Birdpaw's Assessment

Shadowleaf stood at the entrance of the camp waiting on her apprentice. She was going to do her assessment today and then maybe soon Birdpaw could become a warrior. Shadowleaf was honestly amazed. She wasn't too used to this process so she had a small swell of pride to be apart of the clan's system, and actually successfully train her own apprentice.

Birdpaw headed to the camp entrance at Shadowleaf's request. She was wondering what they were doing. She saw the she-cat sitting and waiting for her. As she neared, she gave her mentor a little nod. "Hello Shadowleaf! What are we doing today?" She asked the older she-cat.

"Today you are doing your assessment. I want you to go out into the territory and catch three pieces of prey by yourself." The gray and white she-cat instructed. "Remember I will be watching." She knew Birdpaw would do well. She didn't doubt her ability to pass one bit.

Birdpaw's eyes widened. Her assessement today? She looked at Shadowleaf and nodded to tell her that she understood. She hoped that she could catch all three without a problem. As her mentor led her out of camp, Birdpaw wondered how she would be observed.

They kept walking until the older she-cat stopped them. 'This is where it begins.' she mentally readied herself. Her mentor nodded and left a certain direction, now hidden by some bushes. Birdpaw began to concentrate her hearing in a certain direction. By the noise and the scent, she concluded it to be a common squirrel.

A couple of pawsteps later, she saw the fluffy creature carefully climbing down a tree in search for its meal. Birdpaw's eyes gleamed. 'Perfect.' she thought. She quietly observed it as it went farther away from its tree. It stopped at a little clearing and spotted a nut. It went to it and began to smell it. While the squirrel was preoccupied, the calico apprentice began to sneak towards it. She pounced before it turned around. Yes! It was caught. She bit it and swiftly killed it. She made sure to hide it in a place where no other predators could get it and where she could remember where it was.

She headed off in search of a different kind of prey.

Birdpaw reached another open area. She was about to step out from behind a bush that was hiding her when a robin landed on a root of a large tree. It moved to the center of the clearing in search for some bugs to eat. 'Uh oh let's see if I can catch it.' Birdpaw gave a silent sigh before sneaking around all the leaves and twigs.

She made it to a point where she can easily get it. Unfortunately it was facing her direction but luckily she was hidden in shadows. She waited for it to turn opposite of her. As it did she imediately pounced. It was startled and began to fly away but Birdpaw jumped to try and knock it out of the air.

She felt it as she batted the robin to the ground. It was dazed and as good as dead. She quickly killed it and hid the feathered creature before setting off to find her last piece of prey. 'Phew that was close.' she thought as she headed away from the clearing.

For Birdpaw's last piece of prey, she decided to go for something near her starting point. She stopped and listened. She heard a couple of squeaks coming from a mouse a couple tail-lengths away.

She crouched and searched for it. As she spotted it, the calico she-cat quietly snuck up on the rodent. She gave a grin before pouncing on it. As quickly as she caught it, she killed it. She hid her catch and went back to retrieve the others farther away.

She grabbed the robin, which was the furthest and hid it with the mouse. She went back and retrieved the squirrel. She uncovered all three of her prey and waited for Shadowleaf to come and tell her how she did. She sat and guarded her catches feeling proud of herself.

Shadowleaf appeared shortly after the third piece of prey was caught. "Good job Birdpaw. You have passed." The gray and white she cat shook out her fur. "Alright, let's go back to camp. I will talk to Blizzardstar." The warrior picked up one of the pieces of prey to make it easier on the apprentice to head back to camp.
