The Seven Deadly Sins

I wrote my first serious poem! Any other poem I've ever written was something stupid I wrote about my dogs or a flower or something. xD Welp. I'm actually an atheist, so this poem was a little bit out of my area, but I thought I'd do my best. Enjoy!

Lust
A primal instinct
A passionate flame
Lust for power
Lust for attention
Lust for fame
A white van
An innocent man
A girl snatched away for years
The ones most consumed by their lust
Could be the ones you most dearly trust

Gluttony
The privileged stuff their faces
5% of the world’s population generating 30% of the world’s waste
Reduce, reuse, recycle? Hah, those words aren’t part of their vocabulary
They pass by the less fortunate, thinking
“Glad that’s not me” and move on without a second thought
Some are given more than they could want, never lifting a finger
While others work their hardest for everything they have
Tell me, how is that fair?

Greed
Money
It’s one of the first words children understand
It dictates our life, determining every second of our future
20% of Americans own 85% of the country’s wealth
That’s a staggering statistic
They say money is the root of all evil
And you know what?
I think they’re right
What wouldn’t someone do for a million dollars?
Such a flimsy piece of paper
Holds so much power
Imagine what the world would be like
If we didn’t fight over such a thing?

Sloth
Sitting, glued to your chair
Eyes staring at the glowing screen
You hear of mass murders, genocide, starvation
The world would be better without it, don’t you think?
But tell me, what have you done that has actually made a change?
Our world is dying, crumbling down around us
But we’re too blind to see the clues
Too deaf to hear the screams of the Earth beneath our feet
We’re too scared, no, too lazy to do anything about it

Wrath
War. Bombs. Guns. Death.
A never ending cycle
How many lives have to be sacrificed
How many children have to lose their family
Before we learn our lesson?
How many times have we heard the phrase
“Violence never solves anything”?
But it falls upon deaf ears
Genocide after genocide
Dictator after dictator
Will we only be satisfied
When blood runs thick in rivers?
And there are no more lives to spare?

Envy
We’ve all felt it
That jealousness
They have something you want
Whether it be an item, or a friend’s attention
A mind full of
“Why can’t I have this?”
And
“Why can’t I have that?”
Why is it so hard to focus on the good things?
Forget what you don’t have
And cherish what you do have
You’ll be surprised how your quality of life improves

Pride
In little doses
It’s not so bad
But when you become addicted, that’s the issue
Too proud to admit you’re wrong
Too proud to back down
Even when you know you’re wrong
Even when you’ve lost
Your ego grows out of control
Pushing everyone away
At first you’re the king
The best of them all
But after a while
You realize you’re alone
What’s the point in being the best
If there’s no one around to care?

Seven Sins
Called deadly for a reason
They’re all around us
Poisoning our lives
No matter how much you deny it
You’ve personally felt each and every one
There is no treatment
There is no cure
They’re what makes us human
