Tawneypaw's Assessment (closed)

Dandeliondapple breathed in the cold leafbare air. It was harsh, it was fierce, but there was something stronger than the forces of ice and snow. The spirit of cats. Her daughter, in particular, was a strong, spirited cat who she thought was ready to be assessed in full. She went to the apprentices' den and stuck her head in through the entrance, prodding one of the sleeping masses within.

"Tawneypaw, today you prove yourself to your Clan."

Tawneypaw looked up to see her mother poking her. She heard the last few words of what she was saying to her, and she nodded. The tortoiseshell cat rose to her feet and followed her mother out of the den. She knew exactly what Dandeliondapple's words meant. It was time for her assessment.

She led her out into the territory. It was hard to find a good spot with all the snow piled up despite the thick canopy, but Dandeliondapple kept up a search before settling on a copse with a few beech nuts at the roots of the trees. There would likely be prey coming for the scarce food, though the cover of trees would give them an escape route.

"I want you to catch two pieces of prey that run along the forest floor and two pieces of prey that nest in the trees," she said, allowing some room for creativity.

two prey from the ground and two prey from the trees  Tawneypaw repeated to herself.  She set off looking for the two ground prey first.  
#1) The tortoiseshell she-cat scented a mouse and heard a rustle in a small bush near the base of a tree.  She stalked the bush before throwing herself into it with hopes of resurfacing with a mouse, and she did. She buried the mouse in the snow, and moved on.
#2) Tawneypaw was quiet enough that her first attempt to catch something did not disturb the rest of the surrounding territory.  She quickly moved up the trunk of tree, and sat for a heartbeat in order to see if she could catch scent of a squirrel or bird.  The she-cat moved along the branches and saw a squirrel with its fluffy tail in her direction.  She took the squirrel off guard and killed it quickly.
#3) The apprentice stayed in the trees in hopes to catch bird.  She saw an empty half-made nest.  The she-cat  waited for the mother to return, and when she did, Tawneypaw took the opportunity and killed the small bird.
#4) Finally she moved to the ground and scented another mouse and pounced on it, but missed.

Tawneypaw had three of her pieces of prey, and need one more.  The mouse that she had missed hadn't run too far, and so the she-cat followed it and tried again this time she was successful. Tawneypaw sat and waited for Dandeliondapple to find her with her two mice at her paws. She figured she would collect her squirrel and bird once her mentor showed up.
