Ashpaw's assesment

Today was an important day for Ashpaw and the older tom was ready to test her hunting abilities and skills. Jaystream was waiting in the entrance of the camp with a fish in front of his paws. He already ate and the prey was there for his apprentice who would need all her energy for this day. If she succeeded, she would be a warrior in no time. With a flicking tail, his green eyes searched for the young she-cat so they could start early.

Ashpaw saw her mentor sitting at the camp entrance and she raced over. She knew what this was. She had been an apprentice long enough. Abmillion thoughts flew through her head. Would she pass? Would she fail? What might her warrior name be? Ashleap? Ashwillow? Ashsong? She was so excited to get started. "Jaystream," she panted, "is it time for my assessment?"

Jaystream nodded and pushed the fish toward the young she-cat. "Yes. I assume that you might be excited and nervous about it but don't worry. I'm sure you will make it if you have all your energy with you. Eat something and follow me. We are going to hunt near to the river." He meowed, showing her the prey and then turning his head back to the Riverclan territory. The tom stood up, waiting for Ashpaw to finish, and then trotted to the place where the apprentice would have her assesment.

Ashpaw quickly gulped down the fish and followed her mentor to the river. She was practically leaping with joy. She would be a warrior soon! Stopping as her mentor was, she asked, "So...what do I have to do?"

"For your assesment you are going to catch 2 fishes and 2 land prey. You can chose which kind of land prey do you want and the order of your hunting. You will have until the sun reaches our heads. I'll be close, watching your progress and technique. Good luck!" He purred before trotting to a groups of reeds to hide and laid down, his green eyes always looking at the she-cat.

Ashpaw decided to hopefully build confidence first. Going to the river, she waded in, then saw a flash of silver. Snapping it up, she killed in and threw it on the shore, burying it for later.

The warrior looked from the reeds the first catch of his apprentice and nodded, showing how proud he was about the young she-cat that had improved so much. She would probably catch the other three prey in less time than he thought and Jaystream soon would see her as a warrior.

Feeling pleased with herself, she decided to try her luck on land. Scenting a a frog, she followed the scent, then leaped on top of it. Thrilled she saw the animal struggling in her paws, and instantly dealt a blow to it's head. Burying it, she held her head high, searching for more prey.

Well done he thought after the clean kill of the frog. Ashpaw was showing exceptional hunting skills in land and water. The warrior moved his tail, interested about seeing the next catch of the she-cat.

Ashpaw could feel her blood pumping as she went back to the river. She could already imagine her ceremony...what would her name be? When would she get an apprentice? Thoughts zooming through her head, she waded back into the river. The silver flashed, and she scooped it up, biting and burying it on land.

Just one more, Ashpaw... Jaystream thought with a peaceful smile. He stretched his paws without making a noise and wait for the last hunt of the apprentice.

Ashpaw looked around on land, then spotted a creature she assumed was called a bird. Stalking up on it like any other creature, she leaped onto it. It fluttered away, leaving her with a mouth full of feathers. Spitting them out, she walked on.
