Goldenpaw's Assessment

Lightfoot sat just outside the gorse tunnel early in the morning. The sun had only just peered over the distant east lands. With the cold weather fast approaching, the Clan needed to be equipped with hunters good enough to catch the moorland prey that would soon be dwindling for leafbare. It was his job to make sure his apprentice was up to it, and it was about time that Goldenpaw was tested. If she passed, it was very likely that she would become a warrior in the following sunrises. He himself felt excited at the thought. That will be my second successful apprentice. He though eagerly, waiting for the she-cat whom he had just prodded awake only moments before.

Goldenpaw groggily padded over to Lightfoot and stretched.
"Alright, I'm ready," Goldenpaw mewed and looked at her mentor.

He nodded at the she-cat, standing to his paws and arching his own back. "Good morning." He said pleasantly. "Your training has been going wonderfully, and I believe it's time for an assessment. From now until sunhigh, you must hunt in the moorlands and catch at least three pieces of prey to pass. I know it's getting colder and prey scarcer, but that just proves how good of a hunter I know you are, especially now that your paw has healed nicely. I'll be following, but just act like I'm not there." He meowed, flicking his tail at the territory in a silent command to begin.

Goldenpaw nodded as she listened to her mentor's explanation.
"Got it," she mewed and bounded into the moors. Her golden fur blended well with the grass. She looked around with ears perked and mouth open. She inhaled all the scents around her. This was sure going to be hard. The apprentice slipped through heather and grass quickly like a snake. Finally after many, many moments of searching she picked up the scent of a rabbit. It was fresh. She followed the scent until she saw a small rabbit chewing on some grass. It looked young but it was good enough. Goldenpaw struck forward and snatched the rabbit by the head. She snapped it's neck and the rabbit went limp under her paws. Goldenpaw frowned. The rabbit didn't try to run or fight, oh well easy prey! Goldenpaw buried her catch and set off again to find some more.

Lightfoot followed, but at quite the distance. He always had to take extra steps not to be in the way of a cat taking an assessment. He crested a hill, finding a good vantage point to watch without disturbing Goldenpaw. He smiled at her success, his tail absently flicking. This would be a breeze to Goldenpaw, who would pass this assessment with ease.

Goldenpaw's paws pounded the ground as she raced after a larger rabbit. It was old so Goldenpaw was able to outrun it and snag it. She put it out of it's misery and gave a silent thanks to Starclan for the catch. Two down, one to go. Goldenpaw sniffed out another piece of prey. She scented another rabbit. It was very small and skinny when she saw it. The rabbit perked up as she sneaked forward. Goldenpaw took that as her final chance and she used her long legs to propel herself forward and onto the rabbit. The poor rabbit couldn't do anything until Goldenpaw killed it.

A smile spread across his face. He hurried down the hill, his long legs stretching out before him, reaching Goldenpaw in a few heartbeats. "Ah, well done!" He meowed, his head tilting to the side. "I believe that will be enough. Fetch your prey, and I'll have a word with Falconstar when we get back to camp."
