Leaving a Scorch in the Mud

(OOC: Mothpaw (SillySunshine) is also going to join this patrol, so no more than three other cats can come along.)

Scorchfang yawned and licked his dry lips as he padded over to the fresh-kill pile, his stomach rumbling hungrily from a long night's rest. Prey was beginning to grow scarce in the marshes and pine forests, and he had been making sure to give a majority -- if not all -- of his share to the elders, queens, kits, and even the apprentices just starting out on their training. They needed to keep their strength up much more than he did, even if his hunger was beginning to wear him down a little.

Unfortunately, the fresh-kill pile was empty. He would have to lead a hunting patrol to feed the Clan. Hopefully he would be able to eat something after the hunt if there was anything left. He trotted to the camp entrance and waited for any cats who would want to join him on his hunting patrol.

"Hey. We need to start a patrol. I'll be your second cat." A female voice stated bluntly. Mothpaw approached, her long fur covered in snowflakes. "Don't think we've met. Name's Mothpaw. Yours?"

Scorchfang turned to the new voice, one he didn't recall ever hearing before. He nodded his greeting to the apprentice. "Nice to meet you, Mothpaw. I'm Scorchfang, one of the Clan's youngest warriors. I heard Violetshine's your mentor. She was my mentor, too." Well, she kinda was. As an apprentice, he was so rude and rebellious, always ditching Violetshine to train with his older brother Crowfur instead. Guilt and regret still lay heavily in his chest at the mere mention of the she-cat; she didn't deserve such disrespect. He fixed Mothpaw with a serious glare. "Violetshine's a good cat, so make sure to treat her with the utmost respect."

Mothpaw nodded, and when she lifted her head there was a genuine smile on her face. "Of course. She has treated me with nothing but kindness and respect thus far; I will continue to do the same for her." She then tilted her head as she looked up at the older cat. "Scorchfang. It's a nice name, very fierce. Suits you." Mothpaw commented dryly, bowing her head to him.

Newtface was the third cat to pad up to the group of two. He tried to keep a neutral, normal expression on his face as he approached the she-cat and the tom. He was still angry. He was angry about Finpaw and the death that he didn't deserve, and he was especially angry about the fact that ThunderClan had been the cause of this. Oh, if he ever had the chance to sink his claws into the flesh of a ThunderClan cat, preferably one who had been involved in Finpaw's death, then they wouldn't hear the last of it. The speckled tom flicked his tail in greeting to both young Mothpaw and Scorchfang.
"Hello, you two," The calico began, "This seems like an awfully small patrol. Allow me to make it bigger."
Hunting would definitely take his mind off of the whole Finpaw situation, Newtface was sure of it.

Firestone heard the conversation between Scorchfang and the apprentice and he couldn't help to join too when they talked about Violetshine. He stood up from the rock where he was resting and approached the group after Newtface. "What about one more joining the party?" He mewed with a smile. Of course, he was faking. He had to. The tom was far from being happy but showing his sorrow to cats that weren't close to him was something he wouldn't allow. His weakness... could only be seen by his dearest friends and no one else. And, on the other side, he had to be friendly and outgoing after what happened with Gingerstripe. He was no longer only the son of a forbidden relationship... he was the brother of a murderer.

"Thanks, Mothpaw," Scorchfang meowed to the apprentice. He nodded in greeting to Newtface and Firestone in turn when they walked over. "Thanks for coming along, the kits could really go for something really tasty and filling." He made his way out of camp, leading his Clanmates to the marshes. He looked down at Mothpaw as they went. "Make sure to hunt within earshot of the rest of us. That way if anyone runs into a predator, we can all work together to drive it off."

He broke away from the patrol to begin his hunt. He scented a mouse running along a fallen branch in the shallow mud, and he licked his lips as he crouched down and stalked towards the branch. He climbed up on one end of it, cutting off the mouse's safest escape route, then he raced along the branch towards it. It darted back and forth on what little room it had on the branch's tip, giving Scorchfang enough time to pin it down with a paw and swiftly take its life with a nip to the back of the neck. He climbed down and buried the fresh-kill underneath some snowy mud before resuming his search for more food.

Mothpaw followed after Scorchfang, watching his technique before nodding approvingly. She then set off to find her own prey, careful to stay withing earshot as instructed. Before long, she saw a vole skittering through the snow. Mothpaw copied Scorchfang's stance, creeping forward slowly. At just the right moment she leapt forward, ending its life swiftly and giving silent thanks to Starclan.
