Hunters of the Windy Moors [OPEN HUNTING PATROL]

It was a warm morning when Twistedtail awoke. The first thing the aging Siamese noticed when she woke up was that she was starving. Pulling herself upwards, she made her way to the prey pile, only to find that it was starting to near emptiness. The senior warrior shook her head lightly and sighed. It would be bad if she was to take the last pieces of food, as the kits and elders probably needed it more. That only left one option- go hunting. She wasn’t really looking forward to it— she just woke up, after all— but she knew she didn’t have much of a different choice. “Does anyone want to go hunting?” She meowed as she made her way to the camp entrance, hopefully not so loud that she woke someone up.

Swiftstep padded up to Twistedtail after she asked for company to go on a patrol. It was rather early but the deputy was always an early bird. He had his signature grin as he nodded at the older cat. "I would like to go if you don't mind." he said.

The morning sun was already beating down on her ginger-splashed pelt.Standing up quietly, Poppycloud followed her adoptive father to where Twistedtail was forming a patrol. The older cat's soft call had been enough to arouse her, and now she had a patrol to look forward to. "Morning... can I join you?" she asked, nodding her head respectfully to the two senior warriors.

Being the strict warrior she was, Nightheart was already up, she usually was awake and already getting ready for her daily routines even before the first birds started to sing and the first sunrays started to appear on the horizon, so it wasn’t really a surprise when she padded towards the small group, fully groomed and ready for the day and with a polite expression before lowering her head in greeting “I would like to go”

IC: Twistedtail advanced quickly on the rabbit, which was blissfully unaware of her impending prescense. As her leaping bounds brought her closer and closer the lagomorph looked up and locked eyes with her for a brief moment, before bolting off. She chased after it with quick strides and easily gained up to it.

But right as she unhooked her claws and leaped up in the air for the killing strike, the rabbit turned tail and fled right under her. 

She landed with a small tumble on the ground. Her legs ached from the unexpected fall, but that wasn’t what was on her mind. Why did the rabbit just turn around, almost like if something else was chasing it as well?

And then she looked up.

A large brown hawk, with large beating wings, was rapidly swooping straight towards her and advancing with frightening speed. It’s dark black eyes were trained on her the same way her own were trained on the rabbit and a wave of fear went through her. She swerved around and ran as fast as she can, but the screech of the bird of prey only became louder and closer. ”Somebody! There’s an eagle and it-!”

Before she could finish her call for help she felt talons close around her neck and head and her paws leaving the ground.

For several moments it was pure pain. Deadly sharp talons digger into Twistedtail’s skull and blood trickled down her throat. The Siamese thrashed around and tried to get a grip on something but couldn’t. The only relief that came was when her eyes flitted downwards and found that, fortunately, the eagle wasn’t able to actually carry her away and was only flying a little off the ground, weighed down by the cat in his claws. It was still making slow success, though, and she knew that if she didn’t act soon it’ll succeed with killing her. So the warrior quickly twisted herself around to the best of her ability and raked the eagle’s soft underbelly.

With another screech the large eagle dropped Twistedtail on the ground. Pain flooded her senses as she landed with a thump on the hard ground. She could feel the blood coming out from her now-tattered right ear and the cuts on her neck and face. The warrior tried to heave herself up, only to fall back down in a burst of pain. She curled up in a ball and prayed that someone would come to help her soon.

Nightheart followed her clanmates outside with serious eyes, but a small smile on her muzzle, going out patrolling or hunting had always been one of the main ways she had to deal with problems, even if that meant overworking herself. However, in calmer times like this, she just enjoyed them. Warrior life was a blessing for the dark she-cat, and she couldn’t help but wonder how Medicine Cats could like their work at times instead of running on the moors, chase hares and maybe at times fight for their clan.

As she thought her ears moved constantly, nose picking scents and her half-open mouth allowing her to taste the air. As soon as she detected the scent of prey she immediately turned towards it and got into a crouch. She could quickly identify the smell of hare, and after making sure the wind was on her favor she started to approach it carefully.

Expert steps guided her closer to the smaller animal, which was blissfully oblivious of her presence as she silently moved through the tall grass. Once she was close enough she prepared herself, muscles tense before she leaped into the air and…

A scream.

The dark she-cat fell rather unceremoniously as her concentration was broken, the startled hare now running away as fast as its swift legs could carry it, but Nightheart didn’t care, a hare could always be caught later, the life of a clanmate could never be replaced. Quickly forcing herself up, ignoring the pain from the fall, she turned around quickly and ran towards where she had heard Twistedtail yell for help, her eyes going up when she heard the eagle’s screeches only to see it drop Twistedtail.

She didn’t waste a second, rushing to where she was and immediately using her strong legs in an attempt to reach the eagle that clearly would want to return for what it probably thought a secured catch “Over my dead body, oversized pigeon!” With the momentum accumulated of her run and claws stretched, she aimed to knock the big bird out of the air and make the work easier for her clanmates. They couldn’t let the bird to fly away, they had to kill it. If it flew over their camp and saw kits playing….oh no, that was a risk Nightheart wasn’t willing to take.

The hawk’s dark eyes turned sharply as he heard another screech sound. The first cat was already a large pain for the russet bird to deal with, but now there was a second. There was a moment of fear as the black spotted she-cat knocked him out of the air. For several heartbeats he found himself unable to fly as he tumbled down to the ground in a mess of feathers. He landed on the hard moor grass, though he quickly righted himself and prepared to fly away. Before any of the cats could prepare themselves he was already flying, heading back home. But before he could make it even halfway to the nest he stared to slow down. Those cats had interfered with his hunting! He couldn’t just go back home with empty talons, he had to catch something, even if he had to go with cat. Turning around in the air, the eagle used momentum to quickly speed downwards towards the cats. He flew right over the Black she-cat, dragging his talons down it’s back before speeding away.

Twistedtail couldn’t help but let out a low wail from the pain. The long and deep gashes left in her neck and ear were ten times more painful than simple claws. Why did such a thing have to happen at this time?

She looked up from where she was curled up to see Nightheart knock the eagle out. At first it seemed like the bird was downed for good, but it only got back up and flew away. After the several moments needed for the Siamese warrior to get up, the hawk had turned right around and was speeding towards them. “Look out Nightheart!” she screeched as she saw it’s talons unhook. Not wasting any time, the older cat sprinted towards it at full speed, gripping her claws around it’s scaly legs and dragging it downwards.

IC: Swiftstep ran into the battle, claws unsheathed and ready to go. He saw the Eagle go down under Twistedtail's claws. He hurried to her and once he got close to the struggling creature, he reared up and brought down both his paws onto its head to end its life. The tom turned to both Nightheart and Twistedtail. "You both okay?" he asked with a worried tone.
