Waking up in the nursery

Shimmerlight woke up in the nursery. She had been dreaming about Drift and Mist. She could see the sun was already up by peeking through the entrance. She padded back over to her kits and curled up next to them. She knew that Streamkit and Hazekit were tired from the night before, when she took the to Drift to name them and to let him choose which kit he wanted, but she wasn't sure about Brookkit and Palekit. When Shimmerlight came back with Streamkit and Hazekit that night, she had told everyone the lie she had made up; The three kits ran off together and Mist (she called her Mistkit) was missing. She didn't tell anyone that drift had Mist, and she assumed that Icetail had figured it out, but she wanted to tell her anyway. Shimmerlight had to watch her kits, so she didn't feel like finding her friend.

Streamkit stretched and rolled over onto her back. She blinked open her eyes and looked around, confused. The last thing she remembered was falling asleep outside of camp when her mother was talking to a smelly cat. Streamkit got up, yawning. One of her sisters was missing. It was...Mistkit. "Momma," she said softly as she tugged on Shimmerlight's ear. "Momma, where is Mistkit?" She asked.

Shimmerlight licked Streamkit. "Don't worry about that, hun. She is alright. You might not see her for a while, but she is okay, I promise. Why don't you go and play? See if one of your sisters want to." 

Streamkit nodded and padded over to Brookkit and tapped her with a paw. "Hey, wanna play?" She asked.

Hazekit woke up at the sound of Shimmerlight's and Streamkit's voice. "What's going on?" She asked as she stood up. "I'll play," She answered to Streamkit's question for Brookkit. "What are we gonna play?" she walked over, forgetting everything that had happened the night before.

"She asked me, not you." Brookkit meowed, leaping on top of her sister Hazekit. She grabbed her ear in her jaws and tugged playfully before shooting off behind her mother for protection. But then she noticed that the nursery was more empty than usual. A quick look around confirmed her suspicions.

"Mother! I think one of us is missing. Maybe they've snuck off!"

Shimmerlight smiled down at Brookkit. "Don't worry, Brookkit...It's Mistkit. She's alright, I promise." The she-cat bent down and licked her kit's head. "Don't worry about Mistkit now, Sweetheart."

Streamkit rolled her eyes a little when Brookkit was a little rude to Streamkit. "Brookkit, she can play to, ya know. Not everything is just about you!" Streamkit looked around. "Where is Palekit? We should get her to play too! Maybe we could play tag or hide and seek or somethin."

"Will she come back? I'll miss her." While Brookkit may have not spent much time with her siblings, a bond did exist, and that bond felt stretched. She may have found sharing a nest with five littermates annoying but they were her littermates, and she didn't want any of them to go off anywhere.

"Whatever." Brookkit grumbled from behind her mother. "Anyway, Palekit's probably sleeping. Let's wake her up then to play!"

Shimmerlight looked sadly at Brookkit. "Yes...she will come back." Shimmerlight wasn't sure if that was true or not.

Streamkit nodded. "Yeah, let's!" She padded over to Palekt. "Wake up, Palekit," she purred as she put a paw on her back.
