Dawnpaw's Assessment

The camp was heavily bathed in the cool, dark shadows of the weak morning light as Brindlewhisker picked her way towards Dawnpaw's sleeping form, tail lightly whisking in excitement. Her first son- a Warrior already! Normally most assessments were held later in the day, but she had specifically chosen to set her son's assessment early in the morning to avoid keeping him out in the harsh heat of Greenleaf for longer than she had to. Once she reached Dawnpaw's sleeping form, Brindlewhisker reached out to gently prod her son's sleeping form before softly murmuring, "Dawnpaw, wake up- it's time."

"Time for wh- OH!" he said, at first sleepy, but then with realization of what she meant. Dawnpaw instantly jolted awake and was ready to go.

A little purr of amusement escaped Brindlewhisker's mouth at Dawnpaw's reaction and the Deputy quickly leaned down to press a brief good-morning nuzzle to her sons cheek before she turned to guide them out of the sleep-riddled camp and out onto the open moor. Early morning dew clung heavily to the various grasses that dotted their path and she soon found herself effectively soaked as they trekked deeper into the heart of the territory.

"Just because I'm your mother doesn't mean I'll go easy on you." Brindlewhisker eventually warned, a teasing tone evident in her voice, as she slowly halted. Turning to face Dawnpaw, she gave him an expectant stare as she ran through the various options of the assessment she could set her son to. "I want to you bring me four pieces of prey- two of them being rabbits, the other two can be prey of your choosing. You have until sundown to complete the assessment." Brindlewhisker stated, slipping away from her son and into a clump of heather, "Remember that I'll be watching your progression." She informed before vanishing out of view.

Oh goodness. Dawnpaw gulped. She'd be watching him? What if he messed up. He decided to go ahead and track a rabbit.

Pouncing on the rabbit and delivering the killing bite, Dawnpaw ran after the terrified other hare that had been nibbling on the grass with his kill.

Mouse dung! The rabbit narrowly escaped into the safety of a burrow. Dawnpaw sighed and circled around to another burrow entrance that he was downwind of. Hopefully, there'd be another rabbit..

With two rabbits killed and strategically hidden for later pick-up, Dawnpaw tasted the air for birds. Spotting a group of them pecking at a clump of heather, he prepared to pounce.

As soon as Dawnpaw killed one of the birds in the group, he turned and attempted to pull another out of the sky.

However, the birds were all scared off. Dawnpaw cursed at his mistake and leaped desperately into the air to try and snag a lower one.
