Subject: An Oath, Until the End [OPEN CLANWIDE FINALE] Fri May 10, 2024 2:48 pm

They've made a mess of our territory, ripping apart foxes and our clanmates indiscriminately. Larger patrols have been of no real safety it seems, and with so many Skyclanners dead it feels as if the forest is closing in on the clan. Maddened eyes peering through the darkness, excited barks sending a chill down the spine of the night guards, even as they raise the alarm and call for their clanmates.

There is only one option left, and it's not abandoning the territory. However vicious, these beasts are not the dreaded wolves of the lake. They have gorged themselves on prey... And poisoned prey that has been left on the territory Their agitation has only increased, but their reflexes seem slower than what previous patrols have encountered.

Due to the situation with the battle system, this battle will operate under the following rules:

Combat will be decided by rolling the effect dice. A roll of 1, 2 or 3 is a miss. A roll of 4, 5 or 6 is a successful attack.
Each dog will require 5 successful attacks to be defeated. 3 successful attacks against a cat will result in a KO and being unable to continue in the fight.
Everyone with an active Skyclan cat on the allegiances is eligible to participate. This is a camp battle, after all.

The days had been tense, and the nights seemed more tense still. The threat that seemed to hang over the quickly-darkening camp was enough to make Graywind's fur lift as her gaze swept over the edge of camp. Night guard duties had never seemed so unnerving before, but it was better to be out here keeping watch than tossing and turning in her nest. So many cats had died recently, and Graywind would do anything she could to prevent more death. She had promised to protect her clan, and yet... So many warriors had promised that, and still...

The silvery warrior shifted from paw to paw, glancing toward her partner for the night as the wind stirred the leaves above. The late newleaf night was warm, the waning moon beginning to rise above the tops of the trees.

What a pleasant night it would have been. If the sounds of barking did not split the silence. Graywind was on her paws, adrenaline flooding through her at the sound. Perhaps it was only her increasing paranoia, perhaps it was just her imagination... But the deep, menacing bark seemed a little closer than it had been recently.

Golden eyes peered into the shadows around camp, her ears alert for the snap of twigs and debris, the sound of pawsteps. Silence. For several long moments. Still, Graywind did not allow herself to relax.

The shadows moved.

Fox. Dung. Graywind felt her heart drop. "Dogs!" She let out a screech, praying that her clanmates were not in too deep of a sleep to hear.

With the snap of breaking twigs, the stench of dog was in camp. If Graywind's screech had not woken the rest of the clan, two pairs of excited barks would. Graywind had just enough time to take two pawsteps before they were on her. She wasn't going to go down without defending her clan. She had undertaken that oath when becoming a warrior... She would uphold it. Even at the cost of her life. Claws dug into the short white and brown pelt of one before heavy jaws wrenched her away.

The crunch of bone breaking sounded unnaturally loud to her ears as pain exploded across her back and shoulders. The world around Graywind spun.

She never felt the impact as her body fell to to the ground.

The walls of the medicine den had become more familiar to Thymelight than in comparison to moons prior. She had practically secluded herself to her own den, leaving only to take her share of prey from the fresh-kill pile before promptly returning to the shadows. Every cat mourned differently, and Thymelight desperately wished that she was one of the cats that was able to shake off death and keep moving as if it had never happened. It was as if she was slowly losing everyone and everything that was near and dear to her. Foxtrot’s death had only been a forewarning. Countless others had fallen afterward. Smokepetal had been her mentor and the closest that she would ever have to a mother. Honeydew had been her best friend, and Brackendawn and Myrtlebloom had also proven themselves to be good friends before they had succumbed to the jaws of death. The dogs were still at large, and they had proven to SkyClan that they meant business.

Every night since the bodies had been brought back to camp and the Clan had said their goodbyes, Thymelight had looked down at her growing belly miserably before falling asleep. The kits in her belly would have to be born in an era where such vicious creatures freely roamed across the territory. This was a reality where foxes and wolves invaded a camp that was supposed to keep its inhabitants safe, a reality where famine and sickness were capable of striking at the most inconvenient of times and war ended lives. No cat was safe from death, not even those that the medicine cat loved. She had learned that the hard way.

What had happened to the beautiful world that she had cherished so dearly when she was younger?

Perhaps that beautiful world still existed… but it would take some time for her to find where it had disappeared to. The tabby sighed quietly as she pulled her tail closer to herself from where she laid in her nest. Sleep hadn’t come to her easily that night, but that would soon prove itself to be more of a blessing than a curse.

“Dogs!” A panicked voice announced somewhere outside of the den.

Thymelight had never pulled herself to her paws quicker than in that moment. She poked her head out of the medicine den as the camp immediately exploded into chaos. Two bloodthirsty dogs had forced their way into the heart of SkyClan, and the she-cat felt her heart drop even further into her stomach as her eyes landed upon the lifeless form of Graywind.

No… it was happening again.

Had SkyClan not been attacked enough? Had they not lost enough warriors? She felt tears begin to sting her eyes as she watched the violence unfold. The misfortune would never, ever stop. For now, though, she needed to keep herself alive. The kits that were so close to being born relied on her to stay alive for their sake. Thymelight silently backed up into the corner of the medicine den and focused on how shaky and uneven her breathing was. Even if she was in the proper headspace to pray to StarClan to keep all of her Clanmates alive tonight, it was too late for that.

Dog 2

He barked excitedly as he tore through the defenses of the cat's camp like it wasn't even there. His packmate had just caught and obliterated another cat, and he wanted to get one himself. Maybe it would distract him from his rapidly beating heart, his aching muscles and his nausea. Why was he so out of breath already? His vicious eyes darted around, hoping to scare a cat out of hiding. He wanted to thrash one too! A whiff of the air... There seemed to be a lot in the hole over here...

Dog 2 is moving toward the apprentice den!

Falconmoon's heart was racing when he woke. He bolted out of the warrior's den at the cry of Graywind and the barking of dogs. The sight that awaited him immediately was the torn body of his sister. No... NO!

His eyes settled on the dog that did it, but then the other was moving toward the apprentice den. So much was happening at once. He looked over at the medicine to see Thymelight looking rightfully mortified. Rage exploded throughout Falconmoon's body and his fur fluffed out to look three times his size. His caterwaul erupted through the air, a war cry for all to hear including the dogs.

He charged forward, going for the dog that killed Graywind. He leaped, claws outstretched and jaws wide open, all seeking to mercilessly tear flesh. He did notice that they were drooling excessively and even looked like they had labored breathing.

The dogs at least found the squirrels filled with deathberries that he'd left for them. Maybe the clan would have a chance now...

Falconmoon is attacking Dog 1 (because I don't want to fight myself lol)

He misses this round.

Lighttail could see plain as day that the poison had taken hold of the dogs. Their plan had worked. For a split second she almost felt sorry for the creatures, but quickly shook that thought off. They had killed so many. No more. Lighttail crept through the shadows, her night navigation skills kicking in as she crept up to the male dog. The creature was a massive beast, but it was weakened. Time to go in for the kill. Without warning, the silver she-cat leapt for the dog’s flank.

Her claws dug in and wrenched as she clung to the beast like an oversized squirrel.

Lighttail has successfully hit Dog 2!

turbulence won’t stop us

Lightningbreeze was a light sleeper, something she attributed to the fact that she slept more often in short bursts than through the night. Graywind's shout woke her easily, blinking sleepily awake and rising to her paws.

When the words--single word--registered, echoed by Thymelight, Lightningbreeze's eyes widened. She dashed out of the warriors' den in an instant, not caring (or rathing hoping) if she woke the cats sleeping nearby, but she was already too late. Never mind that she wouldn't have been able to save Graywind even if she'd known, the sight of a fallen Clanmate caused her to freeze in place for just a moment.

Falconmoon and Lighttail were already there, already defending the Clan. There was no time to hesitate before joining them.

She wanted to say something. Words always came easily to her, perhaps too much so. But in this moment, she could only manage one:

"SkyClan!"

Recently, Mistflower found that she slept late and often. Sleeping soundly through the night, and finding sunlit patches to doze off in throughout the day when she wasn't performing her duties as a warrior.

Being woken by something or other wasn't an uncommon occurrence, but the shout of dogs and the way Lightningbreeze nudged her rather roughly on her way out of the den was new. She moved slowly as she rose to her paws, blinking sleepily as she followed suit and shaking her head to try and properly wake up.

She wasn't a fighter, but she had defended her camp before; and now it was threatened again.

Whether or not she felt she was suited for it, she had taken the oath of a warrior.

Mistflower failed to hit Dog #1!

Firepaw woke up with a start as a loud noise echoed through the camp, his nose twitching rapidly at the thick scent of blood in the air. He didn't remember falling asleep the night before, but at some point, while he and Blazepaw had been talking, they must have passed out together. He glanced down at Blazepaw who was curled up beside him and let out a deep sigh of relief upon realizing that his friend was unharmed. Sharp yellow eyes scanned the dimly lit apprentice's den for his littermates and, his muscles relaxed at the sight of them dozing blissfully in their nests.

Then, the baying began. Deep, thunderous barks reverberated through Firepaw's bones, and he shuddered, pelt standing on end as furious caterwauls launched from somewhere in the clearing. He squirmed free of Blazepaw's embrace and peered out of the den, both curious and afraid of what he might see. As he slipped out of the den, movement and a flash of yellowed fangs sent him careening backwards, fur bristling as a terrified hiss built in his throat.

Dog! There were dogs in the camp! Before he could compose himself, though, Lighttail streaked across the clearing and threw herself at the dog in a flurry of claws and teeth. Lightningbreeze followed shortly after and he panted, eyes blown wide. What was he supposed to do!? These were the same dogs that had killed his father! The same once that killed Honeydew and countless other cats! Terror froze his limbs in place, but as his gaze drifted to the side, drawn by the streaks of red by the camp entrance, fury bubbled up in his chest. Graywind...she was...it killed her!

The tortoiseshell tom's claws slid out and he fixed a glare on the dog before him. He didn't know which of them had killed his aunt or even which one had killed the rest of his kin, but they would both pay. With a snarl, he lunged for the massive dog, claws extended, and lashed out for the brute's sensitive neck. His claws sliced easily through the delicate flesh and blood spilled down the dog's chest, staining his and it's fur a satisfying shade of red.

Wolfstar too, was roused by her daughter's screech of alarm. Bolting upright in her nest, the leader was quick to stumble from her den, fur bristling and ears pinning back against her head at the sight of the dogs in camp... And of Graywind's broken body. No no no, she couldn't be...

The leader gave her head a shake. The danger the dogs posed was very, very real... And she would do everything she could to prevent another clanmate winding up on the ground as still as her daughter was. With a grief and fury-filled yowl, she lunged for the dog that was much to close to the apprentice den with unsheathed claws.

Wolfstar has attempted to attack dog 2. Attack unsuccessful.

Stoneheart stumbled from the warrior den alongside some of her clanmates, the grogginess she felt from being pulled from sleep fleeing abruptly as her mind caught up to the sight of camp in front of her. She was quick to follow Mistflower, striking at the filthy beast with unsheathed claws.

Stoneheart is attempting to attack Dog 1. Attack unsuccessful.

The dog growled as a tomcat swiped at her, stumbling back to narrowly avoid being hit. Her mate had pulled the first cat away and shaken it with a viciousness that they would both give to the rest of these little pests. They would make the cats pay for every moment of frustration they had caused. Twisting, she snapped at the gray cat who had missed her, intending to do just what her mate had done. The fluffy cat was too quick, and and the press of the other cats trying to attack her was... A little disorienting. It didn't matter. She would grab one of them eventually.

Dog 1 has gone after Mistflower, attempt ...unsuccessful. Mistpelt please.

Stormwatcher whipped awake his eyes blinking the sleep away - the only thing he saw was Graywind falling to the ground limp - there was a numb cold that zapped through him and once again he felt as powerless as he had felt watching riverclan killing his sister -

his clanmates all rushed at the dogs but he stood frozen with a 100 yard stare of bitter feelings

Seeing his sister (adoptive) wolfstar and his apprentice Stoneheart in danger was about the only thing that got the big warrior moving again as he trudged forward

Our fate all seems to be death - he thought gloomily

He clawed half heartedly at Dog 1 fighting side by side of his apprentice but the energy he once had - the energy he fought riverclan was not there tonight. He would fight to keep his apprentice safe but there was only so much he could lose before he was cast into utter dispair and currently that line had been drawn.

If he had to take a blow from this beast to save Stone he would - its not like his fate was destined to be anything greater.

His paw swung at the dog -

The results mirrored the level of effort he was able to muster for this - his paw sailed by in a miss.

He looked bleakly to his apprentice - he did not have to speak to convey the amount of pain he was in - nothing physical - yet. No this pain was worse

His mouth curled into a frown "Go - run" he muttered

cursed wolf - its your fault I have to care for her
he thought to himself putting himself between Stone and the dog

Storm is fighting along side Stone and targeting dog 1 he missed

BLAZEPAWi can't be who you need me to be

The lean tom blinked sleep from his eyes as the air around him grew cold. A yawn parted his jaws and he raised his head lazily. Where'd Firepaw go? They'd fallen asleep together, somewhere between their grief and their vengeful musings. The lack of warmth beside him must've startled him awake. "Firepaw?" Blazepaw called out softly, wondering if the handsome - er, fiery - tom had left to make dirt, or if something had happened.

Then a screech split the air, sounding throughout the camp. It chilled him to the bone. More shrieking quickly followed, a mixture of terror and rage filling the air. Blazepaw's heart stopped. What was happening? Was Firepaw okay? Were enemy warriors invading? Or...no, it can't be. Before he knew it, he was on his feet and racing out of the den, only to find that it was so much worse than he'd thought. Dogs!

Though he'd never seen a dog before, the two lumbering creatures that gnashed and clawed at his Clanmates were unmistakably canine. A scrap of fur splayed out on the ground caught his attention. Is that a body? The flame-furred apprentice couldn't bring himself to look. It was surely just an injured warrior. It had to be, right? No...he knew better than that. A wail welled up in his throat. He was terrified at the idea that it could be Firepaw. Deep down, he thought it had to be. That so-called 'StarClan' had taken everyone else from him, hadn't they? His heart beat quicker and quicker as he neared, fully expecting to see that familiar tortoiseshell pelt soaked with blood, Firepaw's limbs askew and bent in all the wrong ways...and then a disgusting stench drove him back.

Dog breath. He'd moved just in time. Gnarled teeth snapped at the air just by his head, missing him entirely but sending him staggering to the side in shock. He tumbled into something as he tried to steady himself. A solid, fluffy something. Blazepaw reeled back in terror and unsheathed his claws. Another dog?! He hissed, fluffing his fur out in horror - and then a wave of relief washed over him as he recognized the golden gaze staring back at him. "You're okay," Blazepaw gasped, his voice breaking as he spoke. "I was so worried."

But their reunion didn't last long. Firepaw's paws were already stained with blood, and the vile beast that was terrorizing their camp - his Clan's home - was even angrier after the apprentice's attack. Blazepaw whipped around as he heard a low growl, and he reacted quickly, pushing Firepaw out of the way as it gnashed its teeth at his friend. The thing reared its head back and bayed - calling for help, if he had to guess. It was a booming, fur-raising howl, but Blazepaw wasn't frozen with fear like anyone might've been. No, he felt a new sort of power in his paws as he stared back at the dog. Determination and certainty flooded his veins, and adrenaline kept him moving with purpose. No matter what happened to him, he would make sure his Clan would be safe. And he would do anything to make sure Firepaw was safe.

"Don't touch him!" Blazepaw shouted, moving his body to shield his friend. He leapt at the canine and bowled into it with all of his weight, relishing the feeling of its coarse fur shredding beneath his claws. Thinking quickly, he maneuvered like he'd seen Brackendawn do countless of times before and wrapped his paws around its neck, holding on tight for dear life. Just before he could sink his jaws into the foul beast's neck, it swerved - throwing him off and into the ground. Hard. Blazepaw groaned, dazed.

Blazepaw failed to attack Dog 2.
