Subject: Duckkit's Apprentice Ceremony Sat 15 Jul 2023 - 9:41
Poppyshine
Poppyshine finally felt healthy again, so she could perform her ceremonies again. She thanked Perchstar for taking care of things while she was in the medicine den, and her voice had recovered enough that she could actually make announcements without straining herself.
She leapt onto the Willow Branch and cleared her throat. She called, “Let all cats old enough to catch their own fish gather for a Clan meeting.”
Duckkit poked their head out of the nursery as Poppyshine's voice rang across the camp. They knew they were six moons old - once they had fully gotten a grasp on what being a warrior was, what being an apprentice was...Well, they could hardly wait. Of course, it was hard to know if this was their ceremony or not, they weren't the only kit in the nursery and not the only one that was six moons old but...Well, a kit could hope.
Stumbling from the nursery, Duckkit wormed their way into the crowd and took a seat as close to the front as they could - they wanted a good view even if this turned out not to be their ceremony!
Poppyshine caught sight of the little kit’s pelt when they made their way out from the nursery. She smiled excitedly. If there was one thing in her life that never grew old, it was seeing the excitement on kits’ faces when they realized that it was their ceremony that was being performed.
“Duckkit,” she began, unable to fight her smile, “you have reached the age of six moons. It is now time for you to be apprenticed. From this day forward, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Duckpaw.” The constant stream of apprentices meant that many warriors often didn’t get a moment of respite between apprentices. She knew who would be best for this newest little kit, though; it was a cat she trusted very deeply. “Your mentor shall be Hawkshriek; his moons have been spent as a great warrior, and he will prove to be a wonderful mentor to you, I’m certain.”
Duckpaw! They were Duckpaw now! They could barely contain themself from wiggling in joy as they held their head high, turning to scan the field for Hawkshriek. They...Didn't know the tom - they had only met a pawful of cats so far and the name didn't seem familiar but...Well, if Poppyshine thought he would be a good mentor, then they would just assume it was true! Duckpaw jumped to their paws to scurry over to their mentor to touch noses, a smile on their face. "I can't wait to do training!" they meowed, tail swishing in excitement. "I won't let you down, I promise!"
"There'll be happiness after you, but there was happiness because of you. Both of these things can be true."
Hawkshriek lifted his head as his name was mentioned, deep green eyes glancing over to the newly-named apprentice that practically bounced over to him. He returned their smile, chuckling at the bright look of optimism in their eyes. It reminded him much of his own self during apprenticehood.
"Well, in that case, then I'll make sure you train hard and well." He laughed, nodding. "Training will start tomorrow afternoon. For now, take your time to get used to the apprentices' den and get some rest." The tom purred out softly. Pressing his nose against Duckpaw's, he pulled away with a grin. "Congratulations on becoming an apprentice. I can't wait to guide you through your apprenticehood."

Mistwalker had been in the back of the crowd for this ceremony, hearing her Auntie Poppyshine's call. She liked coming to the ceremonies that Poppyshine conducted, as after all, they were usually quick and swift. Another apprentice gaining their name meant the clan would grow stronger, and being a mentor herself, she felt it important to know who to look out for. As the apprentice was named, Mistwalker found herself looking at the one who would mentor the young tom first. Hawkshriek. With a smile on her maw, Mistwalker cheered.
