A "family" patrol?

Despite the chaos of the clans because of the mist, the sun was beginning to shine over Jaystream's life. With happy steps, the young warrior left his den, picked up some fishes quickly and trotted to the apprentice den. His green eyes searched for two special cats and he approached them, silent. With a soft nudge, the warrior woke his apprentice, purring."Good morning, Echopaw.
We are going on a hunting patrol. I left some fishes on the outside of the den so you can eat something before we leave."

Then, the tom watched the calico fur of his friend. He touched her gently with her tail, smiling shyly, as always. "Sorry for waking you up, Cinder, but do you want to come with me and Echopaw in a hunting patrol? I'm going to teach him how to hunt but I would love if you can join us." Without waiting for an answer, the gray tabby cat beckoned the entrance with his ears and padded to the exit, where he fastly ate one of three fishes he brought there. Laying on the ground, he waited for the two apprentices to come by his side so they could start a new day of training and bonding. Finally, he could get the chance to meet Echopaw, the cat that was now somehow the foster son of the she-cat with amber eyes.

Echoki-no Echopaw, looked at Jaystream emotionless. He turned away in silence, but then looked back at him awkwardly. "Err.. thanks," he muttered embarrassed. He took a few steps away. He flicked his eyes towards Cinderpaw. Something was up, he thought. His eyes narrowed at the gray tom. He shook his head slightly, and headed towards his fish.

Cinderpaw was fast asleep as Jaystream nudged her awake blinking she glanced over her shoulder at him but she didn't even had enough time to process what he said before he padded out. She yawned loudly stretching her legs out then shook her head, she spotted Echok- wait no Echopaw not too far away from her and everything came rushing back. A smile instantly formed on her face and she got to her paws, making her way out following Echopaw she blinked as the early morning light hit her. She saw the fish outside and blinked then she saw Jaystream and smiled at him shyly. "You didn't have to get one for me." But she didn't say anything else as she started eating the one fish before her fast. She smiled to Echopaw, "So how does it feel to be an apprentice now, Echopaw."

Echopaw shrugged. "I guess it's ok," he said, mouth full. He blinked at Jaystream. "I'm ready to go," he mewed. His intense yellow eyes held the tiniest flicker of excitement. He looked back at Cinderpaw, and cracked a smile at her.

Jaystream was surprised by the emotionless attitude of his new apprentice. Echopaw was different from any other apprentice in the clan. Usually, they were so excited because of their training and going outside the camp, but this tom... he was for sure a special cat.

Those thoughts soon disappeared when the she-cat left the den to meet them. He slightly blushed by her compliment and then waited for the two cats to finish. The warrior nodded to the youngest one, as he stood up to start approaching the exit of the camp. "Well, then. Let's go." He meowed walking along the calico she-cat and the dark furred tomcat.

It was strange, he thought for a moment. Cinderpaw had the age of a warrior, so she looked like one and being with him and a younger cat like Echopaw... it almost felt like they were really a family enjoying a trip. But the situation was different. Today Echopaw was going to be trained by him and he would learn how to hunt properly so Jaystream shouldn't forget that he was his mentor.

"We can start with something easy. Come with me to the less deep part of the river, Echopaw." He said to his apprentice as they arrived at the river of the clan. With long steps, the gray tabby cat felt the water around his paws and legs until he reached a place where fishes swam close enough to him. With a quick sign of his tail, he told Echopaw to stay quiet and still so he could show him how to properly catch a fish. The silver flash soon was on his left side and the warrior quickly dove his head into the water, catching the prey with his strong jaws. He threw it to the shore once it was dead and then looked back at the apprentice, smiling kindly. "Fishing is about being patient, silent and swift. These are our main source of food so you must learn how to hunt it properly. Go ahead and give it a try. I'm sure you'll do it great as long as you follow my lead." After saying that, the tom glanced at Cinderpaw with a friendly smile, hoping that she would join them in the hunting.

Cinderpaw blinked a bit at Echopaw, she couldn't tell if he was happy to be an apprentice or not. He certainly didn't show it but maybe he was like her and just shy. But as he looked back at her and she saw those eyes and that smile she realized he was trying to hide his excitement. He really was excited and thrilled to be an apprentice but he didn't want to show it to others. As she realized they were leaving she ate one last bite then got to her paws quickly.

She followed along with the other two but she glanced to Echopaw she slowed down to walk more alongside him and whispered, "You don't have to hide your excitement, you can be bouncing off the walls if you want. Don't hold yourself back."

Then she slowed down a bit more to try to get Echopaw and Jaystream to talk some more. He was properly unsure of Jay after all they have never met before. She doesn't want to hold Echopaw back or make him embarrassed.

She watched as Jaystream showed Echopaw how to fish with a smile on her face. They were like a family in a way. She even had tears in her eyes as she watched them. It seemed like just yesterday that it was just Jaystream and her being apprentices and Jay teaching her how to swim or to fish. He was an excellent teacher. And Echopaw needs somebody there to help him through everything, he needs somebody who was patient and calm to teach him. Really she wondered why Jaystream wanted her there but she didn't say anything on the matter. She noticed Jaystream's smile towards her and blinked away the tears quickly then titled her head, should she disturbed them? She wasn't sure so she still stayed back.

Echopaw stared at Cinderpaw, trying to work out what she was thinking. Cinderpaw's gentle whispers interrupted his thoughts. "Don't hold yourself back." He looked up at Jaystream, and then back at her. He could tell that Cinderpaw wanted Jaystream and him to interact with eachother. He shook his head slightly. Things don't work that way.

Echopaw silently watched his mentor wade through the shallow water, and skillfully catch a fish. His eyes widened as Jaystream offered him to try it. He nodded confidently, but a sharp fear jabbed at his stomache. He dipped a paw in the cool, clear water. He stepped in, the water chilling his whole body. "Silent, and swift." Jaystream's words echoed in his mind. A silver flashed caught the corner of his eye. He reached his paw to catch it, claws unsheathed and extended.

He felt the fish cling to his claws. "I got it!" He said triumphantly. He quickly realized that he had said it out loud, and flicked his tail in embarrassment. He stared down at his first fish, shining and glimmering with the water drops on it. For the first time, he smiled at his mentor. A true, happy smile.

The warrior was glad to see that the apprentice was a natural hunter as well as Ashfeather. He chuckled, proudly from him when he talked with such an energy and excitement that he didn't show it before. It was nice to see that finally, Echopaw was opening to him a bit and that now he show his true feelings. "Yes, you did. That was a perfect first try and I couldn't do it better, Echopaw. Now, why don't you show Cinderpaw the fish you caught and invite her to see you closer? I'm sure she would like to see how you hunt another one." He purred, looking to the calico she-cat from the corner of his green eyes. She still stayed right on the shore, maybe because she thought that he could interrupt Echopaw's training. However, Jaystream believed that with her around him, he could do it even better since he would try to impress or show how good he was as a hunter.

"Go ahead and leave the fish on the shore, next to mine, and tell Cinderpaw to come here with us so you can catch another one." He pointed the place where the she-cat was with his eyes and a flicker of his tail, encouraging Echpaw to go so she could see how happy he was.

Cinderpaw hoped on her paws as she saw Echopaw managed to grab a fish. She yelled out, "Congrats Echo! Your a pro at this!!" Her eyes sparkled as she saw how happy Echopaw was, the glimmer in his eyes and his true smile made her heart burst. She purred at the top of her lungs as she bounced on her paws, not a lot of cats has seen her this happy before. But once she saw Jaystream mumble something to Echopaw her head titled in question. What could they be talking about? She saw Jaystream's tail flicked her direction and even was more confused. Why would they be talking about her for?

Echopaw beamed in pride as his mentor and Cinderpaw praised him. His eyes shone with amusement at Cinderpaw's extremely happy demeanor. He nodded to Jaystream's directions and looked over at Cinderpaw, her head tilted a bit. He smiled at her and bounded over, fish in mouth. "Did you see? Did you see? I caught it!" He was a bit surprised by his attitude. He pressed his cheek to hers in delight and scrambled to put his prized fish next to Jaystream's. He hurried back over to Cinderpaw, slightly winded. "Come over, because I'm gonna catch another!" He breathed. He then turned back to Jaystream and flicked his tail.

The warrior's tail flicked as he smiled to the tow apprentices with a glad smile. Jaystream saw how close Echopaw had become to Cinderpaw in a way that it was almost like an older sister or his mother. The young kitten was so excited that his happiness was contagious.

Once he came back, the older tom nodded to his apprentice, happily. "Well? What are you waiting for? Go ahead and show her the good hunter you are. Soon you will be hunting a lot of different preys that would feed our clan. But first, try to catch another fish and we can continue to the next and last lesson of today, all right?" He purred, beckoning the river with a movement of his fluffy tail. The warrior waited in the least deep part of the river, sitting and waiting for Cinderpaw to come close to both of them.

Echopaw nodded, splashing back into the crystal water. A silver flash caught his eye. He agilely leaped while turning, feeling his claws extend instinctively. He landed with a flurry of water drops sparkling the sky like stars. His claws pierced the shiny silver scales of his prey. He glanced back at Jaystream and Cinderpaw to make sure they were watching. He stepped out of the water gracefully, dropping his fish to groom his fur. He then set his fish next to his last catch, thankful that he was finally making a difference in the clan. Helping feed the weak and strong alike. The thought of it made him twitch his tail in happiness. He strutted back to his mentor and adopted mother proudly.
