking in a large breath, Scarletsong began to smell more scents. Mouse... she sensed. She was hungry and felt like she could just run into the forest and devour any prey that stood in her way, but she wasn't here for that. She was here to train her apprentice and bring back prey for the Clan. She was determined to do a good job. "Failure is not an option, she muttered to herself.

 She nodded approvingly when her apprentice managed to answer her correctly. "That's good, Harepaw. You're right. Now I'm going to show you how to catch prey." She looked around, inspecting every single detail around her. The sound of rustling leaves and a tiny bit of movement instantly caught her attention. She quickly spotted a plump, brown squirrel. "Okay, you see that?" She motioned to the squirrel silently with her tail. She quickly dropped down into a crouch. "Make sure your footsteps are silent and muffled," she meowed silently. Once she got to a close enough distance to the squirrel, she took a large leap, landing on top of it and quickly killing it with a bite to the throat.

Harepaw watched her catch the mouse with admiration in his eyes. It was impressive, seamless even. He wondered if he'd ever be as skilled as her. He raised his nose to smell the air once more, searching for the scent of the other prey he'd caught the trail of earlier. That rabbit had to be close. He was anxious at the thought of going after it, but figured he had to take initiative one day and that day might as well be today. He pinpointed the rabbit: hiding at the base of a bush a few tail-lengths away. He copied Scarletsong's form to the best of his ability and stalked it, his tail sticking straight out and his eyes trained on the rabbit with intense focus. He was too focused on it, though, and not enough on his surroundings. Despite her earlier warning, he stepped on a twig and snapped it in half. He could've sworn he heard it echo throughout all of ThunderClan territory, and stood with shame after it heard him and high-tailed it out of there. Maybe if her were closer he could have pursued, but Harepaw hadn't stepped more than a few steps before his screw-up. He sighed in disappointment, afraid to look back at his mentor. Instead the tom kept his gaze lowered to the ground. "I'm sorry..."
