Like A Fish Out of Water [closed]

High above the ground, the thick branches of a nearby beech tree rattled quietly in the late Greenleaf breeze, bringing in the faint scents associated with the northern winds. The cold season would descend upon the Clans fairly soon at this rate and RiverClan would need all the Warriors they could get before then. Pausing beneath the shade of an ancient beech tree, Splashwillow settled herself comfortably on the gnarled roots as she patiently waited for Lilypaw to arrive for their designated training session.

Although this one would be a little bit different in comparison to what they normally learned- today's training session would revolve around learning to hunt on dry land. With Leafbare just around the corner, Lilypaw needed to learn how to handle hunting on land once the river froze up entirely.

Lilypaw had gone out of the camp and quickly headed to where Splashwillow told her to meet up. She came across the section of beech trees where Splashwillow was situated.

She walked up to her mentor with a smile. "Hey! What are we doing today?" she asked with enthusiasm. Lilypaw was always known to be happy and lively. She never let anything get her down. She waited for Splashwillow to instruct her on what she was to do.

Letting out a soft chirp of amusement and greeting, Splashwillow took a moment to appreciate the joyful look on her apprentice's face. It was nice to train with someone who matched her enthusiasm levels on a daily basis. She didn't know what she would do if she had gotten paired with some out of control prickly young kit. "Now that Leaffal is practically upon us, today we're going to learn perhaps one of the most difficult skills a RiverClan cat has to master- hunting on dry land." Splashwillow mewed, using her tail to gesture to the thick copse of beech trees that surrounded them. The thought of the river freezing during the coldest parts of the season made her fur prickle with something akin to both dread and excitement; it had been practically an eternity since she had last seen cooler weather. Snapping back to the present, the Warrior shimmied down from her seated position on the roots and took a step towards Lilypaw.

"Are you ready to begin?"

Lilypaw's eyes widened as Splashwillow explained what they were doing. She could feel the chilly air running through her thin white fur. She nodded with a smile. 'Hunting on dry land? This will be fun!' she thought to herself. "I'm ready." Lilypaw answered.

"Good." Splashwillow mewed shortly, a brisk smile twisting her little face as she backed away slightly from Lilypaw, giving the apprentice some room of her own as she began to work her way through the different stages of land hunting. "Take a deep breath- what do you smell?" The calico questioned shortly, an intent look on her face as she did so.

IC: Lilypaw turned up her nose and took a breath. Her face wrinkled at an odd smell. Although odd, it seemed somewhat familiar. She turned to Splashwillow with an unsure face. "I smell what I think is a...mouse?" The apprentice took another sniff just to back up her answer.

"Indeed it is." Splashwillow mewed softly, the woodsy scent of a nearby mouse evident in the air and on her tongue as she spoke. Her belly let out a soft growl at the scent of prey, but she didn't very much enjoy the tough meat of any sort of land-dwelling prey. "Go after it if you can." She instructed before slipping back several more paces as she waited for her apprentice to begin her first attempt at a land hunt.

IC: Lilypaw took a deep breath before she began to look for the small rodent. The sleek apprentice stopped dead in her tracks when she located the creature behind the smell. She crouched and began to stalk it. Once she was close enough, she pounced quickly. Her eyes widened when she was able to catch it. She rapidly took its life away and proudly brought it back to Splashwillow.

Patiently watching from a sizable distance, Splashwillow watched with perked ears and intent eyes as Lilypaw began to stalk the mouse. Ignoring the way her muscles twitched and urged her to go after the little woodland creature herself, she resigned to watch the little white she-cat go about her first woodland hunt. Her ears twitched eagerly as Lilypaw brought down the mouse and she found herself nodding contentedly as her apprentice made her way towards her. Although StarClan seemed to be favoring them thus far with this little hunting patrol, she knew that the cold season wouldn't be as forgiving, so all the more reason to practice while they could.

"Good job." Splashwillow purred, amber eyes gleaming in approval, before urging "See if you can bring in another piece of prey before we call it a day."

Lilypaw nodded. She scented the air for more prey. She went a little bit away and soon found a little bird, perched on a rock not too far from where she stood.

She crouched and began to stalk it. After a few heartbeats, she pounced on the bird. Lilypaw had got it just before it flew away. She brought it back to her mentor with her tail held high. This was very successful indeed.

The little knot of tension that had formed in Splashwillow's chest while she watched Lilypaw track the bird briefly tightened as she watched the white apprentice launch herself at the feathered creature, but as soon as she brought the bird down, the calico warrior let out a little breath of relief. StarClan truly was smiling down upon them! Perhaps they wouldn't go as hungry this Leaf-Bare. "Good job Lilypaw!" She called jovially, striding towards her apprentice with quick, bouncy steps. "Not very many apprentices can master land hunting as well as you have so far!" She praised, pausing in front of Lilypaw. "Let's grab that mouse of yours and head back to camp- you've definitely earned the best fish on the fresh-kill pile." Splashwillow promised with a hint of amusement in her amber eyes as she swept by Lilypaw before heading back towards camp.

Should Lilypaw get an assessment? She hasn't fought in any battles at all.
