”Great job, Goldenpaw,” Scorchfang praised her eldest daughter when she returned with her prey, licking her fondly between the ears.

That was when he saw Curlyfeather stomp back over to the patrol, looking very beaten down; he knew she had lost her catch. He padded over to her and offered her a kind smile, swishing his tail slowly in the air and speaking, ”It’s okay.” He quickly detected another mouse nearby and flicked his ear to grab the deaf warrior’s attention, then crouched down again, but not before flattening his ears against his head to muffle his sense of hearing.

He began to slowly creep forward, looking down at his paws to check where and how slowly he was stepping, before creeping forward. He kept this up, checking himself before moving forward, and while it did seem to take longer he was still making no noise, which was evident in the fact that the mouse hadn’t moved from where it sat eating the fresh newleaf grass. There was one point where he nearly stepped on a brittle twig by accident, but because he was so focused on looking down at his paws he was able to avoid stepping down on it and giving away his position.

When he deemed himself close enough, he took one last quick look around to make sure he wouldn’t muck up his catch before leaping. He landed on the mouse and bent down quickly to nip its throat, and he looked back up at Curlyfeather with a smile. Finally, he nodded to her, letting her know she could try again.

Curlyfeather flattened her ears and resisted curling her upper lip at Socrchfang's reassurance. Right now, she wasn't in the mood for pity. Turning her back on the patrol, she once again scented the air for prey. She couldn't fail again. It couldn't happen. Narrowing her crystal blue eyes, she caught a scent. This time, the furry scent of a mouse hit her nostrils. Trying her very best to be silent, she padded towards the smell's source, locating the small brown rodent. Soon, it would be food for the clan. A trophy for her that showed that she did provide for her clan, to show to the rest of the forest that she wasn't a burden. Something that proved that she was worth something more than a friend or sister. Crouching low, she crawled towards the mouse, silently praying that she wouldn't fail miserably. With every step, she took infinite care not to shift her weight, hoping that all of her movements were silent. A noisy ShadowClanner wasn't worth a piece of crowfood. The moment she was close enough, she decided not to risk waiting to be seen. Using every ounce of effort she had, she tired to jump silently and swiftly. Miraculously, it worked. Landing her jump, she quickly chomped down on the back of the creature's neck, not even trying to be neat. Picking up her catch, she trotted back to her patrol, head held high.

Snakeblaze once again broke from the patrol to search. Perking his ears up, he heard grass being ruffled and tree bark being scraped against. He crouched down and honed in on the sound. He found a rat searching grass for seeds, even though it was already plump. He hesitated as the rat sniffed around, then when it continued searching, he pounced. The rat turned around and sprinted past the roots and into the woods. Snakeblaze shrugged and headed back to the patrol.

Goldenpaw was delighted with her first catch and the praise of Scorchfang. She hoped she wouldn't have to fail at any of her catches in front of her. But Golden was a proud and positive young apprentice and hopped about onward to continue seeking prey.

After a little while she noticed the others had seemed to have found a plethora of mice running about, and she scouted for one of the little creatures for herself. Upon recognizing one that had strayed from it's brethren, she poised herself to jump after it. Once again, the young apprentice caught the object of her desire quickly and efficiently. This time she realized she was becoming bored. She had caught simple prey for a couple weeks now. Maybe if she was lucky she could find something a little more difficult to try for next time.

Littlestar smiled softly at the scene that unfurled before her. Curlyfeather was a strong warrior, and she admired her determination. She never let her disability define her or stop her from accomplishing what she wanted to accomplish. As they deaf warrior padded off in search of prey, Littlestar turned to do the same. This time following the trail of a lizard. Soon she spotted the creature sitting quietly on top of a stick. Making sure to step on the damper of pine needles, she silently made her way towards the lizard before leaping and finishing it off quickly.

Scorchfang stifled a disappointed sigh when he saw that Curlyfeather wasn't paying any attention. He knew she just wanted to prove not only to her Clan but to herself that she was just as capable of hunting, but he really was just trying to help. Instead of sulking, he tried again in offering the deaf warrior a nod of acknowledgement to her caught prey, happy that she was able to catch something. He swiped his tail to the direction of camp and meowed to her, "Go back to camp." He then called to the other patrol members, "The Clan will certainly eat well today. Let's bring our fresh-kill back to camp and offer it to the queens, kits, and elders. Good job, everyone." He bent down to pick up his two mice by the tails and began leading the way back to camp, beckoning with his tail for them -- though specifically Curlyfeather -- to follow.
