The Little One is an Explorer

Marigoldkit blinked open her amber eyes, dark shapes slowly coming into focus. It was dawn, and the cool night air nipped at her nose. Her sister, Lilykit, lay asleep next to her, but they were alone in the nest. The other occupants of the nursery were silent as a mouse, still sleeping as well. Marigoldkit rolled out of the nest, landing on her back with a small 'oof'. She scrambled back to her paws, wobbling over to the nursery's opening. In the few days she had been alive, not once had she thought of leaving the nursery's safe walls. What lay outside of this safe haven? She just had to find out.
Placing her nose outside first, freezing wind met her with a brutal nip. Used to the relative warmth of the nursery, the newleaf chill was enough to send shivers down the kit's spine. She slowly worked up the courage to take a step outside, telling herself that she could always go right back into the nursery if she wanted to. With a sudden burst of courage, she leaped forwards into the clearing. Nothing happened, but her heart was beating quickly. She had expected some terrible monster to leap at her, so where was the surprise?
Once Marigoldkit had gotten over her fright, she started to look around. The ground was hard and rocky, and there seemed to be dens everywhere. The only other den she knew of was the apprentice's den, where Jaypaw slept, so what were all these other dens? Were there cats sleeping in them? Her question was answered as she observed a cat step out of one. She watched as the older cat walked over to a small group of others that Marigoldkit hadn't noticed before. Now that she thought about it, there were many cats quietly going about their business. More and more seemed to be appearing as the camp grew lighter and lighter, the sun climbing in the sky.
A shadow approached Marigoldkit, but who was it? The kit turned to face the cat just as they were about to speak.

The shadow turned out to be Jaypaw "What are you doing outside the nursery so early?" he mewed, touching noses with her playfully "You're not an apprentice already are you?" he joked.

Marigoldkit's amber eyes lit up when she saw it was Jaypaw. A smile danced on her muzzle as the apprentice greeted her. She shook her head gently, touching her nose to his eagerly. A purr arose in her throat as she wove around Jaypaw's legs, looking up at him with wide and innocent eyes.

Jaypaw laughed "I can feel like you'll be a trouble maker" he purred his whiskers twitched with amusement as he swayed his tail back and forth.

Lilykit stirred in her nest, not willing to get up at all. She rolled her body to use Marigoldkit as a tiny teddy bear, only to find that she wasn't there! She mewed in annoyance and scrabbled out of the den, shaking her head to rid her fur of dirt and moss. She spotted her sister and began sneaking closer behind her. She prayed that Jaypaw wouldn't notice her scent and warn her sister. She sprang onto Marigoldkit, sending them both sprawling to the dirt. "Oh, sweet Marigoldkit... You poor, innocent youngling..." she spoke dramatically as she held the other kit pinned to the ground. "It seems that I've bested you! You never even saw it coming, you poowr wittle bubby," she cooed, giggling as she stepped off her sibling. "Just teasin', you know the drill!"

Jaypaw nodded "Good move Lilykit" he turned over to Marigoldkit "Now what are you going to do back, are you going to surprise her, are you going to trip her?" he moved circled them slowly.

Marigoldkit let out a small mew of surprise as she was thrown suddenly to the ground. As soon as Lilykit got off her, she sprung after her sister, knocking her to the ground in nearly the exact same manner. She giggled playfully, tickling her sister's belly. "This is what she gets for surprise attacking me!" She thought.

Lilykit nearly screamed with the effort to stop laughing. She started breathing unevenly and her big brown eyes watered. She batted Marigoldkit's ginger paws away before getting up and tumbling into Jaypaw. "Oh my StarClan, Marigoldkit! You can't do that to me! You'll kiiiill me!" she moaned, still catching her shortened breath.

Jaypaw laughed and nudged Lilykit to help her get back on her feet.

Marigoldkit fell onto her back, choked with laughter. Her eyes were watering because she was laughing so hard. She was so glad she had come out of the nursery. She never knew how fun it was out here!

Jaypaw joined in and nuzzled her, tickling her and licked her face to make sure she wouldn't be able to see him and stop him from tickling her.

Marigold kit bent down, wiggling her hind quarters. Suddenly she leaped at Jaypaw, attacking his fluffy tail.

Jaypaw purred and turned, he batted at her head.

Marigoldkit mewled happily, prancing around Jaypaw and getting under his paws.

Jaypaw laughed "Oh you!" he picked her up "Your going to get a good taste of Jaypaw!" he began to run around in a circle around camp as the wind blew against his fur.
