Sweetpaw's fur fluffed up aggressively and she spat angrily at him, leaping away before she could be splashed.

He looked up at Sweetpaw and laughed "Gosh a Riverclan cat thats afraid of water,
sure you're a Riverclan cat? he meowed and grinned.

"Now, now," Splashwillow chided, sidestepping to avoid the chilly spray of droplets that Wolfpaw sent flying, "There's nothing wrong with disliking the water- especially whenever it's this cold. Some of RiverClan's greatest Warriors were drypaw's at first, and there's no shame in that fact." She finished, her gaze carefully training on both apprentices for a heartbeat as she spoke. 'Paws could always be so troublesome at this age. Giving her pelt a brisk shake, the Queen retreated several steps backwards and into the shelter of the brittle reeds that lined the frost-bitten bank. "Now, who is ready to try their paw at some hunting?" Splashwillow prompted, eager to distract Sweetpaw and Wolfpaw from their previous spat.

Sweetpaw straightened her fur with several quick licks, then stood tall and elegantly. "Yes, I am ready to be a mature apprentice and serve my Clan." She shot Wolfpaw a glare as she emphasized her sentence, then blinked sweetly at her mentor.

"Shut it you stupid mouse-brain! he hissed quietly at Sweetpaw looking at her with an angry look. Then her turned to his adoptive mother and nodded "Yeah Im ready, let's go he meowed.

The Queen's shoulders sagged slightly as she caught wind of Sweetpaw's glare and Wolfpaw's remark, but Splashwillow kept her face neutral as she slipped back into the reeds to guide the two apprentices away from the river once more. Did she have bickering to look forward to from Duskpaw, Snowpaw, and Minnowpaw as well? StarClan help me! Shaking her shoulders free of the pitiful amount of snow that the reeds had deposited upon her pelt, the calico felt relieved that it was a tad bit warmer inland.

"As you both know, RiverClan cats excel at water-based hunting- we always have. Whether it's fishing from the banks, or even hunting underwater, our Clan has always prided ourselves in just how gifted we are." Splashwillow began, a hint of pride evident in her words, as she guided Wolfpaw and Sweetpaw towards the towering outline of trees that marked the Beech Copse. "But come Leafbare, when the River freezes over, even the greatest of our hunters can find themselves struggling. So that's why we practice land-hunting; so that we have another alternative way to fill our bellies. But land-hunting is much more difficult than one would think." She warned, slipping beneath the barren branches of a scraggly fern bush and pushing her way into a small, secluded clearing that would make an excellent training ground. The Beech trees kept out the biting wind and kept the ground relatively clear of snow, and she knew that it would offer a variety of different creatures for the two apprentices to try their paw at hunting.

Turning to Wolfpaw and Sweetpaw, Splashwillow gave the two young cats an inquisitive glance, "Now, who is ready to begin?"

Sweetpaw sideglanced at Wolfpaw, then stepped out in front of him with her tail raised high. "I wish to try first please!"

He rolled his eyes and layed down in the snow looking at Sweetpaw "Fine whatever " he mumbled "Go and show everyone how great you are" he meowed, clearly annoyed at Sweetpaw. Then he mumbled quietly to himself "Sweetpaw huh? More like Annoyingpaw".

"Alright, Sweetpaw. The key to land-based hunting lays heavily in the categories of stealth and patience. RiverClan cats are nearly as quick on land as they are in the water, so we need to improvise; play to our natural strengths." Splashwillow explained, a forepaw reaching out to gently push Sweetpaw into a somewhat messy hunters crouch. It had been quite sometime since she had taught Lilypaw the tricks of land hunting, but hopefully her own skills weren't too rusty. The calico Queen gave Wolfpaw a quick warning glare to reprimand him into silence so that Sweetpaw's potential hunt. "Try your paw at flushing a creature out from the undergrowth around us- the Beech Copse always holds rodents during cold weather." Splashwillow quietly urged before stepping away from the young she-cat.

Sweetpaw nodded in understanding. As slowly and as quietly as she could, Sweetpaw stalked out towards the undergrowth. Suddenly she caught the strong scent of rodent, though she couldn't detect what kind it was. She carefully flanked the snowy bush her eyes were trained on until she was behind it. It was the perfect way to chase the prey out right into Splashwillow's paws.

She stalked closer and closer to the bush, until all of a sudden she let out a yowl of alarm, lifting up her forepaw. The rodent inside the bush was startled by the she-cat's sudden outburst and dashed out of its hiding place.

Wolfpaw looked up form where he was laying and looked at Sweetpaw "Ugh, stop yowling I wanna hunt to and it will be kinda hard without any prey" Wolfpaw meowed in annoyance. Then he sat up.

Splashwillow's ears twitched into an upright position as she intently watched Sweetpaw begin her first attempt at hunting. The calico she-cat remained still as stone as she continued to observe the young she-cat, carefully abstaining from making any noises that could possibly interfere with Sweetpaw's concentration. A wince was evident upon her face as the apprentice let out a startled yowl that sent a nearby crow hurtling into the air with a loud caw of alarm.

Splashwillow's tail softly collided with Wolfpaw's cheek at his snide comment, but her gaze remained trained upon Sweetpaw as she assessed the situation. "Try going after it!" The Queen hurriedly called in encouragement, her line of sight darting to the scuttling rodent.

Sweetpaw stared down in horror at her paw, which was covered in muddy slush, but her mentor's sudden call snapped her back into the task at hand. Spotting the rodent trying to run off, she pounded after it.

It quickly slipped into a hole in the snow before she could reach it. She slowed to a stop and looked up at Splashwillow guiltily, making a desperate attempt not to look at Wolfpaw. She then lifted up her muddied paw. "I-I'm sorry, I got mud on my paw and I got distracted..." She then made an effort to rub and wash her paw off in the snow.
