Three new sets of tiny paws scrabbled for milk in the ThunderClan nursery. Blazefang and Dayquill’s second litter has finally arrived. Three kits. The same number they’d lost. Even the gender ratio matched, two she-cats and one tom. And oh, how Blazefang’s heart ached and thrilled at the same time! “They’re beautiful, Dayquill,” she purred, a hint of sadness coloring her voice. “There’s two little girls. The first is golden brown with stripes on her face, her legs, and her little tail. She’s fluffy, but not quite so much as I am. I was thinking of Shrewkit for her. The other she-kit is a mottled gray and cream tortie, mostly gray though. I do see a little white on her throat. She’s as skinny as a little twig, definitely my side. She has short fur, though. I’m thinking Copperkit for her. The one tom’s a little more on the chunky side, and he’s all white, and an absolute fluffball. I think you should name your son.”
Maplekit, Salamanderpaw, and Sunfire had fallen. Blazefang was determined not to let anything happen to these three.

The newly-named kit snuggled closer to her mother, comforted by the scent of milk, and the warmth of fur. In the moons to come, much would happen, joyful things, as well as tragedies. But for now, the family was blissfully unaware, save for the missing members. For a heartbeat, the star-lit outline if a tom joined the family, as if hoping to share one last moment with them, and to welcome the kin he would never meet.

The fluffy white tom opened his mouth and let out a high-pitch squeak. His eyes were shut tight and his snowy fur stuck out like a small dandelion. The unnamed kit wriggled closer to his mother, unaware of the grief that clung to the air.

No sound, no sight, and all the golden kit could smell was the heavy scent of milk. It was alluring, and as the kit suckled on her mother not a single sound escaped her. No cries, no purrs. There was nothing in this moment that seemed more important than drinking until she was full, so she did, kneading tiny paws into her mother's belly as if it would fill her own belly quicker.

Three tiny, new lives for ThunderClan.
Dayquill sat protectively close, quiet and still. He nodded when Blazefang spoke, ears turned toward her. He wanted to listen as closely as he could, commit those words to memory. Silently, he prayed he wouldn’t outlive more kits. The least he could do, if he did, was remember them all– that, and to celebrate them while they were here.
Soft, consistent purrs started when Blazefang finished speaking. “They sound beautiful,” he echoed quietly, leaning closer. The kits mewled loudly, stirring moss and down while they wriggled in their new surroundings. Dayquill chuffed fondly at the sounds of them. “I’m proud of you already,” he whispered to the kits, and after a beat, added, “how about Cloudykit? For our son.”

Echopaw sniffed each leaf carefully in the medicine den until he found the borage he needed, the fluffy white tom entered the nursery and dipped his head in greeting to the two parents. The grief deep in Blazefang's eyes mimicked his own. He couldn't hide his minute wince remembering the cats being brought in after the dog attack. The medicine cat tried with all his might to save them but he...he just couldn't.
He hoped Blazefang and Dayquill didn't blame him - but he understood if they did. Nevertheless, he had a job to do. "Borage, borage, borage." he meowed, dropping them where Blazefang could reach, "Let me know if you need a poppy seed or two." Echopaw added managing a small smile before looking over the three kits with his eyes, they seemed to be nursing just fine and had all their limbs in tact. The medicine cat apprentice felt a twang of something he could place in the pit of his stomach as he looked at the beautiful family. With one last dip of his head, the tom exited the nursery and headed back to see Fawnshine, perhaps she needed assistance with something. Anything.
Much later after the medicine cat apprentice had gone to bed, he lay awake when suddenly he placed the feeling from earlier in the day. Jealousy. He felt jealous. Of what exactly he wasn't sure but he didn't have the mental energy to think it through. Perhaps another time. One thing he knew for certain was that he would have to ask Pricklebush how he got over it. Yes.
