Can we start training now? Can we, can we?

The sun slowly rose over the horizon, though it would still be a bit before the Clan territories would be welcome to the warm newleaf light. Fernpaw raced excitedly from where the apprentices slept over to the warriors, a wide and excited grin stretching across her face. Today was the first day of her training and she wasn't gonna wait a second longer! She skidded to a halt before the sleeping warriors, searching through the sleeping crowd for the bushy, golden pelt of her mentor, and once she found him she swished her long tail back and forth before pouncing on him. "Lionstorm! Lionstorm, wake up, it's time to train! Come on, you sleepyhead!"

Lionstorm yowled in surprising launching himself directly up in the air to shake his attacker loose, his great head spinning in an arc to identify the culprit before lighting upon the shaken form of his newest apprentice. At once the large warrior's fur flattened and his features softened, giving the younger cat and affectionate nudge, "I hope I didn't scare you," He mewed gently to Fernpaw, "Probably best you don't pounce on a sleeping warrior, at least until I teach you some basic combat moves, alright?" He asked not unkindly.

The golden cat stretched his pelt out, rolling his stiff muscles, "Have you eaten yet?"

Fernpaw squeaked at the sudden yowl, eyes wide, then calmed down once Lionstorm did. She purred with laughter. ”Sorry! I’ll keep that in mind.” She then shook her head at his question. ”Nope, not yet. I can’t eat yet, remember? The elders and queens and kits need to eat first. And since they’re asleep, I’ll just wait until they all wake up!” She tried to shush her growling belly.

The golden warrior dipped his head in acknowledgement of the apprentice's words, "Well said Fernpaw, I'm impressed," He mewed approvingly at his apprentice, the young warrior felt a surge of affection for the younger cat, she'd make a fine warrior he knew, and he'd make sure of it, "I guess we'd better get to hunting then or we'll all starve."

The larger cat pushed through the entrance and ran out onto the open moorlands with a mew of excitement as the warm dawn light began to spread through his fur and to his stiff, freshly woken limbs, "Scent the air Fernpaw, tell me what you can smell." He urged, while she may not be able to differentiate scents yet, he hoped she could recognise new ones.

Fernpaw was hardly out of breath when she caught up with her mentor, having far too much energy in her to get tired from a simple little sprint across the moor. She nodded and parted her lips to drink in the scents of the territory. Everything smelled so fresh and crisp. But that’s all she could detect. ...Wait, no. She wrinkled her nose as she detected a foul-smelling scent a few tail-lengths away, hiding behind a clump of newly-grown grass. She could see something brown and lumpy with many flies buzzing around it. ”Ewww, what’s that? It smells awful! But everything else smells so fresh and free!”

Lionstorm nodded, wrinkling his own nose with a slight growl, "Crowfood, a waste of good prey." The older cat almost spat the words, he hated wasted prey, particularly after they'd had such a hard leaf-bare, "It's a little overpowering, let's move upwind and see if we can't scent some rabbits or a hare." He mewed padding along, allowing his scent glands to open once they were sufficiently far enough upwind, he could scent two rabbits close by, but he needed Fernpaw to pick them up first.

"Alright Fernpaw, try again."

Fernpaw gave the rotten food a revolted look before following Lionstorm. When she scented the air again, there was no awful scent to distract her. She narrowed her eyes in concentration, then closed them. She had picked up what smelled like rabbit, but she couldn’t tell where it was coming from. ”I think I can smell rabbit. But I can’t tell where it is.”

Lionstorm nodded approvingly, "That will all come in time, if you open your mouth and use the scent glands on the roof of your mouth it'll help you pin point it more easily." The large tom fell into the hunter's crouch, his weight balanced evenly between his haunches and forepaws, "Keep low and distribute your weight evenly so as to not alert your prey through vibrations." His tail stuck out parallel to the ground as he got as close as he could to the rabbits before he powered off on his hind legs, black claws gripping the earth to hurl himself forward.

The massive warrior barrelled into the surprised prey and ended its life swiftly with a bite that cracked skull and crushed brain, wordlessly the golden tom turned his face to the sky and gave thanks to Starclan for the kill as warm blood dripped from his jowls.

”Wow! That was amazing!” the apprentice exclaimed, running up to him. ”I wanna the next!” She closes her eyes and opened her mouth, and she could better differentiate different scents, but only a little. She could smell a second rabbit now, but the fresh blood of the first her mentor just killed kept her from finding it. ”I can smell another one, but this rabbit here is too strong for me to find it,” she confessed apologetically.

Lionstorm nodded, burying his kill quickly, "Burying our prey after the kill serves a few purposes, one it masks the scent enough that we can follow new prey but not so much that we can't find it again, it also protects it from scavengers." He mewed informatively, before pointing to the west with his tail, "The other rabbit is in that direction, do it just as I did and you'll catch your first prey." The older cat told her encouragingly.

”Sneaky! I like it!” Fernpaw purred. She directed her attention to the direction Lionstorm directed her to, and she could finally tell where the rabbit was... somewhat. She crouched and stalked forward, trying to spot the prey as she went. Once she finally spotted its fluffy white tail, she shot herself forward and dashed towards it.

She slammed her shoulder into its side to send it flying, and it landed on its side, stunned. She rushed forward and quickly bit down on its neck to end its suffering. She turned to Lionstorm with bright, sparkling green eyes. ”I did it! I caught the rabbit! Did you see that? I’m gonna take this rabbit straight to Cedarfur and Dewtuft and Quailfeather!”
