Rainpaw hunting training

"Come on Rainpaw. Time to hunt." Spottedfeather nudged the sleeping apprentice, slowing backing out of the den. She quietly waited outside.

Opening one eye, the first thought that came to her mind was, 'More training? Yes!' Rising slowly to her paws, so as not to wake her Clanmates, Rainpaw padded out of the den. Blinking against the sunlight, the grey tabby sat and quickly groomed her pelt. "What are we doing today?", she asked between licks. So far, battle training had been her favorite. She liked how it required stealth, power, and intelligence. Three things she had; or, wanted to have.

"We are going to hunt. Now this is probably the best i'm at, so I can definitely help you if you have any trouble. Now follow me." Spottedfeather padded into the middle of their territory, smelling the fresh, crisp air of the morning. "Now what do you smell?"

Lifting her grey nose in the air, she sniffed gently. She recognized something, but just could not put her paw on it.. Oh, yeah! "Is that an..erm.. squirrel?" It was slightly different because it was alive, but it was a squirrel either way.

"Yes. Now show me what you would do to stalk it?"

Rainpaw crouched low to the ground. It looked as if she was using a battle crouch and adjusting it to make herself more stealthy. Pulling herself forward pawstep by pawstep, she approached to oblivious squirrel. "Like that?", she whispered, just out of pouncing distance. Oh, how she could smell delicious freshkill just at the thought of killing prey.

She nodded and stretched her tail and nudged her hind legs as a sign to pounce. She looked to see what would happen.

Nodding to say she understood, she took another two pawsteps forward. She took care as not to disturb the orange and gold leaves that littered the dirt. Pouncing gracefully, she landed with a thump onto her luckless prey. In case she hadn't flattened the thing to death, she nipped behind it's head to make sure. Picking it up in her maw, she trotted over to where her mentor stood. "Like that?" She licked off the dirt that clung to the rodent. Nothing looks appetizing when it's covered in dirt!

"That was great! Great job Rainpaw! You're going to be an amazing hunter, I can feel it" she smiled and let loose a gentle purr. "Want to continue? If so, go bury your prey, and remember where it is!"

Lifting her freshkill, she gazed about for a place to bury her prey from today. Right there looks good. She padded over to a spot in the clearing with no grass at all, and buried her prey. Padding back over, the she-cat meowed,"Can we keep going for just a little more? Just one more try." She sniffed the air. "I can smell a bird around here."

"Go ahead, all you. Just look to me so I can make sure your pose is right. I'll wait right here." she smiled at the apprentice. She learned to quickly, and had natural talent.

Grinning, Rainpaw crouched the same as before. Stalking forward, she padded silently toward the robin, which was pecking at an anthill. She looked back toward Spottedfeather for assurance.

Spottedfeather copied the apprentices stance and looked her in the eyes. She moved to the left a little and lowered her tail more. As the apprentice copied, she nodded, letting her loose.

Ic-Grinning, she crept as close as she could without being noticed and pounced. She landed square on top of the poor bird, and before it could call out, she broke it's neck with a blow of her paw. Jumping off, she took it back to the clearing just before the ants flooded out of their home. Digging up her previous catch, she held them up proudly. "Are we going back now?" she mumbled through fur and feathers.
