A patrol for Venompaw (close)

Padding into the apprentice den, Mudfoot found Venompaw's pelt among the other bundles of sleeping cats and gently prodded the apprentice's side. "Venompaw, wake up," the tom meowed softly. Tonight, he'd take the apprentice on a patrol and hopefully they'd be able to get patrol most of the borders and get some hunting done as well.

Venompaw, not a particularly heavy sleeper, sat up abruptly and blinked at the tom. Confusion swept across her features as well as slight irritation, but she kept polite as she said
"Why're you waking me up this late? I'm trying to sleep you know" her amber eyes gleamed in the small amount of moonlight pushing it's way through the leaves, and despite her words there was eagerness behind the glare.

It'd been a while since she'd done any patrols or training, so long in fact that she'd forgotten that she had duties as well. She'd spent a long time just sitting in her den, picking fights with other cats and then watching as the drama of Shadowclan happened around her. Still, that didn't mean she was out of practise. In fact, she'd spent a lot of the time training by herself at the edge of camp. Flicking her ear in frustration, she waited for Mudfoot to tell her what they were doing, she figured he was waking her up for training of some kind

Exiting the apprentice den with his apprentice not far behind, Mudfoot made his way over to the camp entrance. "We're going to go on a patrol," he mewed in reply, looking to the apprentice. Turning around, the warrior padded out of the camp and into the marshy territory. "Let's patrol the Thunderpath border before anything else," Mudfoot spoke as the two made their way through the territory. Although he usually loved training apprentices, after recent events that had been happening, his mood wasn't the greatest, and so the russet colored tom was a bit quieter than usual.

Venompaw nodded, trotting after him and surveying the surrounding area. Everything seemed to be in order, and when she raised her nose to scent the air, all she could smell was the bitter cold breeze and faint scent of mouse, but it hadn't been here for hours. Casting a quick glance at her mentor, she frowned. He was acting strange and she wasn't certain she liked it. When cats acted differently than usual, she couldn't predict what they would do. Well, that and the fact that she held some level of affection for her mentor.
"Mudfoot... are you alright? You're quieter than usual" her gaze flickered with concern but she did her best to look nonchalant

Making their way through the territory and nearing the Thunderpath, Mudfoot perked his ears at the apprentice's question. He was acting odd? "Oh, I'm sorry," he started softly, a small smile growing on his muzzle. "I'm just a bit tired and overwhelmed, that's all," the warrior added as the two cats reached the Thunderpath.

"Alright, so what do you know about this place?" Mudfoot asked Venompaw, trying to seem more cheerful and awake. He hated worrying his clanmates, especially apprentices, seeing that they were still young and didn't need the troubles of the world on their shoulders as well.

Venompaw nodded, satisfied with his answer, before glancing around at where they were. The Thunderpath. Thinking for a few moments, she said confidently
"It's where the the monsters run, and we shouldn't cross it in case they hurt us. It's the Shadowclan and Thunderclan border, that's Thunderclan territory over there," she pointed with her paw before wrinkling up her nose slightly, even though she was still trying to look some level of dignified "And it smells awful"


She knew a lot about the territories by this point, and was happy to tell her mentor all she knew, hoping it would distract him from his stress, although mostly just because she liked showing her capabilities as a member of the clan

Nodding as the apprentice spoke, Mudfoot was impressed by the apprentice's level of knowledge and assumed it was from already having been trained before. "Good job!" the warrior exclaimed. "How about we do some hunting an head back to camp?" the tom asked with a smile, his spirits lifting at the thought of hunting. Turning around, the warrior started padding towards the center of the territory, ready to start hunting.

Venompaw nodded, a light glinting in her eyes at the thought of digging her claws into prey will it was still alive and wriggling. She did, admittedly, get a rush of satisfaction every time she felt blood well up between her claws, but of course wouldn't say it allowed. She loved the rush of stalking the prey from the shadows, unseen and unheard until it was too late. Trotting after her mentor, she lifted her nose to the air
"Um, Mudfoot, I think I smell a mouse. I mean, I'm not sure but I think so" She shrugged, admittedly still slightly uncertain and she didn't want to act too confident only to find out she was wrong. Better to play it safe. She was, however, almost certain that's what she scented and exactly where it was but, once again, was playing it safe in case she was wrong

Padding next to Venompaw, Mudfoot lifted his head and slightly opened his jaw when she mentioned prey. And to his surprise, she most certainly right about the mouse.

"There is definitely prey around, but, simply talking about it isn't going to catch it. How about you see if you can scent it out and hunt it down? I'll follow right behind you, just in case," the warrior whispered, a reassuring smile on his muzzle. As much as he wanted to help her out, she needed to be able to find prey on her own, and he had confidence in her ability to track down the mouse that was somewhere in the area. Flicking his tail in the direction that the prey was most likely in, he waited for the apprentice to start hunting.

Ooc: Are we using the hunting system? Just checking, figure we probably won't because it's not her assessment. I'll roll anyway but if we aren't then we can just ignore it


IC: Venompaw nodded, determination in her eyes. She'd show him what she could do. Lifting her nose to the air once more, she slowly padded through the brush to her right, crouching as she drew closer to the source of the scent. There, at the base of the rock a few steps in front of her. The little nose sniffed at the base of the rock, apparently looking for something


She was silent as she leaped, landing like a shadow and killing it with a swift bite to the back of the neck, feeling the satisfying limpness as the blood drained out of it's small body. Picking it up gently, so as not to crush it, she showed Mudfoot arrogantly, an 'I told you I could do it' smirk on her face.

IC: Waiting for Venompaw to return from hunting the prey that she'd scented out, Mudfoot was surprised in how quickly she trotted back over to him, a grin on her face. "Good job," the tom mewed with a smile. "How about you try hunting a little more and then we'll head back to camp," the warrior added.

OOC: Nah, I really don't so thanks. And don't worry about it

IC: Venompaw nodded, stashing the prey under a tree not too far away to collect later. Scenting the air once more, she was fairly certain that a toad wasn't too far away. Trotting in the direction, she stopped as she drew close. She'd never been so good at toads, they were always too slippery and fast, and always slipped out of her grip, their slimy bodies not great for clinging onto. She crouched, padding lightly over the pine needles without much difficulty, not allowing a single one to snap. As her claws extended, she leaped and grasped hold of the small green creature, and was bending don to bite into it's throat when it wriggled away, flicking her in the face with slime as it went
"Mouse-dung! I had it for crying out loud! I had that!" she wiped her face with her paw in frustration, flicking her ear.

OOC: apologies for the wait.

IC: Watching the apprentice as she attempted to catch a toad, Mudfoot let out a meow of amusement when she leaped towards it and missed. "It's alright, not everyone is a born natural at hunting. It just takes time and practice," he chuckled, trotting over to Venompaw. While she was probably disappointed with the results of this particular hunt, he knew that she would be a great hunter in no time. "Well, let's head back to camp now so you can show the younger apprentices your catch," the warrior added and started to head back in the direction on the camp.

Ic: Venompaw nodded, a slight scowl on her face as she picked up her mouse from earlier. She knew she was better than that, she knew she could do better.

She padded along next to her mentor, the glare still written all over her features. She was a great hunter, she'd prove it. Dropping the mouse to the ground she suddenly vanished into the shadows, her paw steps growing quieter as the scent of something else. A lizard? Maybe. But she ignored it, heading in a different direction instead. It was too common, too easy to catch, she' been able to kill lizards as a kit. Admittedly, a bit messily and with a lot of difficulty, but she could still do it. She lifted her nose to the air once again, this time the scent of a squirrel drifted to her. Strange, they weren't usually in Shadowclan territory. It must have wandered in from the Thunderpath. Trailing it's scent, a grin crossed her features as she saw it scrabbling at a tree a little distance away. Creeping forward, she leaped

Venompaw pushed past another bush and got back to where she'd abandoned her mentor and her dead mouse, with a squirrel and a vole hanging from her jaws. The rodent had crossed her oath on her way back so she swiped it up on the way, admittedly with a little difficulty because of the squirrel but well worth the struggle. Laying them on the floor so she could speak, she raised her head and looked her mentor in the eye as she said arrogantly, with an undeniable confidence
"As a matter of fact, I am a natural born hunter and I've had all the practise I need" before picking up her prey, including the mouse, and trotting in the direction of camp once more
