Venompaw's Assessment (closed)

Sitting near the camp entrance, Mudfoot waited for Venompaw in silence. The sun was beginning to set and the slightly chilly night air was settling across the forest, sending a shiver up his spine. Tonight, he would assess one of his few apprentices and he was confident that she would do great.

Venompaw trotted out of the apprentice den, a confident smirk painted on her features and her tail raised high. The moon glittered in the sky, along with all the stars in Starclan, and the crisp night breeze rushed through her fur. For others, it would have been less than ideal, but it brought her to life. At night, everything seemed so much more peaceful, so much simpler, and she reveled in the feeling.

Approaching her mentor, satisfaction and general pleasure making her movements light, she smiled. Usual her smiles were cold and cruel, but not this time. Slightly unusual, but understandable. If she passed this test, she'd ean her place as a full warrior of the clan
"I'm ready. We're we going?"

Giving a curt nod to the apprentice, Mudfoot stood up and padded towards the entrance but stopped and waited for Venompaw. "Lead the way," he meowed with a smile. When conducting assessments, it was always good to let the apprentice take charge of the patrol since they'd need that skill in the future.

Venompaw watched her mentor step back, confusion filling her gaze for a second before she realised what he was doing. She'd seen other apprentices take their assessments and they always lead, and it made sense, it taught them the skill of leadership. Nodding uncertainly, the first hints of nervousness filling her gaze. She padded out of camp, and took a few seconds to scan her surroundings. She supposed the hunting ground would depend on what she had to catch. As she padded through the marshy undergrowth that had long since become familiar to her, she asked Mudfoot
"What do you want me to catch?"

Following the younger she-cat, he was glad that she'd asked just what he was about to tell her. Great minds sure did think alike. "Catch a couple frogs, then we'll see how you're doing," Mudfoot meowed with a smile and sat down, waiting for Venompaw to start the hunt.

Frogs? Venompaw felt her heart sink to her knees. Of course, frogs were common in the marshy Shadowclan territory, she just wasn't that great at catching them. She cast a quick glance to her mentor and then realised 'but he knows that, that's why he set this task for me'. She nodded, determination pushing her foreward. She'd show her worth, she'd earn her place in the clan and complete her assessment fair and square.

She raised her nose to the hair and, pushing away the scents of rodents and birds, she focused on the oily and muddy scent of frog. It didn't take her long to find a recent trail, leading down to a patch of tall grass. Following it carefully, she did her best not to make a single noise, made difficult by the muddy ground sucking at her paws. But she'd trained for this for moons, she knew how to keep silent.

She leaped, and felt the creatures blood run in between her claws. Ending it with a swift bite to the neck, she smiled with satisfaction. She'd cot one, she just had to catch a few more. Picking up the small creature, she trotted back over to her mentor and sat it at his feet
"How many would you like? Another two?" Her tone was, admittedly, slightly cocky but she was pleased with herself

Watching the apprentice from a little ways away, the tom was glad that she was able to catch something and trotted over to her. "Good job, and yes, catch another frog," he mewed with a smile and waited for Venompaw to get going again.

Venompaw, eyes flaring with confidence after her successful kill, raised her nose to the air once again and soon tracked down another frog. They were everywhere in the territory. Following the trail easily, she found herself at a particularly marshy patch of the territory, and did her best not to groan at the wetness surrounding her paws. She loved the solitude of the marshes, but couldn't stand the constant state of dampness. The frog she'd tracked was only a few steps away so, easily blending into her dark surroundings, even her green eyes melting into the shrubs.

Yet despite her best efforts, as she leaped the slippery surface of the small frog slipped between her paws, her claws extending into thin air as the small green frog hopped away into the marsh

Following the apprentice and making sure stay as quiet as possible, Mudfoot stayed a good distance from Venompaw as she spotted another frog but lost it. Besides the fact that she’d just unsuccessfully caught a piece of prey, she was doing very good with her tracking skills, and hopefully she’d find another frog to catch.

Venompaw's failure had only made her more determined to do it right this time. She'd caught the first with no problems at all, and this had just barely slipped away from her. She didn't believe in luck or fate, and even her belief in Starclan was wavering after everything that had happened. From Wolffang, to Sleetfang, everything seemed to awful to be the will of their ancestors.
But no, this was a hunt, so she'd keep focused. Tracking down another trail, frogs were all over the place due to the marshy conditions right as the forest was pulled out of it's leafbare slumber, she followed it to a relatively dry patch not too far away. She'd have it this time, she had to.
Stalking through the grass and marsh, her black coat melting into the shadows around her, she leaped. With a satisfying rush of blood in between her claws, she felt the life slowly drain from the creature she had pinned beneath her paws. Cutting it's slow death short, she picked it up in her jaws and raised it up. She knew Mudfoot would be watching her, and although she could have tracked him if she wanted to, she knew it was unnecessary. Putting it down at her paws once again, she called
"I've done it!"

Standing back and continuing to watch the apprentice hunt, Mudfoot let out a meow of amusement when she caught the frog. "Good job!" he exclaimed while trotting over to Venompaw. "I'd say that about sums up your assessment, you'll be a warrior in no time," Mudfoot chuckled. Flicking his tail in the direction of camp, the tom started to make his way back home, knowing the apprentice would catch up.

Venompaw's eyes lit up. That was it. She was going to be a warrior. Rushing back to where she'd left the other frog, she picked both up and bounded after her soon-to-be-former mentor. After everything, all her setbacks and struggles, she was finally going to be a warrior.
For the first time in moons, kit-like joy lit up her expression as she padded along beside her mentor, more than happy to return to camp and tell others of her success.
