A Tunnel Birth (Ivyfur's Litter)

Ivyfur opened her eyes, the moonlight slipping into the dark cave Ivyfur slept in, a sharp pain coming from her stomach. The small warriors' belly was heavily swollen with kits, and she could feel that motherly sense kick in, and she knew it was time for them to be born. But as a ripple of pain went through her small body; she let out a wail. "Great StarClan." The tabby muttered, hoping this wasn't how it would stay. Instead of the usual chill she felt; Ivyfur felt as if she had been thrown beside a fire, causing her to start panting. Looking around, she was unhappy to remember that Longtail had returned to camp for the night.

Moonlight guided Eaglethorn's paws as he rushed along the moor, allowing himself the freedom of running across the nighttime grass. However, some noise hit his ears that wasn't a usual sound out here. Stopping in his tracks, he realized that the sound was coming from a tunnel opening. The tunnels were WindClan's way of getting around the territory undetected by prey or other undesirables, but he himself had barely been down there, and only as an apprentice. Taking a few steps forward, he looked inside the dark cavern and called out, "Whoever's down there, speak now."

Perking her ears tO the call, she took a minute to figure out who it was. "I-it's Ivyfur, Eagle.... Eaglethorn. But kits..." She cut off wincing at the next wave of pain. "Kits..." She murmered again, the aging queen tiredly resting her head on the ground. But she yowled again as another even greater wave of pain came, revealing a small kit to be born. Looking towards the little thing, her eyes widened. "Just, can you g-get down here and help?" Ivyfur called, nudging the tiny kit closer and began licking it the wrong way to start it breathing. The little fur it had was a dark grey ginger, and white was also throughout her tiny body. It started mewling after some time, and crawled to her mothers belly to start suckling. But another wave of pain came, a very tiny grey tom as the result. Repeating the process, Ivyfur was thrown into panic as the kit wasn't warm like the other one, but very cold. It was extremely tiny, and no matter how much she tried, the kit wouldn't breathe. Did her small womb kill this kit? Or was a deformity the cause of the small kits' cold body? "Eaglethorn, just get down here!" She called again, her voice squeaking with worry.

Eyes widened, Eaglethorn went down into the tunnels, barely making out the shape of Ivyfur as his eyes adjusted to the darkness. "What do you want me to do?" he mewed uncertainly. Fighting he could do, but doing a medicine cat's job? There was no time to go get Ravenwing, though. What did she want him to do, though?

Her eyes were welling with tears, and she nudged the dead kit away from her chest. "I'm sorry for being impatient for you to get here, I really was... But this kit, will never see the precious Clan your father is raising." Ivyfur whispered, before turning to the small kit beside her. Soon after that, another wave of pain came, another kit in it's turn. Doing what she could to get it closer to her, she looked at Eaglethorn. "I can't do it again, can you help get the kit breathing by licking it's fur the wrong way, like how you'd warm someone up... I'm sorry for making you do this, Longtail's not here... but this is better than being alone." She said, her eyes showing gratefulness for the warrior's company and help.

Feeling very uncomfortable being around a dead newborn, Eaglethorn reluctantly moved towards the not-so-dead newborn kit and started licking its fur the wrong way. This wasn't exactly what he had been hoping to do today, but there was no one else here. He only nodded to show that he had heard.

The rest of the kits were born, through a painful process. They had been all named as well, and soon Ivyfur would take them to camp.
