It's Too Quiet [OPEN]

Wolfblossom frowned as she led the patrol along the creek. Aside from the soft bubbling of the water, the territory was quiet. Too quiet. A cool breeze blew, rustling the leaves and her pelt, but the cool air was hardly as welcoming as it might've been. A few hours of quiet stalking through the woods, and their hunting patrol had nothing to show for it aside from a single sparrow. One sparrow was far from enough to feed the clan. They would have to keep going. Wolfblossom glanced at her patrolmates, a sigh escaping her. "Split up, maybe that'll give us a better chance. Just don't go so far that we're out of earshot." Just in case.

Graywind followed the patrol in silence, frowning as she stared up at the trees. It seemed like not all that long ago they had been lively, branches framed by green leaves bustling with birdsong and squirrels racing along the canopy. Now though, the mix of golds and reds were quiet, the wind creating an illusion of life. The silence told a different story, though. At the deputy's suggestion to split up, she nodded, golden eyes turning as she scanned the creekbed, the trees, looking for anything.

Mintglade had come to take part. The scarcity of prey had been a shock, particularly to the feline who had known nothing but bountiful prey for nigh all of her life until this point. Wolfblossom's call had been more or less expected rather soon, and the vibrant foliage of the trees that had began to blanket the forest seemed more foreboding than a beautiful sight. Rippling her tail, she split away from the patrol, going towards the trees. Hopefully she could find something.

Slipping into the branches not-too-far from her patrol, Mintglade's assessment grew even sharper. The flicker of movement from anything would draw her attention. It hurt to know her stomach rumbled, it hurt to know that it felt like not enough food went around these days. That was what drove her to find- there. A squirrel. Her gaze locked directly onto the creature. Gliding from branch to branch, she had just about made it. It was so close!

But at the very last moment, a branch snapped just too loudly, much too close, and the creature skittered away. Frustration wrinkled the silver molly's nose, but her hunt in the branches would not cease.

Wolfblossom silently searched for prey, eventually coming across a bird flitting through the trees. Gritting her teeth, the deputy carefully made her way into the branches, using the tree's trunk as cover. Before she could leap, though, the bird had taken flight. The wind hadn't shifted, it was simply bad luck. There was no use in glaring after it, so the deputy would keep up her search. Mintglade seemed to not have luck either, she noted. It would be a long leaffall, if the patrols went like this for much longer.

Graywind spotted a squirrel as well, and carefully stalked toward it. She had seen both Wolfblossom and Mintglade miss their own catches, and knew that the patrol couldn't go home with one measly bird. If she was careful, maybe she could help. Finally getting close to her prey, Graywind leaped. Her claws met fur, and the warrior was quick to perce the squirrel's throat with her fangs, feeling a rush of relief and triumph that she'd managed to catch it. That meant that one less clanmate might go hungry today.

Sunfire had tagged along on this hunt as well, since the first one of the day had proved unfruitful. It was not the first time this moon that the tom had returned to camp after a hunt, empty handed, and the mounting frustration was plain to see on his face as he trudged along behind his mother. There was no sense hunting in the trees, as he usually did - the birds had been the first thing to go. He supposed finding a better territory was easy, when you had wings.

Wolfblossom called for them to split up, and Sunfire moved off without another word, brow furrowed and paws light. The leaves hadn't started to fall in earnest yet, and it was easy to avoid the crunchy ones on the ground, so they'd better take the opportunity to hunt while it was even marginally easier. The later it got in the season, he imagined, the harder it would be to find food. They were already having to ration prey, and if it got any worse...

He didn't want to think about it getting any worse.

He spotted movement in a patch of dry grass and Sunfire froze, assessing that it was a small mouse, searching for seeds. Stealthily, he moved forward... until he was in leaping distance. When he made his move, he could feel the mouse's body make contact with his claws... right before it disappeared into a hole in the ground that he hadn't seen. Sunfire snarled angrily, whipping around and stiffly making his way back in the general direction of the patrol.

Sunfire has failed to catch a mouse.
