ThunderClan? Troutstep let out a low growl, looking around to see if anyone was still around but soon looked back at his mate. "Hey, you're going to be okay, ya hear? I'll take you back to camp." He choked out the words. "We'll go to gatherings together, watch our kits grow up, okay?" He tried to stay optimistic, but couldn't help think... No. She would live. Troutstep would take care of her, never leave her side again.

"T...Troutstep...?" She asked weakly, chest heaving. She knew she couldn't make it, but she wanted to be with her mate. She wanted to live. For him. For their kits, her family...

A tear or two dropped from the tom's eyes. "Heronwing..." He was finally happy, probably the most happy he'd ever been and now, his mate was being taken away from him? Why! Why did everything bad happen to him? Couldn't life just be normal?

"P... Promise me... You'll take care... of my kits, and m... My family..." She coughed, smiling just a bit. "And... Make sure... They know... Thund-Thunderclan did this..." She said, a blaze in her eyes as her life faded. "I love you..." Her eyes glazed over and her spirit left for Starclan as her life was coughed out of her, forever.

"No. Heronwing, no, stay awake." Troutstep meowed, licking her cheek. "No!" He screeched into the empty air, sending birds fluttering out of a tree. Tears flooded out of the tom's eyes as he rested his head on Heronwing's shoulder, curling his tail around his mate. "I promise. ThunderClan won't get away with this." Troutstep's eyes turned dull, his heart empty as ever. he knew he should be there for his kits, but nothing mattered anymore. Like a swan losing its mate, Troutstep would grieve every waking minute.
