practice, practice, practice [solo hunting]

Lightningbreeze raced out of camp with her usual energy and enthusiasm, though her patrols and such were done for the day and her friends were busy for the moment. That was fine: she wasn't a huge fan of spending time alone, usually, but every cat needed time to themselves every once in a while.

She wanted to practice hunting, anyway. Her usual technique-- chasing the prey until she caught up to it-- worked decently well for some things, but she was still not particularly skilled at properly stalking her targets.

So she'd made her way to the Moonlit Creek, where there was no shortage of prey to chase. Stopping to take in her surroundings, she set her sights on a frog at the edge of the water.

Slowly, she fell into a hunting crouch (or at least her best approximation; she was using to running and jumping and circling the trees), and made her approach.

That first attempt was so poor that as she took two steps forward, her target fled.

And yet, while she was still a bit disappointed, she quickly shrugged it off. There were other frogs.

She just needed to rethink her approach.

"Okay, Lightningbreeze," she said, for her own benefit more than anything else. No one else was around, and the prey probably wouldn't have understood her in the first place. Thinking out loud was just easier than thinking quietly. "Use what you have. Look around you. What can you use to your own advantage here?"

She looked around, taking in the scenery; flowing water, the prey that stopped to drink from it, the trees that surrounded them--

"Right!"

Just because she was trying to do things differently didn't mean she wasn't still able to play to her strengths. Lightningbreeze felt more at home in the branches than she did on the ground, most of the time.

She quickly made her way into one of the lower branches, scoping out a target she could drop down on from above.

As she dropped down from the sky, Lightningbreeze realized she had misjudged her jump; landing next to but not quite on top of the frog she had intended to catch. She wasn't quick enough to grab it before its slippery form hopped away, leaving her to choose a third target and question her choice of prey.

Part of her thought that maybe she should just try again later, or maybe just pursue something less slippery, but Lightningbreeze was nothing if not determined and certainly not the sort of cat who was willing to just give up once she'd set her mind to something.

So she climbed the tree again, traversing the branches until she'd reached a different spot where she hadn't already disturbed half the present prey; keeping quiet and watching carefully.

If she carefully judged the distance this time, then this should work.
