Fresh-kill (open hunting)

Skittering paws ran from an enormous figure, hot on the tiny being's tail. It had been alerted to the monster's presence mere seconds before it had tried to leap, but the failed launch hadn't been enough to discourage the beast. It still came, steadily gaining on the small life form even as it tried to shake its pursuer with erratic twists and turns through the marshland. Further and further, then suddenly the sounds behind the creature stopped, even as its own running hadn't. A crushing weight fell upon the small creature's form, halting it's sprint in an instant and threatening to squeeze more than just life out of its body. Briefly, it felt the sting of something sharp entering its body, then nothing.

Sablestrike lifted his head, a mouse dangling from his closed mouth as he began the walk back to his patrol. A slight blunder had cost him his easy kill, something that clearly upset the tom. There was a scowl on Sablestrike's face as he dropped his prey on a relatively dry patch of land. With any luck this would be the start of a large pile of fresh-kill, though with his mood soured the tom was sure he was bound to make even more mistakes this night.

Badgermask's eyes were narrowed in focus as she padded after Sablestrike - or well, padding in the direction he had rushed off in after a mouse. She raised an eyebrow as he came padding back, looking defeated so she was a tad surprise to see that he had caught his mouse - thought she was sure he would have rather not spent the energy chasing it down. She opened her mouth to say something, but then reconsidered. Part of her wanted to make a remark but that wouldn't help his mood, and she doubt praising him, not that it was really her 'thing', would help that much either. So, she closed her mouth and simply gave him a nod as she came to a stop and tasted the air around her - catching wind of a toad.

She padded forward, gaze searching for it until she spotted it nearly blending in with some roots among the mud. She dropped into a crouch, stalking forward as she tried to judge the best way to approach. A leap might do it as she fell into position, bundling her paws beneath her as she prepared to jump. However, at that moment the toad chose to make a leap, not moving far enough away but she knew she had a little time to react as she launched herself forward. Only partway through her jump did she realize her error - the toad had leapt further underneath the roots. Her paws slammed into the roots, causing the toad to croak in surprise as it disappear into shadows and mud before she could recover and make a swipe at it.

An annoyed hiss escaped her as she pushed off of the roots, giving it a strong glare before she turned with a huff. Fine then, she could find something else to catch.

Badgermask attempted to catch a toad and failed, costing 2 stamina.

'Hunting Dice' : 7

Tawnyshadow followed behind the patrol as they each attempted to catch something. So far, despite their experience and effort, only one mouse had managed to get to the fresh-kill pile. The warrior flicked her tail in disappointment. It was only Newleaf, surely there should be more prey around? She tasted the air, picking up the scent of prey.

The she-cat's eyes narrowed as she silently followed the trail, her paws not even disturbing the new green shoots on the ground. Her body slid soundlessly through the shadows, as she got closer and closer to her target...a rabbit. The creature was unaware of her, only realizing its fate when she had pounced, and by then it was too late. Her claws dug into the rabbit's fur and she killed it with a swift bite to the neck.

Tawnyshadow carried the rabbit back to the patrol. It seems that there wasn't a lack of prey afterall.

Slipping through the undergrowth, Sunflare stalked his prey. Tonight’s patrol was just about perfect, with his mentor, the she-cat he liked, and… Badgermask. Okay, two out of three. Sunflare had nothing against his distant cousin, they just weren’t close.

The scent of a rabbit had enticed him, the leggy tom padding silently after it. Sadly, he lacked the skill necessary to hunt such prey. He had the speed for it, just not an understanding of the complex twists and turns a rabbit ran in. Panting, the slender cat returned to the patrol, looking even more sheepish upon seeing Tawnyshadow’s catch.

Sunflare too tried to catch a rabbit if his own, but the tom was not as lucky as her. Tawnyshadow was quick to comfort the tom, touching his cheek with her nose briefly and purring. Scenting the air again, the she-cat found a trail of a frog. Her favourite! Tawnyshadow's eyes lit up as she slid into the shadows again, intent on the trail. She crouched, ready to pounce. a slight rustle to her right alerted her prey, and before she could react the frog was gone.

Tawnyshadow hissed in fustration and rose from her crouching position. How did she manage to mess that up? It was just a frog! With a somewhat sour look on her face, she turned back to the patrol. At least she still has a rabbit.

'Hunting Dice' : 8

His hunch was correct it seemed, as two of the other members of his patrol failed to catch their targets. The only other cat to catch something was Tawnyshadow. If he was in a better mood he might have complimented her on it, but as it stood he had no inclination to do so. Catching prey was expected of a warrior, she wasn't an apprentice anymore just as Sunflare wasn't. Sablestrike shot the tom a look as Tawnyshadow consoled him before stalking off in search of his next catch.

The others had missed out on their prey, which meant he was sure to follow. Still, the tom prowled toward his next target, a lone crow. His steps were quiet as could be, though as he drew closer to the avian something had attracted its attention. Wings spread as the bird began to take flight, the Shadowclan warrior trying desperately to follow suit. With no wings of his own the tom fell back to the earth, forced to watch as his prey flew off into the night. A growl rumbled in Sablestrike's throat as he watched it go.
