Sorrelpaw’s heart sank as the beast snapped around, holding her breath until she knew and could see Ploverpaw was unharmed. Instead her sister remained latched onto its tail, unrelenting until Bearpaw continued his attack. It almost got me there. She bit her tongue as her brother joked, her stomach filled with fear as he returned to attacking the fox almost immediately. It was like watching a seasoned warrior, the way he circled the beast and launched at it, unrelenting until it fell. An unsettling noise left its throat, much worse than any noise she had heard it produce, twitching until it grew limp at her brother’s paws. Bearpaw had just killed a fox!
“Bearpaw! Slayer of foxes!” Sorrelpaw cheered, offering a smile to him. Though her eyes trailed back to the beast, studying it for a moment longer. It was dead, she told herself. There were no chances it would leap to its paws, not with the blood that coated her siblings, but she couldn’t help but feel uneasy. She stared at the body for a few moments more, making peace that it was dead. It was finally over.
“It’s just a scratch.” Sorrelpaw laughed as she worried, though winced as her sister pressed against her. Adrenaline was pumping through her veins, disguising some of the pain though it burned and it wasn’t able to take it away completely. She didn’t want to worry her sister. Her head pounded from the original excitement and fear, feeling slightly lightheaded. “Only if you’re both ready to go home, too. Is it…Ok if I lean on you? If I need to, I’ll try walking proper first.” She whispered, smiling at her sister.
“What do we do?” She asked softly, glancing to the fox’s body, “do we just…Leave it?”
