Subject: Smudgekit's Apprentice Ceremony Wed 1 May 2024 - 19:37
Rapidfire took a deep breath in looking up at Tallrock. This would be her first apprentice ceremony as the new WindClan deputy. She had seen her father do this countless times. How did he not get this nervous? She slowly climbed up to the top of the rock and stood where he had been so many times before - she closed her eyes feeling the wind ruffle against her wispy pelt. The words he always said echoed in her mind and she tried to remember exactly what he sounded like as well.
'it's not fair dad - you should have gotten to see the first time I got to do this... but maybe you are watching... if you are, know i'm doing my best for you'
she spoke quietly to herself and allowed a couple seconds of nothingness to pass before reopening her eyes. She was ready the nervousness was turning into excitement and eagerness - feelings she was much more used to.
"Let all cats old enough to run the moors gather around the Tallrock for a clan meeting!" she mowed out loudly
In the wind she could have sworn she heard Sootstorm's voice echoing the same words joining her. Just tricks of the wind.
She eagerly awaited Smudgekits arrival. Thinking of - wasn't this the kit that her sister had told not to eat deathberries?? The recent events left her memory fuzzy - but if it was true she should consider the mentor to be someone that could keep an eye on them.
No more trips to the medicine cat den meant that Smudgekit could finally move out of the nursery and begin her training. She'd grown a little too big for her nest, and very tired of the annoying kits and queens worrying over her each and every move. She had attended every Clan meeting since she'd been cleared of her illness, hoping and praying to the very stars above her that it was finally her turn. Today was no different- at the brand new deputy's call, she sent bits and pieces of grass flying behind her as she rushed to the center of the clearing in front of the Tall Branch. 'Please let it be me. Please let it be me. Please let it be me.'
Rapidfire could tell how eager the kitten was for this - a smile bubbled up as she purred so happy to see Smudgekit's energy.
She thought carefully over who would be a good match for smudgekit's mentor.
The smile widened as she got an idea - yes he would be a good mentor she was sure of it.
"Smudgekit - step forward, you have reached the age of apprentice at 6 moons now and are ready. From now on, until you have earned the right for your warrior name you will be known as Smudgepaw. Oatfluff will be your mentor. I know he will pass on his knowledge and prowess to you.
Oatfluff had been a long time friend of hers and she gave a dip of her head to him in acknowledgment.

Oatfluff watched with sad eyes as he gathered beneath the rock, giving Rapidfire a reassuring smile. Though he missed Sootstorm beyond words, he knew his friend would do an amazing job - and here she was, leading her first ceremony. Still, a sadness hung over the gathered cats. It was still the first apprentice ceremony without Sootstorm.
But the Clan was growing. He took a deep breath and tried to focus on that. Smudgekit was a little bundle of excitement - it reminded him of how he was, at her age - and he watched the ceremony fondly. Until Rapidfire announced her mentor. "Your mentor will be Oatfluff."
The brown tom's eyes widened. That was him! He was Oatfluff! Er - last time he'd checked, anyway. The stout warrior straightened up, giving his paw a few licks before smoothing the fur on the top of his head down. He wanted to look presentable, at least. Oatfluff's maw split into a wide grin, and he gave Rapidfire an excited and grateful look as he hurried forward.
Gently, he leaned down - through he didn't have to go too far, given his height. He offered his nose to his apprentice so they could touch noses. Excitement swirled in his gaze as his eyes met Smudgeki- Smudgepaw's. She seems like a little spitfire! By the stars, he was ecstatic - he'd never imagined himself as a mentor. "Are you excited? I am!" Oatfluff's eyes seemed to glow as he whispered loudly to his apprentice. Then, he straightened, returning to his normal speaking voice. "I'll do my best, I promise." He dipped his head, speaking to both Rapidfire and Smudgepaw, his voice full of warmth.

Smudgekit’s little eyes were squeezed tightly shut as she waited for Rapidfire to begin, the gravity of the situation lost on her. It wasn’t that she was selfish- just ignorant to the weight of Rapidfire being the one to conduct this meeting. When her name was the first thing to be uttered, her bright golden eyes flew open and a grin was plastered to her muzzle as she stepped forward. Smudgepaw had a nice ring to it, and she held her shoulders level and her head high as Rapidfire began the chant of her new name.
Oatfluff quickly found her in the gathered crowd of cats. She stretched forward to touch his nose with her own smudged one, shaking out her fur in excitement. She had to be careful, though- she couldn’t let everyone know just how excited she was to finally begin training. She was an apprentice now, after all- she’d better start acting like it. ”Oh, yes. When do we begin?” She mewed in response, smiling as he declared his promise to both herself and the newly named deputy.
