One Last Hurrah (Closed Hunting Patrol)

Snailbelly sighed. Another day, another patrol. Lately, it felt like he had been on a MILLION of these! When would he ever get rest? Probably never, with all the commotion going on all around him. They had fought ThunderClan recently and were keeping hostages. They had even taken a medicine cat! It made him antsy and anxious, so he made to leave camp and clear his head. A slow day fishing on the river alone would be nice...

That was when everything changed.

Viperpaw was looking for another patrol to do. Finchstream was so skittish, and her fight with Sharptooth the other day made her feel like she had a lot more to prove so she was doing all the work she could. She noticed Snailbelly was going on another patrol. Maybe she could join him. The almost warrior padded up to the warrior. "Can I join your patrol?" She asked.

So stuck into his thoughts, the voice made him jump a little. "Oh! Yeah, sure," he said, trying to smooth over his surprise. Before any other cat could up and bother him, though, he swished through the half-dead leafbare reeds into the territory. However, his trot was slow enough to be followed, as he was not intentionally trying to shake her off his tail. That, and running was too much effort!

The small she-cat nodded before following the tom out into the territory. "Are we just fishing?" Viperpaw asked. She didn't really like causing her body more soreness after the fight with Sharptooth, and anything outside of fishing would cause it. But Snailbelly was the boss and it was up to him to determine what they would be doing. If he wanted to hunting something else besides fish then she would deal with it.

"I think so. Everything has up and hidden in burrows except for fish. You can always rely on those," he mused cheerily. His wounds from Sunningrocks were nearly gone, as they had been rather light, but he knew that the whole Clan still felt theirs. He wanted to be as considerate as possible for his Clanmates.

Viperpaw was a little bit relieved. She would just have to sit there and fish. Nothing extra. "That's true." The apprentice said. She could use this chance to reflect on what happened the other day when she tried to prove herself. They reached the river and the apprentice sat down next to it making sure her shadow wasn't cast upon the water. It would be cold but they needed to eat. "How many do you want me to catch?"

The river was always a good place to sit, relax, and think. As he sat down, he reflected upon that. Sure, he would have preferred being on his lonesome, but maybe having someone else along was not so bad? It was someone else he could talk to, certainly. And an extra paw in the water. The cold prevented him from drifting off sleepily as he liked to do on warm newleaf or greenleaf days, so he was especially thoughtful. "One or two would be good. I can catch... say... two myself."

He looked to the water, studying for any silver flashes. When one began to try and slip past him, he stuck his paw in, sending it sprawling onto the shore. There, it flopped uselessly until its life was brought to an abrupt halt by shining fangs.

Viperpaw nodded, her blue eyes looking down to the water. She looked for the different shapes in the water, looking more so for the flashes of color. Once she spotted one, she quickly slipped a paw into the water, hoping to get the fish up on the shore. She had gotten one up on the shore and quickly killed it before turning back to the water. The tip of her tail flicking a bit in excitement behind her. She didn't know why she was excited about fishing..

It was so hypnotic staring at the river as it flowed on past to who-knew-where, waiting for something to swim through it. Another flash went by and he once again broke the surface to try and scoop it out. His claws hooked into its fishy body and tore it from its watery home. The shiny gray creature struggled helplessly beside Snailbelly, where he proceeded to finish it off. "That's two," he said, surprised by his own efficiency and focus. Perhaps it was that little scrap of a desire to show off...? Be impressive...?

Blue eyes looked over at Snailbelly for a small moment as he caught his second fish. Well now she needed to catch her next one. She let out a small hum as she turned back to the water waiting on a flash to go by. Once she saw something, a blue gray paw flash out into the freezing water and scooped at the fish. The fish landed up on the shore right between the two cats and the apprentice moved quickly to kill it before it flopped back into the water. She couldn't lose her fish right in front of the older warrior. "That's two for me too!" She said a bit too happy, and was a little disgusted with herself.

Snailbelly gave her a grin, eyes shining with mirth. There were now four fish between them, which was a good thing. Their Clan was growing and would need this, should ThunderClan ever come back for more. But in that moment, he was just concerned with Viperpaw. Feeling like he had been staring for a little too long, he broke eye contact and murmured, "We... should get these back to camp." With a twitch in his tail, he took half of their catch in his mouth and led the way to the fresh-kill pile.
