Cinderpaw's Battle Training

Nightcloud stood at the entrance of the camp in the brisk, cold night air. The winds gently tugged at her pelt as she waited for Cinderpaw. She hadn't awoken the young apprentice like most mentors did, wanting to let her apprentice take her time. Besides, Nightcloud just loved standing in the cool breeze under the moon and waiting for Cinderpaw gave her time to do that. Today they would be doing battle training, and than hopefully Cinderpaw would do her assessment soon and get her warrior name. She paused as she glanced at the apprentice den. Perhaps she really should go wake up Cinderpaw...

Nope. Something not really all that heavy barreled into Nightcloud, before leaping to her feet and running around to the front of Nightcloud, muttering a quick apology. "What're we doing tonight, Nightcloud?"

Nightcloud was taken by complete surprise when she felt a fluffy form ram into her, causing her to roll to the ground. She blinked as she looked up at Cinderpaw before grinning and getting back to her paws. "It's fine, Cinderpaw. Nothing is wrong with being a bit to excited. Besides, today we are doing battle training so all the energy you have will be helpful."

"Okay!" she replied, grinning wildly.

A small chuckle came from Nightcloud as she turned and padded into the territory. After a while of walking, she paused in a clearing that was almost empty other than for an dead log that stood on one side of it. She quickly made her way next to the log and spun to face Cinderpaw, clearing her throat. "Alright, first thing first. Front Paw Strike. There is an simpler version of the move called Front Paw Blow but seeing how it is the same move that really just depends and if you have your claws out, I see no reason to teach you both of them. Now, as the name implies, you strike your enemy with your paw as hard as you can, with your claws out. Not much to this move." She paused to turn and face the log, quickly slashing at it with her paw and leaving three small lines where her paw had met it. She glanced at her apprentice, nodding once. "See? Easy and simple. Now you try it on the log also."

Nightcloud uses Front Paw Strike costing 10 Stamina and dealing 9 damage to Dead Log.

Cinderpaw nodded, stepping forwards towards the log. Taking in a deep breath and preparing herself, she sent a paw flying through the air towards the log, claws unsheathed, leaving three wobbly lines where her claws met the bark. "Did I do good?" she mewed, a nervous smile on her face.

Nightcloud paused to look at the three markings, and nodded. "A bit wobbly but you get the idea and you will get used to using the move." She turned to Cinderpaw and went on with the next move. "Alright, next is Belly Rank. Belly Rank is a useful move when fighting somebody that is larger than yourself. Using your speed, most cats will duck under their enemy's bellies and rank their claws down the soft part which can easily bring a cat down if you deal enough damage. However, if you are larger  than your enemy, you can knock the smaller cat over and rank your claws down their bellies, and also if you are pinning somebody on their back it is a great move to use. Now, I want you to try it on me but remember no claws out. Would hate to try to explain how I got scratches on my belly to Hailpaw and have to confess that my apprentice got the better of me."

Cinderpaw nodded, before charging at her mentor; diving underneath her while twisting in mid-air, managing to rather painfully drag her soft paws down Nightcloud's belly while she was hurtling through the air, rolling out from underneath her and directly into a tree. "Oops," she muttered, shaking the dirt out of her fur.

A quick look of worry appeared on Nightcloud's face when she saw her apprentice roll into the tree, but when she saw that Cinderpaw looked to be fine a smile replaced her frown. "Very good try, Cinderpaw. Just be careful to watch where you are rolling out. Anyways, I have one more move to show you today. The last is the Leap-and-hold. Once again, the name says it all. You leap onto the back of your enemy and hold on as hard as you can." She turned to the log, and with a quick bound leaped ontop of it, digging her claws into it as she glanced at her apprentice. "Just like that. Simple, easy, but very helpful in battle." Jumping down from the log, she flickered her tail as she glanced at Cinderpaw. "Alright, I want you to try it on me. Just jump into my back and be careful with your claws. And remember, balance is everything. Even if you are just slightly unbalanced, it won't take me much to knock you off."

Cinderpaw nodded, taking a moment to gather herself before leaping onto Nightcloud's back, her claws unsheathed but not gripping hard enough in order to hurt her mentor; focusing entirely on balance over anything. Eventually something or another broke her concentration--a bird flying from a tree or the wind rustling the pine needles loudly--and she fell off, slightly dazed. "Was that good?"

Nightcloud gently poked Cinderpaw, but nodded. "Almost perfect. Just try to keep your attention focused on me and staying balanced and no cat will be able to knock you off without really trying hard." She sat down, smiling at her apprentice. "Come on, we should head back to camp."
